Yorkshire are in no hurry to name the replacement to Craig White as captain. White's sudden resignation has sparked specualtion about his successor. Yorkshire chief executive Stuart Regan revealed the board would hold discussions over the captaincy as soon as they had collected their thoughts. Regan said: "Craig remains a vital part of our batting line-up and his performances in recent matches have been particularly impressive. There is no doubting his commitment to Yorkshire and his decision to stand down as captain has probably taken a monkey off his back."

David Byas, the director of cricket, said: "Craig has given 120 per cent. He took us up to the First Division of the Championship and we have stayed there and I would like to say a huge thank you to him. He has done as much as he can."

White has been a popular captain in what has sometimes been a divided dressing room on other matters. He may have pre-empted the conclusion of behind-the-scenes talks about the captaincy that have been rumbling on for a few weeks.

Yorkshire may now decide to appoint a successor from outside with Pakistan batsman Younis Khan thought to be among the names in the frame. David Fulton has left Kent and is reported to be considering offers from other counties arousing speculation that the Yorkshire committee may see him as an ideal short term replacement. Of the current Yorkshire side Bradford-born Anthony McGrath must be favourite to be given the job for a second time.
