The tourists go into the second day on 236 for two, with Rahul Dravid unbeaten on 110.

England's attack will attempt to make amends for a below-par performance on day one.

"It wasn't one of our better days," said Fletcher.

"We've bowled better on numerous occasions and if the bowlers look at themselves they will probably realise they haven't learned from Trent Bridge, where the conditions were pretty similar.

"They got their lines and lengths wrong and they cannot afford to allow the batsmen to leave as many balls. We've played some good cricket here previously, but we had an off day and I hope we can get it back.

"What was difficult was the bounce, it was excessive and perhaps that confused the bowlers a little bit, but cricket is a strange game and you can play and miss on certain days and other days you get the nick."

Fletcher was particularly impressed with Dravid's resolve during a 170-run second wicket partnership with Sanjay Bangar, during which he received several blows to the body with deliveries which rose sharply off a length and received treatment after being hit on the hand.

"They batted very well and Rahul Dravid played an important innings which showed why he is a world class player," said Fletcher.

"He showed a lot of guts and he took a few knocks, but they both made sure they knew where their off stump was and played accordingly."
