Dimitar Berbatov will leave Old Trafford in the New Year unless he is given a favourable new contract, according to the Daily Star. The Bulgarian is reportedly unsettled at Old Trafford and, despite his impressive goal tally last season, has slipped down the United pecking order of strikers.

A host of European clubs have been linked with Berbatov’s services as he continues to struggle for first-team opportunities at United.

The 30-year-old shared the Premier League golden boot last season with Carlos Tevez, scoring on twenty occasions.

However, he has fallen down the pecking order this season following the emergence of young striker Danny Welbeck and the continued progression of Mexican goalscoring sensation Javier Hernandez.

The Daily Star reports that Berbatov will leave the club in the New Year if he is not handed a new contract.

United have the option to extend his present deal by another year – but Berbatov’s agent is reportedly pushing for a new, lucrative deal for his client.

Formerly of Spurs, Berbatov is into the final 12 months of his current deal and Sir Alex Ferguson may look for a quick sale in January with Inter Milan and Bayern Munich reportedly interested.
