Hoggard, named in the 13-man squad to tackle Zimbabwe at Lord's on Thursday, left the field during the afternoon to receive attention from physio Scott McAllister on a stiff back.

After Friday's complete washout, rain also shortened the final day's play - but there was still time for Australian-born left-hander Phil Jaques to complete a maiden double-century and Northants to secure maximum batting points.

Unbeaten on 183 at Thursday's close, Jaques moved to 222 off 301 balls with two sixes and 26 fours and was within sight of Allan Lamb's county record score against the Tykes - 235 at Leeds in 1990 - when Hoggard found some extra pace to trap him lbw.

With the skies darkening, Tony Penberthy (32 not out) cracked Tim Bresnan for two boundaries to make certain of the fifth bonus point, and the players promptly headed to the pavilion as steady rain began to fall.

Northants declared immediately at 402 for six, and when play resumed at 4pm Yorkshire batted out time in a virtually empty ground to finish on 109 for one.

The weather caused a delay of 80 minutes at the start of the day, and Jaques was into his stride straightaway with two fours and a three off Ryan Sidebottom in the fourth over of the morning to reach 200 from 265 deliveries.

He celebrated with a powerful pull for six over midwicket in Sidebottom's next over, but two balls later lost Jeff Cook (29) when the left-armer held a sharp return catch with 346 on the board.

Jaques and Cook had posted 134 in 34 overs for the third wicket, but David Sales and Toby Bailey went cheaply as Yorkshire bagged a second bowling point.

The final session was wholly irrelevant in the context of the match but England opener Michael Vaughan enjoyed a gentle net and hit an unbeaten 64 from 56 balls including five fours in an over off Mike Hussey's occasional medium pace.
