Anil Kumble took four wickets as
India warmed up for the first Test against England with a 66-run win
against Hampshire in their three-day tour match at Southampton. The victory would have been even more emphatic but for a ninth-wicket
stand of 57 between Shaun Udal and James Tomlinson. Hampshire's cause was not helped by the absence of John Crawley, who
was unable to take the field on the final day because of a bout of food
poisoning. Needing 253 to win after a generous India second-innings declaration,
Hampshire were 186 all out. They resumed on their overnight 43 for two but suffered a blow when
Robin Smith fell to the third ball of the day without a run being added. He was on his overnight 19 when he padded up to a delivery from Sanjay
Bangar and was adjudged leg before. John Francis and Lawrence Prittipaul advanced the score to 80 before
Francis (19) failed to keep down a short ball from Yohannan and gloved a
legside catch to wicketkeeper Ajay Ratra. On a dry wicket offering gentle turn, a switch to spin paid dividends
for the tourists with wickets falling at regular intervals to Kumble and
fellow spinner Harbhajan Singh. India were always in control and wrapped things up 15 minutes after
lunch when another well-flighted delivery from Kumble deceived Tomlinson
(23) who played across the line and was given out leg before. Udal played well for his unbeaten 36. |
