After slipping to 116 all out in their first innings, an impressive fightback after following on on Thursday gave the home side belief as they started the day on 184 for two. However, they mustered just 144 more runs before Jason Gallian's men knocked off the 83 required for victory.

Gallian will take great heart out of this victory as sixth-placed Nottinghamshire combined a patient batting display with some lethal seam bowling as they marched to an easy victory.

However, at the start of the day, Paul Collingwood carried the fight to the visitors, signalling his intentions in the opening over with a late cut and cover drive off Paul Franks. But Brad Hodge was finding life difficult and added just two to his overnight 42 before falling to Greg Smith courtesy of an edge to Nicky Boje at second slip.

Marc Symington was back in the pavilion for just seven after Andy Harris trapped him lbw and Andrew Pratt soon followed. Pratt, who had been dropped by Kevin Pietersen two balls earlier, made just eight before Smith induced an edge to Pietersen, who took a fabulous catch at third slip. And when Collingwood went four deliveries later for 34, the writing was on the wall for Durham. A short ball from Harris did the damage, Pietersen pulling off another superb catch in the slips.

Worse was to follow when Nicky Phillips was bowled by Harris without scoring two balls later. Danny Law and Mark Davies provided some resistance and forged a gritty 53-run partnership. A lovely drive to the covers off Boje was the pick of Law's strokes before he edged the South African to Gallian at first slip for 36.

The tail continued to gently wag as Davies clung on and Neil Killeen carved out 18 before Logan forced him into edging one to wicketkeeper Chris Read. But just nine deliveries later another hapless day with the bat was over as Logan took his third wicket of the innings.

Davies (25) could find no response to a short delivery which found its way to Paul Johnson at cover and left Nottinghamshire chasing 83 to win the game. Skipper Gallian went for just 11 and new batsman Paul Johnson followed 10 minutes later for the same score, but it was merely a blip as the visitors waltzed to victory.

Guy Welton (42 not out) and Usman Afzaal (12 not out) chalked up the necessary runs to earn Nottinghamshire 19 valuable points.
