A century from Steve Stubbings put Derbyshire in a commanding position at the end of the second day of their Frizzell County Championship encounter with Glamorgan. Stubbings shared stands of 96 with Michael Di Venuto and 192 with Andrew Gait to steer the visitors to 353 for four at the close, a lead of 395. Dominic Hewson remained unbeaten on 35, alongside captain Dominic Cork, who had seven runs to his name.

Cork was involved at the start of play as Michael Kasprowicz and Simon Jones provided him with two more wickets to take his tally for the innings to six as Glamorgan were dismissed for 175. Kasprowicz played down the wrong line to fall lbw, while Jones nicked a cover drive into Karl Krikken's gloves.

Figures of six for 51 were no more than Cork deserved, especially in view of the disappointment he must have felt at seeing his side bowled out for 217 on the opening day.

Any hopes Glamorgan had of repeating their first-innings bowling feat disappeared within moments of Stubbings and Di Venuto arriving at the crease. Kasprowicz and Darren Thomas, both of whom had trouble with their radars yesterday, served up a diet of half-volleys and full tosses as 24 of the first 27 runs came via boundaries.

Di Venuto was particularly harsh on Thomas, and forced him out of the attack with a blistering assault which saw four successive balls of his fifth over find the fence. Di Venuto managed to maintain his run-a-ball tempo, contributing 62 to an opening stand of 96 that was broken only when a mis-timed drive off Dean Cosker ended in the hands of Matthew Maynard at deep mid-off.

It was somewhat typical of Glamorgan's wayward bowling that Stubbings reached his century by tucking Cosker down the leg side. It had taken him 165 balls and a little over three hours.

Smart work from Maynard at midwicket saw Stubbings run out attempting a quick single, and in the same over Thomas found the edge of Gait's bat with a full-length outswinger. Croft did the rest at first slip.

Luke Sutton scratched around for 76 balls for his 15 before Jones and Kasprowicz combined to bring about his downfall, one of few negative points on a thoroughly positive day for Derbyshire.
