Glamorgan started their pre-season tour to South Africa with a comfortable 189 run win over a Cape Tech XI. Most of the batsmen chipped in with runs to set a total that was far too much for their South African opponents. Keith Newell and David Hemp, playing his first game back for Glamorgan, set the base for a big innings. Their opening partnership was worth 157 from 25 overs when Hemp was caught for 72. Newell went onto to make 83, and although Croft and Maynard failed, Steve James and Michael Powell picked up the pace towards the end of the 50 over innings, in putting on 96 for the fifth-wicket.

Glamorgan’s score of 312 for 6 required the Invitation XI to go off quickly in their run chase, but Andrew Davies and Darren Thomas pegged them back by sharing the first four wickets. Croft picked up a wicket in his first over, and this started a steady fall of wickets as Cape Tech. Capitulated from 82/4 to 123 all out.
