Coventry have confirmed the appointment of Ben Russell as club captain in succession to Will Johnson. The 22-year-old full-back and fly-half is believed to be the youngest player to hold the position in Coventry's 132-year history.

 

"It was a bit if a surprise when the call came, but a very nice one," said Russell, who joined in the summer from Saracens and captained the side against Exeter last week in Johnson's absence.

 

"I only found out today that I am the youngest, but I've been around the game for a long time and have picked up a lot of experience playing under some great captains.

 

"I had a word with a few of the older guys in the squad before I accepted and they were quite happy about it.

 

"I'll enjoy the responsibility of being captain and it's something I'll look forward to."

 

Flanker John O'Connor has been named vice-captain.

 

* APOUA STEWART'S appeal against a two-year ban for a positive drugs test, scheduled to take place in London yesterday, was adjourned and will now be held in the New Year on a date to be decided.
