An eighth-wicket stand of 75 ensured Glamorgan still have three wickets remaining, going into the final day of the match against Derbyshire.

Derbyshire declared on 462 for six, when they had a 504-run lead. Dominic Hewson was unbeaten on 102. They were still 223 runs ahead of the Welsh outfit at close of play, as Glamorgan finished on 281 for 7. Mark Wallace is 84 not out.

Hewson played the anchor role, waiting for the bad ball before adding to his overnight score of 35. He played a late cut off Robert Croft to bring up his century and a declaration from Dominic Cork.

Glamorgan needed to make a solid start if they had any chance of saving the game, but they suffered a pre-lunch blow in the sixth over when Hemp edged a Kevin Dean delivery into the safe hands of Cork.

Derbyshire struck again soon after lunch when Cork defeated Adrian Dale for pace and Glamorgan were struggling on 39 for two.

Opener Steve James gained confidence as the match progressed and added to the score with a boundary through extra cover. Michael Powell had a good understanding with James and weighed with successive boundaries off Dean in the 18th over. The partnership was worth 63 when Lian Wharton trapped Powell lbw with a good-length ball.

Matthew Maynard replaced Powell at the crease - but he only managed six runs before edging the ball onto his stumps. The Welsh side suffered a massive blow in the very next over when Robert Croft edged Wharton and Cork claimed his second catch of the innings.

Glamorgan's hopes rested firmly with James, who continued to keep the scoreboard ticking over at the other end. James smashed a hat-trick of boundaries but his brave stand came to end on 78 when he was adjudged lbw while attempting to sweep Wharton.

Thomas offered brief resistance before Luke Sutton took a sharp catch to leave the hosts reeling at 206 for seven. However, Mark Wallace (84 not out) and Michael Kasprowicz (32 not out) added an unbroken 75 for the eighth wicket to take the match into a fourth day.
