Vaughan Gives Ashes Fitness Promise

Michael Vaughan will miss the ICC Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka as a precaution but insists he will be definitely be fit for the forthcoming Ashes tour.

Vaughan, who missed out a double century for England when he was dismissed for 195 against India at The Oval, is taking no risks with a knee problem.

He told Channel 4: "I had it scanned a few weeks ago and it showed up a couple of tears in the right knee.

"I'm missing the Champions Trophy but it's just a precaution. The knee needs clearing out and the surgeon is going to have a look at it but there is no doubt that I am going to be fit for the Ashes tour."

The England opener admitted he was frustrated at missing out on a double hundred for the second time in the series - having scored a career-best 197 at Trent Bridge.

"It's disappointing not to get a double hundred, especially as it's only five runs short, but Zaheer Khan produced a decent ball."

Vaughan has plundered four centuries this summer and he added: "I've worked very hard with Duncan Fletcher who has taught me a few tricks. The wickets have been flat, I've got myself into a good rhythm and I've had a bit of luck along the way.

"When you get past hundred you look to get as big a hundred as you can. It's not often you get yourself in that mode of batting where you are seeing it really well and when you do you've got to make the most of it."
