Carvell Coventry Bears began their preparations for the new season with a 32-20 away win against an experienced Oxford University side. Missing international trio Alan Robinson, Rhiddian Booth and Tom Shaw, and with Scott Clendenning-Fenton taking part in a Scotland A trial, the Bears gave debuts to Tim Farnden, Stuart Arnett-Clark, Luke Jarvis and Will Hunting who all impressed.
Coventry led 16-10 at half-time, going behind to a try after nine minutes but coming back with tries from Tom Watts, Tim Farnden and Alex Brown, two converted by Chris Brown, before the students claimed a converted score.
Skipper Alex Brown went in for his second try to open the second-half scoring, and Tony Wildsmith and Arnett-Clark added two more - all three converted by Chris Brown - before Oxford took advantage of reshuffle in the opposition camp to score two late tries.
