Essex travel to the lovely Fenner's ground to take on the students of Cambridge University in the final friendly before the season starts for real next week against Gloucestershire at Chelmsford in Div 2 of the Championship. Andy Flower is here & should make his debut in this match lasting 3 days.

The match is a final warm-up before the season starts properly for Essex next week and we are likely to field the side that will start next week's Championship match at Chelmsford vs Gloucs. New overseas player, top Zimbabwean Andy Flower has arrived and although he was delayed for Press Day (which was on Monday) he is here and is expected to start for Essex today, though I doubt will keep. Barry Hyam has impressed with bat and gloves during the pre-season friendlies and should play and keep depending on the line-up Essex want, whether it be another seam bowler, or all-rounder. I'll stick my neck out and predict the team to play vs Cambridge:
D.D.J. Robinson I think the team almost picks itself. Although Flower might keep vs Gloucs next week he is unlikely to in this game as he's only just arrived and naturally a bit tired still. Foster and Hussain won't be playing because of their England contracts, so Hyam will play and I'm sure will keep. Clinton should get in for his batting at 3 and occassional seam bowling, whilst Ilott should get the nod ahead of the out-of-form Cowan. The forecast is cloudy in Cambridge for the next three days, with a max temp of 14oC though no rain is forecast. 'Scimitars' will be keeping tabs on the match and daily reports and scorecards will be here every night. Date: 20/4/02 |
