LIONS coach Mark Ellis was more outspokenly critical of his team's performance than usual after this fourth successive defeat which sent them into the bottom half of the National Division Three North table. "Having played well in the first half against the wind, I thought we were shambolic in the second half and played without heart and without passion," said Ellis.

"I did think some officials' decisions cost us dearly, but the way we crumbled in the second half was, I thought, unacceptable."

Lions had limited Caldy to two penalties by former Ireland international Simon Mason despite the visitors enjoying an overwhelming possession and territorial advantage.

Rugby had themselves offered little in attack and in fact conceded the second penalty when Caldy were reduced to 14 men with flanker Matt Lamming sinbinned for a swinging arm.

Lions' second half began disastrously when they threw possession away and a fumbled attempt to collect a Caldy kick and then a missed tackle allowed Craig Ross to score a converted try for 13-0.

Chris Murphy's 54th-minute try, converted by James Hawken, brought Lions back into the game, but they were harshly denied another try when Tristan Prosser-Shaw's touchdown was considered uncompleted by a touch judge.

Lions looked capable of another score, but a Caldy drive was only stopped illegally and Marcus Coast scored with advantage being played.

I am a little surprised to see a report from a Caldy game on your website - though obviously it is through The Lions. I believe Craig Ross is from your way. We also have Richard Broer, who I think may have played at Coventry (colts?) as well as Nuneaton.

Craig and Richard first plied their trade on the fields of The Woodlands, Barkers' Butts and Earlsdon, so are local boys most defintely. Rossy is a good player, I don't know how he's done at Caldy (was playing at Orrel I think) but is talented.

Craig has certainly been at Caldy a couple of seasons. This year (and the club statistics are wrong in that they say 6 tries, 40 points) he has scored at a rate of a try every other game, or slightly better. I think he is taking time out at the end of the season - possibly doing a world trip, but I can't quite remember what I was told. Richard has only played a few first team games, but I think he will get more opportunity next year.
