They recovered from 14 for four and then 25 for seven and fared even better in the second innings - moving to 100 without loss, but still 307 runs behind.

Cork leaves Northants floundering

Cork took the first four of Northamptonshire's first-innings wickets to leave them floundering on 14 for four. Mal Loye (nought) was first to go, inexplicably leaving the third ball of the innings from Cork alone only to be clean bowled and he claimed his second wicket from the last ball of his first over, Russell Warren playing defensively to a short one and edging to Andy Gait at second slip.

One for two became three for three in the fifth over when David Sales followed Loye's example, without reason leaving a good length delivery from Cork alone and seeing his wickets toppled. All three batsmen had failed to add a run.

Skipper Hussey (13) attempted to fight fire with fire, striking two boundaries before becoming Cork's fourth victim in only four overs, this time bowled lbw after playing across the line.

Dean gets in on the act

Not to be outdone, local boy Kevin Dean then got in on the act, snapping up three more wickets in double quick time as Northamptonshire slumped to 25 for seven. Tony Penberthy edged to an inspired Cork at third slip for the addition of one more run, and then two wickets fell in two balls in the 12th over, Toby Bailey and Ricky Anderson, both lbw. All three of Dean's victims were also unable to trouble the scorers. But an eighth-wicket partnership between Graeme Swann (44) and Carl Greenidge (46) saved the visitors from further embarrassment.

But Graeme Welch had Swann caught by Chris Bassano at second slip and then saw John Blain (0) edge another to wicketkeeper Luke Sutton before Jason Kerr claimed the last wicket of Greenidge, who was cleaned bowled by a yorker.

Northants nightmare over?

By the close Hussey's side went some way to getting their first innings nightmare out of their system by reaching 100 without loss, Hussey himself unbeaten on 56 and Mal Loye on 40.

Earlier in the morning, Sutton was bowled lbw by Darren Cousins for 24, Welch hit five boundaries for his 26 before being caught by Sales off Greenidge and Anderson clean bowled Mohammed Ali for 11.
