Sussex and weather

There'll be better days
By Grockle
May 17 2008
Sussex are holding out for the draw on the last day of this CC1 game. Another fixture badly affected by weather which hasn't destroyed the game but has made a result a really diffcult outcome to forsee. Despite an the early filip of an excellent batting performance from the home side attached to a surperb century from Hildreth, this game may peter into a draw unless the rain holds off.

v Sussex (CC1) @ Taunton Wednesday 14 May 2008

Scorecard

The weather plays another part in Somerset's attempts to make a play for a significant impact on their return to the County Championship big league.  After being foiled in a competitive game at Old Trafford and losing out to the elements in their game against Hampshire at home, they are once more facing the need to bowl a side out before the heaven's open and put a stop to festivities!

Being put in by Sussex, we have to assume because the visitors hoped for the type of assistance Hampshire and especially their seamer Tomlinson found from an early damp Taunton wicket, Somerset amassed a huge 557 for 8 declared.  James Hildreth once more made us all wonder about the honours this young man may bring to the county with a brilliant 158 - the cornerstone.

Hilda 4  Hilda 6 Hilda runs

Despite being run out for 99 in a bizarre fashion,

Neddy run out 99

Neil Edward's enforced absence because of family issues seems to have done him no cricketing harm and it was good to see him back in the big scores.  Marcus Trescothick weighed in with 76 along with middle size scores from the captain (44), de Bruyn (62) and Trego (41).

Hilda ton Big Ton for JH

It was a big ask in between the rain showers but no-one expected much of a game with a very poor forecast for the second half of the game.  It proved to be patchy but there was more play than expected and Somerset made the most of their time on the field.

Removing Nash before there was a run on the board was a good start and though Yardy and Hopkinson looked more stable the bowlers stayed on task. A brace of wickets to Ben Phillips around the 100 mark, especially that of the very dangerous Goodwin for 0, brought some hope. In conjunction with Jones the attack took out 2 more middle order batsmen between 100 and 120; Hopkinson (112 Jones)and Prior (118 Phillips).

Although Adams, Wright and Martin-Jenkins tried to hold the seams together, the Somerset seamers kept finding gaps and the weather kept upsetting the rhythm.  Willoughby removed Wright and Trego capped off a good allround first innings performance by wrapping up 3 wickets of the tail.

RMJ out

No Heroics from Martin-Jenkins this time around

Lewry 2

Lewry went for one but nearly went for less!!

203 all out and following on but we'd lost over a day to the conditions and the forecast for the remaining 4 sessions was gloomy even if it stayed dry.

Day 4

The morning stayed dry although very overcast with little wind to move the cloud on and the threat of rain almost all the way through play.  Sussex started on 36 for 1.  Andy Caddick was seen bowling off a few paces just before hostilities commenced (he returned at lunch and gradually moved the length of the run up back but he isn't exactly 'steaming in' yet.

Yardy is being watched as an opener, although a number of people around the place were asking how he ever gets runs!!  His stance is extraordinary.  However he is still there and he all but opened as Nash faced 3 balls less than his first innings total of 4 before being caught in front off Willoughby again without a run on the board.

Yardy

Yardy holds Somerset up before finally going for 78

The second innings almost followed the first entirely from there as runs were picked up where there were no risks and bowlers bent their backs for an early breakthrough.  When it did come it was at the same score as in the first innings 100. But ominously this time it was Hopkinson who went as Yardy passed 50.  Goodwin did not go early again (can't expect it twice in the same game from this man) and at lunch with 129 up for 2 the Sharks were not in too much trouble.  Other than a few Blackwell balls that seemed to confuse Yardy in particular, no bowler looks the cert for a wicket.  At 2:00 with 56 overs of the game to go it is dry but not bright and the draw is the most likely end product of this encounter.

Progress may be slow but it is made when Yardy's resistance is finally ended by Steffan Jones at one end and Marcus Trescothick at second slip.  155 for 3 brings the partnership to the wicket Somerset have to break quickly.  Murray Goodwin and Chris Adams.  But Goodwin goes to 50 off 99 balls (but with only 4 fours) and seems quite willing to accelerate the scoring rather than just plonk the ball around.  Accordingly in the 66th over sees the side from the south coast pass 200 off the bowling of Zander from the River and the bat of the said Mr Goodwin.

And so to Tea with no more wickets and very few chances of one - a couple of slashes into fielderless parts of the ground and not a lot else.  By the break Sussex are 245 for 3 with Goodwin heading for a century and Adams nearly halfway there.  Ian Blackwell starts the last attempt at the Old Pavilion partnering Zander de Bruyn bowling from the River end but most of the crowd have given up the ghost and these final 30 overs are being played to about 300 spectators.

