Yorkshire Yet To Decide Number of Overseas Players

Stewart Regan states that Yorkshire has still to decide on the number of overseas players who will be at the club next season. He said "Whether we go for one or two overseas players next year is something else we need to sort out." With the departure of Darren Lehmann and the likely non-return of Jason Gillespie this leaves the club with a lack of proven quality in both the batting and bowling departments.

One of the key benefits of having overseas players in English domestic cricket has always been the work they do with youngsters, something Lehmann was reknowned for. There are some exciting young talents in the Yorkshire side and for them to work with the best players available would seem a practical necessity.

In 2008 the counties will be allowed only one overseas player per team, but until that time it would appear advantageous to maximise the benefits that these players bring. Stewart Regan's comments on the uncertainty at the club appear to be cast against a constrained financial backdrop, whether that is to do with contract offers or unsustainable wages.

The Yorkshire County Cricket Club has committed itself to a massive and costly redevelopment of the Headingley Ground. Let's hope that this does not overshadow or take money from team budgets.
