Derbyshire Premier cruise through to second round

The Derbyshire Premier League are through to round two of the League President's Trophy following an easy victory in Northumberland. The visitors won the game in heavy rain by ten wickets.

The Northumberland League batted first and made a slow start, losing three wickets quite cheaply. Then there was a promising stand between Steven Thain and Souvik Banerjee which put on 69 runs. Both were bowled by Derbyshire’s young spinner Sam Patel. Skipper Steve Hutchinson looked in form but was smartly run out by Jamie Benstead for 16. The bowling by Derbyshire was always tight and Simon Moore, Duncan Player, Ian Darlington and Ian Parkin got one wicket apiece.

During the tea interval it started to rain, but Northumberland very sportingly agreed to continue with play. The rain, which was gentle at first became heavier, but they still stayed out. The Derbyshire openers, James Benstead and David Smit were in prime form, but the bowlers suffered from having to bowl with a wet ball. In the next round of the LCC President’s trophy the Derbyshire Premier League play the Notts Premier League at Alvaston & Boulton CC on Sunday July 21st. This will be a repeat of last Year’s Final.
