On a rain-shortened third day, the prolific James (184) and Dale (109) extended their fourth-wicket partnership to 217 - the highest at Colwyn Bay - before spinner Nicky Boje made belated inroads by dismissing both batsmen in quick succession. But, despite a six-wicket haul from the South African, Glamorgan reached 495 all out - a first innings lead of 31, and the game seems to be heading for a draw.

The whole of the pre-lunch session was wiped out by persistent drizzle and a total of 45 overs were lost before play got underway at 2.30pm with in-form Notts chasing their sixth championship win in seven outings. However, on a true batting wicket, Glamorgan advanced their overnight 248 for three to 371 before Boje managed a breakthrough for the visitors.

Dale was bowled for 109 playing across the line to a well-flighted delivery and nine runs later a tired-looking James's marathon six-and-a-half-hour innings ended.

After facing 306 deliveries, James advanced down the track to Boje, missed and was neatly stumped by wicketkeeper Chris Read having struck 26 fours in his 184.

Once Glamorgan had achieved maximum batting points, the scalps of Robert Croft (9) and Mark Wallace (21) completed a five-wicket haul for Boje, the former edging a good-length ball to Read and the latter trapped leg before offering no shot.

An innings of 33 by Darren Thomas helped Glamorgan to within three runs of Notts' total before he hooked Richard Logan to Stephen Randall at deep midwicket. Mike Kasprowicz made sure Glamorgan finished with a first-innings lead before Notts grabbed their third bowling point when Dean Cosker clipped Logan to Guy Welton, who held a good catch at short midwicket.

Simon Jones (12) blasted successive sixes off Boje before the spinner gained his revenge by bowling the rookie England paceman with the last ball of the day to finish with six for 128 from 42 overs. Kasprowicz finished unbeaten on 35 after a cameo 42-ball innings which included four fours and two sixes.
