Durham resumed on 63 without loss, 158 ahead and in a good position to challenge for that first victory. However, Durham lost two wickets in the opening over. Jonathan Lewis was dismissed for 31 with the first ball of the day, Graeme Welch getting the lbw decision as the Durham skipper played back to a straight one. Three balls later Gordon Muchall tried a flashy back-foot drive but achieved only a thin edge which Karl Krikken snapped up behind the stumps.

With the hosts struggling, the rain came to the rescue, and only 5.2 overs were possible before the players went off for lunch. Play finally resumed just before 4pm and Gary Pratt and Nicky Peng got on with trying to set Derbyshire a big target for victory. The pair took the Durham second innings past the hundred before Pratt became Welch's third victim of the innings, going lbw for 46.

Marc Symington scratched around for almost an hour for his five runs before falling lbw to Tom Lungley and Andrew Pratt added only two before suffering the same fate. Peng was looking assured at the other end and brought up a well-deserved half-century before driving uppishly off Mohammad Ali on 57 and Dominic Hewson took the catch.
