The Great Shirt Auction

By Walk4Matt Northampton
April 6 2010

The Northampton section of the Walk4Matt team are pleased to announce a FANTASTIC auction

Saturday 10 October 2009 Northampton Saints 31 Munster 27.

Were you there?

Does seeing that still send a tingle down your spine?

Would you like an extra special memento of that day?

Well you can, because...

The Saints have generously donated the 23 shirts worn for the Munster Heineken Cup home game to be auctioned to raise funds for theWalk4Matt Fund. Since the game was played the shirts have had the names of the individual players added to make them even more memorable. Each shirt (where possible) will be signed by the player too.

The auction will be open to all and links to the COYSDC website will be put on the official site as well as being mentioned in the first available match day programme and hopefully in the press and local radio.

All shirts will start with reserve price of £50.

Bids should be emailed to me at thetacklebag@aol.com and should be in ‘round pounds' no pence please.

Your highest bid will be entered against the shirt (i.e if the bid for the shirt stands at £50 and you bid £100,  that is what goes against the shirt, not £51)

These bids will be updated regularly for all to see, no names will be displayed only initials of the current highest bidder.

If 2 or more bids for a particular shirt are identical, then the earliest one placed holds precedence.

At the end of the auction winning bidders will be notified by the organiser (Clive Fleckner aka ‘Jazzman').

Payment has to be made through the ‘Just Giving' link on the website NO EXCEPTIONS

http://www.justgiving.com/ClareGarner-Walk4Matt

No shirt will be handed over unless payment has been made. NO EXCEPTIONS

Those winning bidders who wish to have their shirt posted to them will be expected to reimburse for postage and packing costs (probably in the region at an additional £5)

In addition to the shirts they will also have a signed photo from the match (this has kindy been donated by Claire J)  The photo in question is an action shot of Shane G and includes Ben Foden, Besty and Dylan.  This signed photo will also be auctioned.

If you have a problem agreeing with any of the above, please do not bid.

The auction closes at 5pm on Sunday 18 April with, following payment, shirts being available for posting during that week or for collection with suitable identification at the Saracens game on the 24 April.

The shirts are those worn by:-

The shirts are those worn by:-

Please see post below for all latest bids and change in format
No bids will be accepted on this thread, only via email as above.

It is up to you to check whether you have been outbid. I will update all bids as soon as I can after receiving them.

After the end of the auction, would winning bidders please wait until they have heard from me before paying.

Many thanks.

I have found out that the Saint's Shop charge £3.50 for posting out a shirt and I have been promised a quantity of postage bags from them for this purpose. So that will need to be added to any winning bid and paid direct to me.
But please as stated above, wait until you hear from me after the auction has ended.

With 10 days or so to go to the end of the auction there has been a flurry of bids and enquiries including a couple of corporate ones and international too. (and not from the usual suspects on Brazil/ Maine or NZ...yet)

The total bid so far is in excess of £2300, for which I thank you on behalf of the rest of the team. I know some are waiting 'til the last day, even in some cases the last few minutes to place a bid. However I would still urge you to get your bids in early, taking into account you might possibly be delayed (still drunk in Limerick after great win, getting lost on the way home, etc, etc.)

I did state in the original post that shirts would be signed 'where possible' and I think it is safe to say that all shirts will be signed (Mark Hopley is organising this) with the possible exception of Santiago Bonorino's. I did offer to fly out to Argentina (at the Saint's expense) to get it signed but to date have not heard anything.cool smiley

We have reached the £3000 goal, brilliant, many thanks to all bidders.

Can we reach £4000?

I think there may be a fair few out there keeping their powder dry till Sunday afternoon Clive. Will you be updating it during the day?

Jazzman
14/04/2010 13:56
Chris (et al)

I am updating bids as soon as I see them, but I take your point. Come Sunday I expect a flurry, nay a deluge and I expect to be updating constantly.

I would hope that people would be prepared to bid what their maximum is, not to see how cheap they can get something for,as it is such a worthy cause.

Come the end of the auction and your bid it timed at 4:59:59pm or earlier and is the highest bid on an item you will win it. Although the final list may not be up before 5:30pm.Hopefully I cannot be fairer than that.

I would add though, that will be no updates between about 3pm and about 7pm on Saturday. Not that I shall be FG though but at a wedding (bad planning by the groom methinks.) Mind you, hopefully all prospective bidders will be at FG!

Just had an update on the shirts from Mark Hopley.

He has them all and is getting them signed front and back, so they will be suitable for framing.

I am collecting them on Monday (hopefully)

ChrisG

Yep appreciate that Clive. As with any auction as the price rises on something you have your heart set on more often than not people find an extra few quid to go over their maximum once they are outbid and you might find the flipside is that the charity gets more money.

