There have been a LOT of players whose surname began with G and one of those, was a former European Cup winner. There is also a record transfer sale, a few club legends, a father and son playing 11 seasons apart and of course, those 1 appearance wonders.

Peter Gain – Gain signed from Tottenham Hotspur in 1999 and was easily the most talented player in the team, how, he very rarely showed the passion that the other players did and he quite literally looked like he couldn’t be bothered in at least 85% of his matches. He did however play an impressive 258 times for the Imps before leaving in 2005 for Peterborough. However, despite all those appearances, you could count on 1 hand the amount of times he actually gave a damn and you’d probably still be wasting 3 fingers.

 

Gallagher, Jackie – A 1 appearance wonder in the 1976/7 season.

 

Galloway, Mick – Mick joined the Imps on loan during the 1999/2000 season and played 5 games for the club. He also played for Notts County, Gillingham, Chesterfield and Carlisle.

 

Gamble, Willis – One of the few players who played in the season where City were relegated to the conference and also in the season when they won promotion back. He played 54 times between 1985 and 1989.

 

Garratt, Martin – If you believed the computer games at the time, Martin Garratt was Ronaldo in disguise, however, he was far from Ronaldo’s skill and only played 3 games for the Imps in the 2000/1 season.

 

Garvie, Johnny – The tough defender played 192 times between 1950 and 1956.

 

Gaston, Ray – Made 4 unremarkable appearances in the 1969/70 season.

 

Gedney, Chris – The midfielder made just 4 appearances between 1962 and 1966.

 

George, Kevin – Another one appearance wonder, this time from the 2003/4 season.

 

George, Nelson - Another one appearance wonder, this time from the 1946/7 season.

 

Ghent, Matthew – The former Aston Villa youth goalkeeper impressed in his first appearance for the club, however, in his second, his injury time mistake, where he allowed the ball to go between his legs on the ground, meant that the Imps were eliminated from the FA Cup and he is apparently now a taxi driver in the Birmingham area.

 

Gibson, Bob – The former Hull and Gateshead man played just 47 times between 1951 and 1955.

 

Gibson, Colin – Made 37 appearances between 1955 and 1957 before played for Cardiff, Newcastle and Aston Villa.

 

Gilbert, David – Made 23 appearances between 1980 and 1982. Also played for Scunny, Northampton, Grimsby and West Brom.

 

Gilligan, Jimmy – Jimmy was far from a regular first team and in 5 season between 1982 and 1987, the goalkeeper made just 11 appearances. He did however have regular first team spot at Watford, Grimsby, Swindon, Cardiff, Portsmouth and Sheffield Wednesday.

 

Gilliver, Alan – Another journey who made 39 appearances between 1970 and 1972. He also played for Huddersfield, Blackburn, Rotherham, Brighton and Bradford.

 

Godbold, Harry – The former Sunderland and Hartlepool player made just 23 appearances for City between 1965 and 1967.

 

Gordon, Byron – Played in the 1974/5 side but made just 6 appearances for the club.

 

Gordon, Chris – Chris joined via the youth system at Sincil Bank in 2002/3 but his only game in the first team was as an unused substitute at Cheltenham in the 2003/4 season.

 

Gordon, Gavin – One of the more successful strikers in the recent past and joined City in the 1997/8 season from Hull and made 115 appearances for the squad before leaving for around £500,000 in the 2000/1 season to go to Cardiff. He has also played for Oxford and Notts County.

 

Gordon, Jimmy – Depsite 3 years at the club between 1975 and 1979, he played just 6 games for the club.

 

Gorton, Andy - The popular goalkeeper played 24 games in the 1989/90 season. He also played for Oldham, Stockport and Crewe.

 

Gould, Geoff – A loanee who made just 1 appearance in the 1968/69 season.

 

Graham, Doug – The former Newcastle United star, played 191 games for City between 1951 and 1957.

 

Graham, Peter – Played 5 seasons for City between 1973 and 1978, make 162 appearances in that time.

 

Grainger, Jack – Made 45 appearances for City between 1957 and 1959.

 

Grant, Gareth – How the hell this guy played for City once is a joke, but playing for us five times was taking it too far. He was initially on loan in the 2000/1 season before signing full time in the 2002/3 season and in those 2 spells, those were 5 incredibly long games.

 

Gratton, Dennis – The former Sheffield United schemer made 51 appearances for the club between 1959 and 1961.

 

Graver, Andy – A small handful of players only ever have 2 spells for the club but Andy Graver is one of the very very few to have 3 spells at one club. His spells were in the 1950/1 season, 1955/6 season and between 1959 and 1961 and in that time, he made an impressive 298 appearances for the club. A true legend of the club will never be forgotten by those who saw him play and he was described by many of that period as the closest thing that Lincoln had to George Best.

 

Graves, Rob – Despite spending 6 seasons at Sincil Bank, Graves only made 87 appearances for City between 1959 and 1965.

 

Gray, Bobby – The goalkeeper made just 2 appearances in the 1949/50 season.

 

Greaves, Ian – A former Manchester United and Oldham player who joined the Imps for the 1960/1 season, playing 13 times for the club.

 

Green, Francis – A striker who joined the Imps in 2003 from Peterborough United and was a regular fringe player who would often be given many chances, but had a relatively poor scoring record. He joined Boston on loan during his 3^rd year at the club before rejoining and performing exceptionally well in several games.

 

Green, Horace – Horace made an impressive 220 appearances for the club between 1949 and 1955 before then going on to play for Halifax.

 

Green, Russell – A regular from the subs bench appeared a relatively small 135 times between 1957 and 1964 for the Imps.

 

Greenall, Colin – A player who played 54 times for the Imps between 1994 and 1996 and also played for many teams including Blackpool, Gillingham, Oxford and Bury.

 

Gregson, John – Made 37 appearances for the Imps in the 1967/8 season before being surprisingly released. He also had spells at Blackpool, Chester, Mansfield and Cambridge

 

Gresham, John – A goalkeeper in the 1800’s for the Imps, however, his appearance record is unfortunatly unavailable.

 

Grobbelaar, Bruce – Bruce had a reputation after being accused of taken bribes to concede goals on purpose and when he joined in 1998, many fans were weary of this and despite keeping a clean sheet in his first game, he inexplicably acted like a crown in his second, letting in 4 at Wycombe and he was deservedly sacked the next day.

 

Grotier, Peter – Another club legend who made 263 appearances for the Imps between 1974 and 1980 and really excelled under Graham Taylor. West Ham, Cardiff and Grimsby also had the services of a class-act during his career.

 

Groves, Paul – The former Grimsby manager made 10 appearances on loan for the Imps in 1989/90.

 

Grumment, Jim (Jr), When Jim Grummet Jr, playing for a club where he dad had become famous and even rarer, making more appearances than his father. Jim Jr played for the Imps between 1963 and 1971 and made an impressive 274 appearances for the Imps before leaving for Aldershot and he later went on to play for Chester and then Rochdale.

 

Grummett, Jim (Sr) – Jim Sr joined the Imps after the end of World War 2 ande made an impressive 179 appearances for the Imps before retiring, his son, Jim Jr, joined the Imps 11 years later.

 

Guest, Brendan – Brendan joined the Imps just after the Imps had won promotion in 1976 and played 109 times in 1980.