Ben Phillips takes the new ball in the 81st over at 258 to try and get rid of one of these two.  Goodwin must be under pressure needing 2 for his century but a misfield takes that pressure off as we gift him a second and he goes to the three figure mark off 169 balls with 10 boundaries.  One of the characteristics of this season in comparison with recent ones is that the outfiled is no longer lightening fast.  It seems that this is because the captain has asked for the grass to be kept longer than usual in order to protect the ball.  The spectator side of the ground has a huge boundary anyway but few balls are reaching it.  A final throw of the dice by Langer is to throw the ball to Charl for a last hurrah from the River.  Few people expect anything to happen and this game will fizzle out about 5:00 as Hampshire did last week in totally different conditions.

The problem at the moment is that we do not have enough variation without the change of pace of Turner and the extra bounce produced by Caddick.  Once good players are in we cannot surprise them enough unless the ball moves and the moment the swing has gone we need other skills that are presently not in the Somerset arsenal and won't be until the squad is fully fit again.

Inspired umpiring! Willey offers the light, everyone accepts it and at 4:45 the whole thing is finished, handshakes all around and 12 points to 7.  Could have been better, could have beed worse.

Tomorrow at 12 noon then - Worcestershire and some sun of heaven's sake!!

Right - will soon be bedtime here in Grizzzlyland.

So, in the knowledge that we take on Sussex tomorrow & will be half way through an innings by the time I wake up & log on, could you chaps just organise a reasonable scorecard when I do.

Waking up to 23-6 last time was not a nice breakfast experience !

Come on Zummmerset !!

I don't think we'll be starting with a damp wicket again!

I predict a lunch-time score of 103/2, irrespective of which side is batting.

103/2 if Somerset are batting - using the English modality
103/2 if Sussex are batting - using the Australian modality

Have just looked at the nearest available forecast from the weather service that I use - in this case, it's for Exeter - and it cites the chances of rain as 60%, 30% and 50%, respectively for the next three days. Saturday is supposed to be dry.

If the forecast that Messrs Langer and Rose have is anything like that one, I'd suggest we might field if we win the toss, purely in the hope of a contrived finish on the last day. Of course, that would also assume that we have faith in the weather forecast.

If it's true that Munday is playing the second XI game then, with that info combined with a dodgy forecast, then I'd have thought that Jonah would replace MKM in the team. And Jonah has been bowling well in the short-stuff so it will be interesting to see what he will do, if picked.

With this line up we bat down to number 10! Bet we don't need to!

Nice and sunny in TA1 at the moment but, as AG says, the prospect of rain tomorrow and unsettled on Fri/Sat so could be a frustrating few days.

Indeed we do, SJB.
First Class hundreds from everyone but the two C's; and it won't be long before Craig sorts that out.
This team has 166 f/c tons between them. And Langer has 82 of them. I wonder whether getting into the 90's this season might be another persuasive reason for him to come back and have another dart next year?!?!?!?!

No surprise that Lancs are crumbling (if they still are.)

As for JL, FE, if there's one man who I do not think would come back for the sake of personal achievment in terms of numbers and averages, I think it's him.

Indeed, I believe JL has said that he quit playing for WA because he did not have the motivation to simply try and pile up big scores. Rather, he said, he wanted to achieve something bigger for a team - i.e winning the title here.

I'm hoping to watch some of the Surrey match at Whitgift School and I don't mind if the maestro chooses a day of my attendance to do the needful (as long as all his team-mates fail to reach double figures).

You could well be right about JL, AG.

I am gratified that amongst my transfers this morning were the additions of Simon Jones and the still point amongst the Lancs wreckage, Stuart Law.

Disappointed though, that I took a punt on retaining Kabir Ali and he didn't pass muster!

I'm trying to be frugal with transfers, and may make no further changes until the T20 "window". There are one or two in my team who are unlikely to feature; although zero points from non-participation might constitute comparative success!

I'm going to try and stick to the GFL thread for these discussions though!

Re: your remark about Craig and his imminent ton, FE;

It has occurred to me that the reason that Craig is currently opening in the short-stuff might just be partly because somebody whose opinion is respected within the club – Mr Rose, Mr Langer, maybe even Mr Cook (?) – has suggested that Craig’s technical game is good enough for him to become a long-term opener for SCCC in “proper,” cricket. And facing Steve Kirby – who bowled well with the new-ball – I didn’t see anything obvious which would suggest that he can’t become an orthodox opening batsman.

Of course, if it is someone’s intention to make Craig into an opening batsman, you could say ‘wouldn’t they pick him in that role in the first-class stuff.’ However, there’s no sensible case that could possibly be made for dropping Neil Edwards from the first-class team at the moment so I guess that would be my answer to that.