Jazzman
15/04/2010 09:01
I have been asked a couple of times why I decided to do the auction this way and updating very regularly, rather than putting it on Ebay where updates are automatic. London Irish recently auctioned off the shirts worn on the St.Patrick's Day game (v Sale I think). These were on Ebay and did indeed raise a lot for Walk4Matt and possibly others.
I took the decision that although on Ebay the auction would reach a wider audience and possibly raise more money... I felt that the true supporter could be outbid by memorabilia type stores who would sell on the shirt(s) for a greater profit. Also the ability to own a bit of Saint's history could be denied to the average supporter.
We shall see, come Sunday with the final total, whether my decision was the right or wrong one.

St ann
15/04/2010 09:27
Absolutely the right one, Jazzman. Saints fans (and some Tigs) have already proved their generosity with money in the bucket shake they now have the chance of seeing a return for their money, not seeing "our" shirts going for astronomical prices to collectors rather than fans. It is a fine line to walk between raising as much as possible for charity and still being inclusive for the average chap and chapess!

ChrisG
15/04/2010 13:39
Wasn't questioning the way you've done it all Clive, well done on that, just stating the fact that peoples 'maximums' usually rise when they've lost. I'll be bidding a 'max' on Sunday but should I be outbid later in the day then i'm sure i'll find a few more quid somewhere to increase that offer, My purse loses the kids don't eat but charity wins all round, thats why I initially asked about updates on Sunday. i'd hate to bid my max then lose by a single quid or so when off line.

Jazzman

It has been suggested that with the auction ending at 5.00pm on all the shirts some bidders could miss out on buying any of the shirts, if they had been outbid on their first choice. I can understand this and so have changed the auction format to allow everyone multiple chances in getting a shirt, and also (hopefully) raising more money for the Walk4Matt coffers.

The format now is:-

I will accept any bid on any shirt/photo and update it on the website up to 16.45 (4.45pm) on Sunday 18 April.

The following list shows the times an auction on an individual player’s shirt will end.

These are the current bids

17.00 15 Ben Foden £270 S.R..
17.05 14 Chris Ashton £501 C.G.
17.10 13 Jon Clarke £150 P.B.
17.15 12 James Downey £215 R.M.B.
17.20 11 Bruce Reihana £210 S.S..
17.25 10 Shane Geraghty £250 C.H.
17.30 9 Lee Dickson £150 C.D.T.
17.35 1 Soane Tonga'huia £275 K.C.
17.40 2 Dylan Hartley £175 R.J.H.
17.45 3 Santiago Bonorino £70 L.G.
17.50 4 Courtney Lawes £145 B.A.
17.55 5 Juandre Kruger £200 B.R.
18.00 6 Phil Dowson £150 M.H.
18.05 7 Neil Best £225 K.C.
18.10 8 Roger Wilson £140 A.J.W.J.
18.15 16 Brett Sharmam £150 T.S.
18.20 17 Regardt Dreyer £80 P.S.R
18.25 18 Brian Mujati £100 C.K.
18.30 19 Ignacio Fernandez Lobbe £220 K.C.
18.35 20 Mark Easter £75 P.S.R.
18.40 21 Alan Dickens £55 A.M.
18.45 22 Stephen Myler £150 H.E.
18.50 23 Chris Mayor £80 L.G.
18.55 Signed Photo £100 D.L.

In the 5 minutes preceding the end of that player’s shirt auction I will accept bids only on that item.

The bids will be updated regularly on the website by myself and my helpers.

I will reiterate that it is up to you to see whether you have been outbid. If you bid on a shirt and your email is timed as received on my computer before the end of that particular auction (and of course you are the highest) you will win it.

Please bid with your maximum bid. Please think ‘What can I afford to pay’ not ‘How cheap can I get it for’.

Please bid within your means DO NOT BID WHAT YOU CANNOT AFFORD

I would appreciate if in the subject line of your email bid you state the name and number of the shirt, your maximum bid and your initials

For example:-

15 Ben Foden £250 ABC

This will allow me to post up quickly who is the current highest bidder, without opening the email.

If you are fortunate to win one of the auctions, please do not pay until you receive an email from me after the auction.

All other rules still apply. If you have problems accepting any of the above please DO NOT bid

In the light of some of the bids coming in, and I believe some possible (hopefully) big bids tomorrow, if you are considering (providing you win of course) having your shirt posted to you. The insurance included by Royal Mail within the £3.50 charge is I think fairly minimal. Please consider paying extra for special delivery and increased insurance cover. This can be agreed and calculated once I have the shirts packaged and weighed on Monday/Tuesday.I can only guess but I would think that an extra charge of £3 (bringing P&P to about £6.50 would be sufficient.

The shirt auction is just fantastic. I just wanted to post this short clip featuring Hambo that shows the kind of difference your generous support of the auction and walk will have. SpecialEffect is one of the 3 causes benefiting from the walk and the clip shows a young girl from near Cosgrove that is helped by the charity being able to play a computer game for the first time with an eye control computer under the project inspired by Hambo.

Thanks again!
