Imps failure will see a chance for revenge

If the Imps fail to win promotion, they will have a chance to get revenge on Stockport County who were relegated to League 2 last weekend. The Imps were drawn at home to County in the 1st Round of the Carling Cup in both 2002/3 and 2003/4 with Stockport coming out victorious both times.

Stockport became the first team in the country to be either promoted or relegated when they lost 2-1 at Brentford leaving them 20 points from safety but with only 15 points left to play for. They are likely to be joined in relegation by Peterborough, Wrexham and Torquay who are all some way from MK Dons in 20th place.

Stockport are the only team to be confirmed in this Division next season as no current League 2 club, with 15 points left to play for, are 16 points below 7th place and/or 16 points above the relegation zone meaning that in theory, any body down to 18th place Notts County could get promoted although the chances of that happening are extremely remote, anyone up to and including 16th placed Grimsby could still go down although it is still likely that the two teams who currently occupy the relegation places.

A few more teams could confirm their spot in League 2 next season, Barnet can get promoted if either they win or Carlisle fail to win. Peterborough will also be relegated if they don't win and even if they do, an MK Dons win would relegate the Posh. Bury only need to a point to confirm League 2 football next season and a Kidderminster loss would also confirm Notts County as guaranteed place in this Division next season. Southend only need 4 more points to guarantee at least a playoff place.
