England had another great day at Lords dominating the whole day. England debutant Sajid Mahmood grabbed a fantastic three wickets in his first four overs in Test cricket as Sri Lanka lost 6 wickets at the end of the days play. Pietersen, who began the day on 54, and Paul Collingwood proceeded to produce a 173 run partnership for the fifth wicket. Pietersen finally departed for 158 - the exact same score he had achieved against Australia on the last day of the 2005 Ashes series a year ago.
It wasn't just Pietersen that was on form, debutant Sajid Mahmood shone with the ball and ended up with figures of 3-9 and 3 of his wickets were in his first four overs.
England fans were delighted to see another young talent come through the ranks and enjoyed the great pace and inswing bowling the young Lancastrian showed.
He had wickets on his mind but initially it was Hoggard who supplied them with some inswing after an early tea had been taken.
Another drop catch from Geraint Jones off Andrew Flintoffs bowling didn't dampen the crowds mood as England finished the day completely in control.
England will be in boyent mood after today as there batting and new look pace attack has proved to be a success.
