Glo'shire get the better of draw with Northants

After losing much of the first two days of the match through rain, Gloucestershire fought out a praiseworthy draw with promotion-chasing Northants. Central to Glos' successful quest for maximum batting bonus points was a career best 161 by Kadeer Ali, which included nineteen boundaries. He shared in big partnerships with Marcus North (64) and Chris Taylor (50).

When the game finally got underway after lunch on Wednesday, captain Lewis decided to bowl first. Although he and Kirby found it difficult to extract anything from a placid-looking wicket, the introduction of Newby and Saxelby, followed by Brown soon reduced Northants to 114-5. The fall of the fifth wicket brought Hall into join Sales, who was already looking dangerous, and they put on 141 before Newby had Hall caught by Kirby for 58. Sales continued to bat with freedom and found another willing partner in Louw, who made 46. Sales was eventually dismissed by Kirby for 148 and the Northants innings closed at 349 - just short of a fourth batting point. Newby ended with figures of 5-69 - his best figures for Glos.

The Gloucestershire reply got off to a steady start, with Kadeer and Porterfield adding a half-century partnership before the latter was caught behind off van der Wath. Marshall failed again but North, Taylor and Brown all provided good support for Kadeer who went on to score a career-best 161. He was caught and bowled by Louw to give the South African his only wicket of the innings.  Lewis helped Brown take the score past 400 to earn Glos a rare fifth batting bonus point, before declaring with little time left. Hall (3-60) was Northants best bowler and Monty Panesar send down 29 wicket-less overs, conceding  86 runs. Northants faced just a couple of overs before the captains agreed on a draw. Gloucestershre took 12 points to Northants 9.
