Essex Sign Seamers

Essex have bolstered their seam bowling department by signing Irishman Adrian McCoubrey & former Berkshire player Nick Denning for 2003. Both player's have signed one-year deals for the 2003 season, as Essex begin their campaign in Division 1 of both League's.

Adrian McCoubrey is 22 years old and is a fast medium bowler and made his Irish debut in 1999.

Nick Denning is one year older at 23 and is also a fast medium bowler. He has played Minor Counties for Berkshire since 1999 and impressed whilst playing for the Essex 2nd XI vs Surrey at Colchester a couple of weeks ago.

McCoubrey on his signing commented: "I am thrilled that Essex have given me this opportunity to impress and I hope that this is the start of a long career as a professional cricketer".

Whilst Chief Exec David East said: "We are delighted that Adrian is joining us. We are sure that he will make a great contribution to the Club next year" and on Denning said: "Nick clearly has great ambition and will undoubtedly strengthen the squad's bowling for next year. We wish him well for the future".

Obviously the seam bowling is a problem for Essex and if we are to this time retain our place and maintain a challenge for honours in Division 1 of both League's, the bowling has to be strengthened, especially if Ashley Cowan is to be out of next season, something we'll know once he has had his knee surgery.

So these two new youngsters have a tough task ahead of them and I'm sure they'll be up for it. 'Scimitars' would like to welcome them to Essex and hope their stay is enjoyable and successful.
