Up We Go Again

Won Again!
By Grockle
September 11 2007
With the game running away from us in the wake of an onslaught from Ramprakash, the boys done good, kept their nerve and whipped the game away from Surrey with nothing to spare. Division 1 again guys! Justin Langer kept faith after Marcus Trescothick had anchored our innings and via storming fielding resulting in 4 run outs and some real quality death bowling the Brownhats came up 5 short.

v Surrey Pro40 @ The Oval Tuesday 11 September 2007

Scorecard

TV Highlights

Just a quick note today after an absolutely storming win give Somerset a double promotion.  We are Division 1 again ladies and gentlemen.  It's official in both forms of the game AND unless Durham do better than we do on Saturday, we will be crowned Champions in both forms of the game.  Unprecedented stuff!

Tonight we were nearly batted out of a game by the Mighty Ramprakash after the equally Mighty Tresco had given our innings some meaning with 124 majestic runs off less balls.  But as the Surrey captain Mark Butcher gallantly said at the end of the game, we were 20 runs better than the home side in the field.

On a batting pitch with little going for the bowlers, Ian Blackwell pulled a game back into the frame after an onslaught from Butcher and Ramps took the game towards an inevitable Surrey victory with  8 overs for 33.  With FOUR run outs from a fielding performance of terrier like proportions, it was left to Langer to have faith with 8 overs to go in the returning Charl Willoughby and Steffan Jones.

Inswinging yorker after inswinging yorker kept the opposing batsmen on their toes quite literally and even though Ramps kept pulling Surrey back in sight, the boys kept doing the job.  Eventually he went for one single too many and Craig Kieswetter nearly broke the stumps in half running him out.  From then on in it was all one side and by the time Jonah bowled a dot at the end, we were 5 runs clear and in the First Division.

Lots of patting the back of Marcus and lots of smiling Somerset faces after a truly committed and stirring game.  Proud to support them tonight and they looked equally proud to be playing for a club that certainly could not be accussed of under-performing this evening...or even this season.

Top of the (cricketing) world Ma...on to Middlesex and a big party!!

Great summing up. Those boys were all heroes tonight. The pressure was immense, but they came through it with smiling faces. Oh happy days.

Thanks Grocks, I listened to the whole match, not even a break for my lunchtime stroll and these days I am always expecting something good to happen. Tresco is out of this world but McKenzie, Blackie, Durston also contributed. In the field, even when Ramps and Butcher were dominating, something was always going to happen in our favour, this time the fielding. The last 7 overs I was walking around my office but the result was not in doubt.

The best part of it, the image of these guys enjoying themselves. If they can carry that into the Division 1s next year then the results don't matter, actually they do but we shall not be relegated but will be in contention next year as well, as the great JL has said!

That last sentence was constructed by Mr. Appleton.

What a great summary to a great night's cricket.
It was a privilege to be there. Got to be honest, I'd given up. Where Marcus oozed class, so did Butch & Ramps - it was an obvious home win - until Blackie came on, and the fielding really kicked in. It was good all game, (I just counted one mis-field turning a dot-ball into two), but towards the end it was just terrier-like.
The enjoyment was clear on the field too. I just loved the dummy fielding by ?? who dived and pretended to throw. It was all-action stuff.
Well done boys, I was proud to witness that.
And the vocal support? - pockets of fans dotted ALL over the ground - excellent!!!

A lovely post Congar, say hello to Mr Appleton for me please.
It sounds like a great night at the Oval SC,the belief in this team all season has been a joy to behold,it has made all the difference.
Early in the season we commented on how the boys looked different this year. They were playing as a team, for each other. They have never given up,they know that they can do it.
If we can take this belief and momentum with us into next season we'll not just do well in the first division but I honestly believe we'll win it.
I can't wait for the lads to show those Yorkies that they are the real deal and not the cheap immitation many of them think they are.

Congar, I think your last sentence may have been constructed by Sir Humphrey Appleby!

I agree with all the comments made above. It was all epitomised for me by the way that Charl and AC threw themselves about in the field. They were like 21 year-olds.

Re: Up We Go Again

Lots of sides are realising in retrospect that you do not run when Caddy and Willow have the ball in their hands...or near to them. There was a brilliant run out last night when AC swooped in, picked up and whipped it to Craig with Ally Brown out by 2 yards...unfortunately it wasn't Ramps who realised it was Caddy and returned to his ground.

Ramps spent the whole of the incident looking for the fielder, he never once looked at his partner who was hareing to his end...such was the worry about the quality of our fielding.

The two old guys send the ball in like an Exocet from the boundary...it's a joy to see. They may not be quick but don't expect them to be innaccurate!!

