The prodigal son returns to captain the side
in 2007.
There trully is only one Darren Gough. He is
charismatic, colourful and cricket mad. A player that has always worm his big
heart on his sleeve, he has proved beyond anyone that doubted that his heart
belongs to his native Yorkshire by returning to captain the side in
2007.
Darren first strode into the Yorkshire side in 1989, his chest
puffed out and his bowling fast he quickly became a Yorkshire favourite. Lacking
the heaight of a traditional paceman Darren used accuracy, reverse swing and a
Yorker that made him potent at Test and One Day International level and an ideal
man to bowl at the death in one day cricket.
His ambition to play in the
2007 World Cup failed to materialise signalling the end of an illustrious
career. In 59 Tests, 159 One Day Internationals and 2 Twenty20 matches
Darren represented England with an obvious pride that fans warmed to. He has
taking 467 intrnational wickets in an England shirt.
When Gough left
Yorkshire in 2001 it was his England career that appeared to have got in the
way. Some Yorkshire fans christened him Darren Gough OBE (Only Bowls for
England) and saw his move to Essex as confirmation that he had little interest
in Yorkshire cricket.
Darren enjoyed three successful seasons in Essex
before being announced as Yorkshire captain in March 2007. The combination of
Gough's exuberance and dressing room charm, mixed with the more thoughtful
approach of Martyn Moxon
as Director of Professional cricket is seen by the majority of Yorkshire fans as a dream
ticket.
