County slip to narrow defeat

Warwickshire's hopes of making the knockout stages of the National Under-20 Championship were shattered by a 24-20 defeat at Oxford University. A late try and penalty sentenced the County to their third successive group reverse after they had come from 13-5 down at half-time at Iffley Road to lead 20-13.

Leamington scrum-half Patrick Northover and Barkers Butts prop Pete Stapleton and centre Tim Waters scored tries for Warwickshire, one converted by Nathan Tilsley who also kicked a penalty.

But the students finished strongly, and a drop goal was followed by a try from prop Will Kane - awarded despite Warwickshire claims that the player had been held up - to regain the lead before a closing penalty.

Oxford University are now at home to Notts, Lincs & Derbyshire at Iffley Road on Sunday to determine who will join group winners North Midlands in the Midlands semi-finals.