One of the real joys last night was Peter Trego's whole attitude. He was really really up for it at the start and when he got wellied, he immediately came back with a peach of a slow ball. In the field he was a demon and I would have been equally happy had Justin gone to him instead of Jonah at the end because he was causing them as much trouble when he bowled.

What a situation, more bowlers than you need and faith in them all!!! Must say that I would have taken a defeat if the winning run had been hit by Ramprakash because he was such a commanding figure for his side that he would have deserved it. Cool, calm and in control all the way through. The only reason we got him was because he was running out of credible partners and he had to get back to the strike end to finish the game!! He should have got man of the match because although Marcus was majestic, Ramprakash was the reason it was such a close game.

As I recall Groc, Caddy has always had a good arm, cant' comment on Willow yet, but hopefully will be able to next year. I'm determined to get down for at least a couple of 1 dayers. Can only imagine how good it was to be there, but as usual the board thread was excellent. Nerves were jangling and nails bitten, but we got there! Keep up the good work!

Agree about Grockle's MOM comment. Ramps didn't offer a chance and never looked like doing so. And oddly enough, (and partly because I'd given up by then), I too was happy to accept a winning boundary from the man. How he never established himself as a test player is beyond me. Reading Simon Hughes's books recently when comments were passed that he was seen as a genuine talent at 15 makes me wonder if he was pushed too early. Some take time to mature.

Still who cares, we won, they lost and it's great!!!!
And I recently posted about Jonah bowling at the death and why - could see it last night. The guy's got bottle. Was still standing up to be counted even after Ramps tonked him for 6 in the 38th!!!

For once, there were very few nicks for 4 to either fine leg or third man. I don't think either my wife, nor I, could have stood it if Jonesey had been nicked for 4 to win it for Surrey!

Who said it's only a game?

Yep don't let the opportunity pass will you Botham(Sm119)

Perish the thought that we'd ever let the issue drop even though it's been debated to death and we've won promotion in both forms of the game without the position being employed. Ahh well each to their own.

Jonah at the death. Earned his transfer on last night alone. Did what he was brought back to do. Cool as a cucumber. What a bloke to be able to turn to when everyone else is going to pieces. Did what he was told and is totally at one with his belief in his ability to do the job. And he did it in tandem with Charl from four overs out after Ramps had taken Wes on and was ready to win it quickly.

Really impressed with the maturity of the man.

Fine third whatever you want to call it wasn't employed all season despite your almost obsessive attempts to have the idea discussed everytime it wasn't.

We qualified for the first division of cricket in both formats without taking your wonderful advice Mr B.

That to me shows what a vitally important "innovation" it would be. What is the point of innovating if by doing so you change nothing - pointless use of resources.

Insults are the last resort of the intellectually bankrupt. 'Nuff said in my opinion.

As is said on Jerry Springer, "whatever"!

Anyway, each new invention is usually thought of by one person who is brave enough to ride through all the ridicule, in order to preserve what he / she believes in. Where would we be today without such belief.

One day my idea might be used and it may or may not work, but without trials nothing would change.

Re: Up We Go Again
Posted by: Grockle (IP Logged)
Date: 12/09/2007 15:44

Well I'm sure that you'll let us know when that experiment occurs...although I doubt you'll be able to stay away from the subject until that day comes.

There's a distinction between 'invention' and 'innovation'.

However you view yourself Mr B I don't think you were the first to 'invent' the idea of the fine third thingy.

I think the fact that that idea has not been innovated in the many decades of cricket's life suggests that it is an 'invention'identified as redundant by those who came before us and has not been returned to in the changing nature of the game because it is still redundant as a concept.

But you keep banging away at it if you want to and we'll keep smiling away at how well the side is doing without employing it.

But don't forget to let us all know when they put the idea into practice so we don't miss it.

oh and by the way.

Using Jerry Springer to back up an argument is the last resort.......

Botham. We have debated, argued, and sometims got a bit personal on this one. As some of the players read the message board, do you not think that if the idea warrented merit, they would have taken the idea to AH and JL and we would have seen it in operation by now? We have discused this in detail so many times, let it drop. If we see your new magical feilding position deployed, I will be one of those who apologises and congratulate you for your vision. Until then, let the judgment of 200+ test matches and even more 1 day internationls be our guide. NOW LET IT DROP.

Married to a girl called Tricia and lives on the Kingsland Estate, and I'm told that if you view his council house after too many Jamaican woodbines it looks the "spits" of Gracelands.

'WP', JL and his players may or may not have read about this, but so far, to my knowledge, no-one has been brave enough to try it. The facts speak for themselves, just study the number of boundaries scored in these areas in 20/20.

When I get the chance, if they're willing, I'll discuss this issue with them.

We haven't debated this issue very much at all. Most times I have raised it, I have been shouted down by a few. If you, or Grockle, don't wish to debate it, then fine, just ignore it. If no-one posts a reply, they'll be no reply to reply to!

