More of a Test? Bristol Monday

Fit Again
By Grockle April 7 2008
It's not warm in Somerset and I doubt it's much better up the road but it's dry and so we'll get a 50 over workout against the Old Enemy on the car park up the Gloucester Road. Not a lot more will be open though people so if you're going take the home comforts with you!

v Gloucestershire @ Bristol (50F) Monday 7 April 2008

No scorecard again I'm afraid

A more instructive run out today despite the credible opposition that the students from Cardiff put up on Friday.  We meet this lot in every one day competition we have this year so we may get some indication of how we stand after the 50 over smack about today.

An almost unchanged side has been announced for the game with only Pete Trego being included after the Dubai and MCC jaunts of the early year.  No Ian Blackwell and no Andy Caddick.  The latter is expected to play at Fenner's, the former?  Not a lot of info there I'm afraid.  With Langer, Willoughby and Thomas (well maybe) still not here, this isn't going to be a run out of our one day line-up but there are some people who need to make a claim against more credible opposition.

Andy Hurry has announced Marcus will be in the squad along with James, Omari, Craig, Pete, Ben and Steffan.  They all must be looking for a place in the short game first team.  The others are looking to make a case for selection or at least first team consideration.  Carl might get the gloves today as he's been named.  It would be even more intersting if he plays as a batsman!!

The slow allrounders Wes and Arul must make a good impression, especially as the firm money is on Omari taking any second slot in a one day eleven.  Arul has a case as a batsman, does Wes?  Is the fact that Neil is named a suggestion that Mr Edwards is looking o expand that flashing blade into a one day scenario or is Gazzard looking for that 'pinch hitter' role?

Mark is hoping for a pace slot and Andy certainly didn't look out of place on Friday.

And where for John Francis?  It's all sooo interesting.  If anyone gets any insights today please post them here because there are so many options, in the words of the greats....."My brain hurts"

It's starts in 5 minutes at 12...enjoy if you've made the trip.

The Match

Well the info is courtesy of the official site but there are some real interesting bits to it.

1. Bit of a run fest then! Very little seems to have been made of the fact that Gloucestershire hit a real total in a rain affected game of 252 (I assume it was off 50 but probably not as there were 2 interruptions).  Not an afternoon for ripping through the opposition then.  Arul took 2 for 2 but the lack of comment about the rest suggests it wasn't our bowlers day.

2. We're then set 268 and two batsmen not known for their run rate in one day games go off on one.  Neil Edwards and John Francis in the role of fast scoring short game front enders?

3. No mention of a Banger contribution so it seems he may not have played or went cheaply.  Then another indication that James Hildreth has wintered well and that Craig Kieswetter is still the first choice of wicket-keeper/batsman.  Good partnership from them of over 100 in a lot less balls (64 off 36 for Hildreth and 50 off 39 for CK).

No one day indication of willow ability from Mr Banks yet then and Arul had a good game so there is still some uncertainty of who would get the second spinning batsmen position - assuming Ian Blackwell is fit.

We get 272 for 4 and win with 5 balls to go.  Must have been a decent game to watch.

Thanks to Somerset Official for the background.  More on Thursday

I see AC is not in the squad.

Have I missed something? I hope this does not mean that the great man has had any sort of setback - or was it always the third game that he was being aimed at?

It was reported on the main site that AC was expected to start his comeback, at Fenners, I think.

21 degrees ...

Sun's just breaking through some early morning haze ...

Looks like being a nice afternoon ahead of us ...

Just off to the nets with a couple of players to get some video capture done ...

Mind you, I'm in Spain! Pre-season friendlies - a choice of Bristol or La Manga? I think I know where I'd rather be!

Stay warm fellas.

Well it's not raining down here.

Who expects Neil Edwards to expand his involvement in one day and open with Marcus today? If it isn't him then who will pinch hit? Omari? Pete? Carl? Steff?

Based on what I saw him do at Lord's last year, I'd plump for Mr Trego, Grockle.

Me too AG - think it would be between him and Mr Banks if he has the WI flair and eye. May not be him because he is very involved in the bowling in one dayers and may be doing that at the end of the opposition's innings but I'd like to see him doing it.

It may all be moot because we may see Mr Edwards saying. "I'm here" and allowing Banger free rein.

I've just taken delivery of my annual copy of Wisden. As is my custom, I turned intitially to David Foot's report. And what delightful reading it makes;

"On occasions there will to win, an amalgam of steel and self-belief was almost tangible."

"A season after their wooden spoon, they produced a constant bravura, a jaunty confidence and an envied competitive edge to suggest they may be one of the best teams in the land. Not many counties had the all-round talent to match them."

A lovely @#$%&-bit from the game at Essex last season;

"When Willoughby dismissed Wesley it was his 600th career wicket. He also had made a total of 599 runs."

In pure frustration, I called Glaws for some info on this game, and hopefully a score.

No luck, apart from that it was reduced overs due to rain, and Gloucestershire were batting at 14:52.

Glos are 140-3, reduced match with 18 overs to go in their innings. Not sure how many overs they are playing in total but would think about 40.
No info re wickets or team.

No, I work at the county ground and saw Brian Rose who told me the score! Not much chance of any more updates but thought it was better than nothing.

Great to see we're still in that winning mood, the confidence it brings can mean a hell of a lot when the going gets tough.
Lovely to see John Francis getting runs and Arul doing well with the ball.
The competition for places is going to be fierce.
Just what we want.

And it's on the report at the top of this thread AG if you don't feel like going to the official site.

Do any of you ever bother to look here as well or shall I just pack it in?

How strange, when I opened the thread, there was no report. Then, when I read your post, Grockle, and checked back, there it was. Now, on my display, it's gone again. Most odd. Maybe I need to go and lie down.

Still, very good to hear that JF may be finding some form

The threads which are directly linked to front page stories do appear to behave oddly at times, but I think that it's just that they present differently according to which way you access them.

If you access page 2 you don't get it. You have to follow the thread through I think

It's not sour grapes people. I have no problem with people linking to interesting stuff elsewhere, that's why there's a link facility but there are two issues I have.

1) please do not copy whole bunches of reports from elsewhere because we have copyright issues if you do

2) I'd appreciate it if you referred to stories on the official site rather than link to them. I don't remember any official links to here when we have something of interest or any recognition that we even exist - just a minute I'll check....Nope we don't seem to be on their links list - when it becomes a mutual co-operative relationship I'll be all for it. Until then advertising they have something is fine - actually providing a route for them I'm a little less happy about.

They've more money than me let them do that themselves

I've said it before and it's not patronising at all but for many this is the Offical site.
The Club site was known as the "other site"if I remember correctly.
I read the reports Grockle, when I am unable to get there they are invaluable.

One thing that worries me is that they scored so many in an interrupted innings.

Is there a scorecard floating about anywhere?

It does sound like we won with ease, though.

It may simply have been a very, very flat road of a pitch.

Can you confirm that it is ok to link to other sites; I often get cricket stories and put the link so that the complete story can be read?

It's not a crime Mike I wasn't getting at anyone. Of course it's OK to link to anywhere.

It's just that we get little enough credit from HQ and we've been here a decade (longer than the official site in fact).

It's also that in relation to the Somerset site, we all know where it is so if we want to I'm sure we can find our way to the story in question.

It is a shame that some of the so called official sites don’t recognise these kind of sites for the good work they do by increasing the interest in the club,

I noticed the Gloucester’s site was promoting their new look site yesterday, it hasn’t improved the reporting of matches it is still showing yesterday’s match when Gloucester was still batting with three overs to go. Or are they another club that only report good news