Re Craig as an opener, I suspect that he wouldn't be viewed as a one day opener and wicketkeeper. I suspect that it is more his ability to hit over the top against the new ball within the field restrictions.

Does anyone notice how often he gets out after a break (lunch, tea, overnight). I noticed this last season, and the same happened against Hants.

Just at this moment Edwards and Trescothick have identical career averages of 37.74. It's surprising that Trescothick's is so low and relatively late for him to improve it dramatically, whereas for Edwards it has to be onwards and upwards.

I was surprised that Edwards is still only 25, I read the other day, he seems to have been around for ages.

I'm not surprised about Banger's average because he had one great year followed by several years of struggle before being plucked out of SCCC and into the England team by DF. Test cricket then gradually improved his overall average, but he was coming up from a mark of about 31 or something like that, I think.

Re: Sussex - now come on chaps !
Posted by: Shepton Paul (IP Logged)
Date: 14/05/2008 14:07

...and Tres' average in county cricket will be much lower than Neil's. Marcus' Test record is very good, against some seriously good attacks - which proves little except that MT is a class, home-grown cricketer, Neil may become one and stats can hide all sorts of things!

Re: Sussex - now come on chaps !
Posted by: AGod (IP Logged)
Date: 14/05/2008 14:10

I think it shows that Marcus is a better player of even top-quality spin and short-pitched quick stuff then he is of county trundlers on pitches that nip around a bit (I suspect it's the feet thing that make it so.)

It's also why I wonder if we won't see Banger batting in the middle-order in a few years time - because he is as good a player of spin as you will find, but not necessarily the best at dealing with dibbly-dobblies swinging and seaming the new ball around in helpful conditions.

He's done pretty well since he returned from test cricket to be fair... I think the confidence gained from years playing at the highest level has been invaluable, regardless of technical limitations against your honest county dibbly dobblers!

Yes, his record since coming back is much better than his record between that brilliant first season and the time when he went away to England. His record in first-class cricket is also much better since he gave up England than was his record for SCCC whilst he was a current England player (I mean since the start of last season.)

Good to see some form from the boys against the champions - they put us in which is another good indicator for how we've played.

Pity we didn`t crown a brilliant batting display today with that extra run for 400, for it could be rather more significant than appears at first sight. It was certainly there for the taking against a tiring and really pretty feeble Sussex attack minus Mushy.

With heavy rain forecast for all day tomorrow and most of Friday, we may now have to `waste` three overs before we can get Sussex batting when play eventually resumes. One will be to get that extra run and then two more overs between innings when we declare on 400.

We needed six from the last over today. de Bruyn hit a boundary from the third ball, but somehow the scoreboard made 394 plus four equal 399. So when he glanced the fourth ball for a single, the board moved on to 400 and everyone cheered. In reality, of course, it was only 399 and Hildreth let the last two balls pass harmlessly to the `keeper.

A bit of a Fred Karno end to an otherwise outstanding performance.

Superb performance by the little maestro today,he's a gem.
What happened with poor old Neil CjM?
Was it just a clock up or a superb bit of fielding?

Neil didn`t depart to a cock-up, BJ, more a combination of bad luck and fast reaction by Chris Adams.

He became a touch frustrated on 99 when three thumping drives went straight to fielders. On the fourth ball, he came down the wicket, just failed to reach the pitch and padded it straight to Adams at first slip.

Instead of following what would have been most players` instinct to claim a catch, Adams flipped the ball underhand at the wicket and Neil`s full-length dive back to his ground was in vain.

He did indeed look shattered, but received a generous round of applause as he walked off.

Great photos Mike, thanks. They really bring the comments and posts to life.

Here is a report on the day courtesy of The Guardian

It was James Hildreth who compiled an untroubled hundred on Taunton's tranquil pastures, but it was the century that got away that attracted most interest. Neil Edwards was on 99 when he was lured so far down the pitch by the off-spin of Ollie Rayner that he managed to be run out by Chris Adams from first slip.

On top of the stand, two former England off-spinners, Vic Marks, chairman of Somerset's cricket committee, and Jack Birkenshaw, an ECB pitch inspector, were united in view that there was no justice. Morally, Rayner deserved to be credited with the wicket as much as if Edwards had been stumped, but because the wicket had been broken by slip and not the wicketkeeper, Matt Prior, it was a run out and so the bowler went begging.

The MCC has just rewritten Law 6 to combat the growing power of bats, and protect the essential balance between bat and ball, and while they are in the mood maybe "Law 39: Stumped" could have a makeover. Only a wicketkeeper can make a stumping, so giving the bowler the credit. But Rayner was just as deserving whether the wicket was broken by wicketkeeper, slip or after the ball had rebounded off an unsuspecting pigeon. Bowlers at Taunton need all the sympathy they can get.