Whatever happened to freedom of speech.

Recently I was lambasted for mentioning local football, on the day we won at Trent Bridge. The thread apparently had nothing to do with SCCC or cricket. Now we have a long running thread about the Rugby World Cup. Yes, I may be a pain in the wotsit, but at least I'm consistent and yes, persistent!

I havent read your post on local football Both, but I have no argument with the non cricket threads, football, rugby or otherwise. If you have looked at the football pages on this network, you will understand perhaps why Jim posted his thread here. It's a far better (and nicer) place to chat. Like you say, if you don't like a thread or comment, ignore them. I can be opinionad at times, but I am also intellegent enough to realise that sometimes, people don't agree with me, and ignore my opinion, so i let it drop. I seam to remember we discussed this in depth not so long ago, and it was a point you kept making when I was a regular at home matches 6 years ago. Lets get on with celebrating a FANTASTIC season shal we? (and anything else we may or may not want to talk about?)

We tried the "leave it and let people post if they are interested" solution about a month ago when you and BJ had a run in about this.

You suggested we ran a poll (original) I said I would leave the post as such a poll on the basis you suggest above.

I left it, no-one posted, I removed it.

You resurrected it again despite that pretty clear indication.

Can I therefore suggest that you take your own advice and maintain your much vaunted 'consistency'.

Freedom of speech is alive and well and living in Somerset. "Boredom of speech" I can't promise the same for.

Ref the football, world cup stuff etc - no-one has complained to me about any non cricket threads this season except at the start of the season when I closed down the alternative forum that ran in the winter.

The reason I took exception to your post last month was because during the Nottingham match you had been critical of Justin Langer on the Friday evening of the game, saying you'd rather Cameron White returned next season.
First thing on the Saturday morning you were once again critical of the man on the very morning we had the biggest session of cricket for many years.
I was not the only one who thought your continued criticism of the captain was out of order.
It was the type of comment you'd expect from Ramp Boy or Flanneled Fool,it was poorly thought out and inappropriately timed.
Your constant moaning since has been tiresome and not what you'd expect from a committee member.
As Grockle has said, everybody has made it clear what they think of your idea.
Why can't you leave it at that?

He's working his little socks off and is too professional to talk to us plebs when he's at work.
He'll be back soon,I've given him permission today.

James, you are a magnanimous lad. LoL must be very grateful.

Pleased to hear he is fine, but what is this word 'work' of which you speak? I'm sure I remember it from the dim and distant past, but I just can't put a meaning to it.

Don't tell anyone but I'm sure he is a spy for the secret services.
He never lets on what he does,I even tried getting him drunk at HQ one day but all to no avail.
A very shady character.

Yes, BJ, I had similar thoughts when he was still in Lhasa. Especially as he was popping all over the world at frequent intervals.

I had this picture of a sort of James Bond figure ( okay, maybe a more mature Bond) in my mind, then I saw his picture on Tractor's website. He looks rather like me, so yes, a James Bond figure after all.

LoL welcomes this attention and even a few not wholly inimicable mentions in his long absence from this site for reasons far too politically sensitive to disclose - but who he actually is LoL has not the slightest idea.

He does, however, remember who Botham is and feels that he can no longer refrain from saying that the moaning manner of the aforesaid "supporter" inflicted directly upon him at a time in the summer of 2006 when he was recovering from serious illness and simply needed some peace and quiet in congenial company was the last thing he needed to ensure speedy recuperation.

LoL

Has he upset you since LoL? What brought that lot on a season later?

He took some stick during your absence I hasten to add and has gone off to contemplate a bit I think.

I see your friend has taken to posting on MTWD LoL.
Perhaps he's becoming a Middlesex supporter!

The thing is Grockle,he dished it out too and whilst I know we should sometimes refrain from getting involved it is often difficult in the heat of the moment.
Most of us are passionate cricket fans, people who think about cricket twenty four hours a day, seven days a week, every week of the year. That is what makes this County one of the best supported sides in the business.
The criticism of a poster who continually runs the side down and makes ill informed comments may seem unfair to some but then again if you walk into a hornets nest and disrupt it waht do you expect? We were stuttering against Notts when this all blew up.Tensions were running high.
During a game I get as revved up as I did when I played sport,my wife finds it both annoying abnd funny. If somebody says something daft I'll respond, that is in my make up.It's not personal,it's mostly banter.
I found the accusations of bullying so outlandish I nearly gave up completely.I despise bullies and if I ever thought I was involved in such a horrible practice I'd stop immediately and sort myself out.To repond to provocation is something different in my opinion, especially when the person involved should know better.
Let's not have bad feeling during the close season, let's all light some candles, put on some Jake Thackray and have a good long soak in the bath.
Not altogether though I hasten to add.
