Glamorgan reached 243 for 7 by the close of the first day of their three-day tour game against the Boland Academy. Robert Croft, batting at number 6, top-scored with 62. The runs came fairly quickly from the 68 overs possible, but no batsmen went onto make a big score at the Somerset West Ground. Croft lost the chance to build on his impressive half-century when he fell in the last over of the day. He and Mark Wallace, playing his first game of the tour after being rested for the one-dayer on Wednesday, had a bit of rebuilding to do after none of the top 5 had gone onto make a half-century. All of the batsmen had some time in the middle to make an impression, with Hemp and Maynard looking in the best touch before both fell short of the 40 mark.

This match gives a clear indication of who Glamorgan are planning to play in the Championship games for the coming season. If Hemp continues this good early form, he will almost certainly open with Steve James, as he did here. The middle order was as expected, but most interestingly was the fact that Adrian Dale was chosen to bat at number 3 above Powell and Maynard. Croft will fit in at 6 and Wallace at 7, but it is the identity of the four bowlers that will bother Glamorgan the most. Hopefully by the end of the second day of this match, they will know some more of the answers.
