Arsene loves to use marital analogies for footballing issues. He recently said of Colegate, that if someone came to your window and spoke to your wife every evening you would want to know what is going on.
Another expression could be used to describe the visit of Spurs, here comes the bridesmaid who is never the bride. The only pleasure they have left is wrecking someone else’s fortune. Having suffered the indignity of watching Arsenal win the league at their own ground last year the fates have combined to bring them a wonderful opportunity to advance Chelsea’s Championship Title by a whole week. Like some mad professor plotting to rule the world, as they imagine drawing at Highbury, you can sense the excitement reaching fever pitch as they shriek "mine all mine", except it won’t be, it will be Chelsea’s. How sad that fans of this once great club has been reduced to being a glee club for the exploiter of the Russian poor. Chelsea have already won the Premiership, Arsene has congratulated the team, but not the Oilgarchy, and Mourinho has no need of a bridesmaid – he would rather Arsenal won. He doesn’t want celebrations ruining his preparation for the Champions League. So if you really are Chelsea fans Totts, just roll over and lose, there’s a good boy. I must say I was rather surprised when Spurs drew at Liverpool, it sounded impressive. But then on Saturday Crystal Palace beat the scousers 1-0. The penny dropped, it was more about Liverpool looking to Europe than a great Spurs revival. They will get a reality check on Monday night – when they face a team that really wants to win. This takes us full circle to the musings at the beginning of the article, Spurs role as not quite bridesmaid. This for their fans will be the big one, more important than seventh place, it’s the chance to be the man who shot Liberty Valance. Thus they will want to stop us at all costs. Expect the team bus to be parked across the goal, as they try to stop us scoring. No doubt they will be heartened by the absence of Henry and Freddy, but Bob is on good form and will want to make up for missing that second chance at Chelski. Plus he nearly always scores against them, including in the five-goal fest over there earlier this season. Five – four did not justify our dominance, but since then our defence is much improved – so they needn’t expect four goals on the break, or from set pieces this time. Once again we are left to wonder if Campbell will play, remember it was the disgraceful reaction of Spurs’ fans to him at White Hart Lane that sent him on to reach the great form that saw Arsenal win the league. Did we ever thank them for that? But the fact that there is a question mark over Campbell demonstrates how much progress Kolo and big Phil have made. The only other question is who will play up front? Bergkamp did a good job on Wednesday; he tied Chelsea defenders down leaving space for Reyes, that’s why Wenger was reluctant to sub him. But he looked tired towards the end; there is an argument for starting with Van Persie. I am sure he would like to score against our ex rivals.