Birkenshaw would have been aware of the previous championship match here when the pitch began too damp and Somerset collapsed to 23 for six against Hampshire before batsmen emphatically regained control.

Sussex inserted Somerset on the off chance that it might happen again, but the pitch was dry and any swing was largely wasted by bowlers struggling to find their line against two left-handed openers. Marcus Trescothick fell for 74 soon after lunch, a first championship wicket for Corey Colleymore, and Justin Langer fell cutting. Hildreth continued pleasingly to the close, with 127 not out from 161 balls

It was Corey Colleymore who couldn't get his line against the two left-handers, bowling down the leg side most of the time.

We missed the chance to declare when we foolishly ended yesterday one run short of a fifth bowling point, despite ample opportunity to get there in the final hour.

Now we might as well bat on until tea and not squander the two overs that would otherwise disappear between innings.

Yes, FE, Zander seems to be doing a solid job for the club.

And I think it has to be said that Mr Rose has a pretty good record on the recruitment front. Since he moved into his current role, I don’t think there have been too many James Bryant type disasters on his watch. Even if some folk don’t like the overall thrust of the recruitment strategy that we are following, I think it’s realistic to suggest that folks should have some confidence in the people that Mr Rose is recruiting.

Looks like we’re going with the “only bat once,” mentality to this game. I’d guess that we might simply bat on to the close and try and score as many as possible in that time, then declare overnight and try to bowl them out twice in two days (if the weather permits that much play.) Worst case scenario, we should at least take maximum points from a draw, since we’d have two days in which to take ten wickets to accomplish that.

Re: Sussex - now come on chaps !
Posted by: Frome Exile (IP Logged)

Re. declaration: the plan has surely to be to bat only once now that we have a platform, rather than run any risk of having to build again. I'd be quite happy with only giving them the last hour tonight.

Simultaneous - honest!

I suspect the plan was to declare before the extra bowling point and Pete, Craig and Ben were asked to throw the bat and knew all along the declaration would be before the last over for bowling points.
Ben going in to bat was probably more about not asking Willoughby or Jones to bat when they were going to bowl very soon.

Absolutely, Jim.
My 600 was obviously optimistic, but perhaps that was in part due to CricInfo's time-lag leading me to think there was more time left in the day than I thought, and in part due to my overlooking the likelihood of bad light. But the intent, in terms of two darts with the cherry was there!
Adams must be kicking himself for fielding!

I when down for the play this afternoon and the conditions never lifted, it was cold, drizzly and misty at times.

When the declaration came it was misty and I thought they wouldn't even come out afterwards but they did, it wasn't long before the light deteriated when the drizzle started again.

I think the declaration was left so late because JL realised that there was every chance that bad-light would be offered very soon in the Sussex innings.

Two days for 19 wickets -and prob some lost time too.

You are right, BJ, to thank your deity that JL is captain and not you. But what about his batting compared with yours? He's a bit scratchy isn't he? We all know you could do much better than him.

A win over the next two days could take us safely to the right end of the table, though still behind Notts, who look likely to beat Lancs thanks to the productivity of one MJWood, that well known Kolpak, whom Trent Bridge must regard as a very worthwhile investment so far.

cricinfo claims that we are starting at 11:20am?

Does that mean we're starting in drizzle? If so, then is the delay to the start simply about the outfield trying out?

Or is the drizzle forecast to stop within 10 minutes or so?

It might be the kind of day where Ian bowls a lot and where we are forced to bowl James at intervals, I guess.

A real concern is the number of result pitches that seem to be around elsewhere in division one. For instance, Notts reportedly produced a cracked pitch for their game with Lancs and have profited with an easy win. Batting does not appear to be easy at the Rose Bowl, either and there is likely to be a result in the Yorks vs Durham game, too.

Great photos Mike BOS.

Isn't it good to see a cricket team wearing proper sweaters and caps rather than the man-made, all singing, all dancing, sweat wicking, cooling, warming, ultra-brite kit that the England guys have to wear nowadays.

Still, it's no doubt available from ECB shops and should make a mint seeing as youngsters will want to have it. Just so long as it doesn't disappear as quickly as the Man Utd grey kit.

Ah, hold on - we're wearing that one now ...

Anybody any clues on this one.

Willoughby 5.0 0 16 1
Phillips 6.4 2 16 0
Jones 2.3 0 8 0

Jones opened the bowling this morning, Phillips was left on 6.3 overs last night, which at the time I assume they went off for light, or now I am thinking was Phillips injured.

I am totally confused

And it now sounds as though rain is imminent.

Dissappointing that so much rain will have denied us an excellent chance of a win, but at least maximum points with a draw would be a fair haul and get us away from the bottom.

Not a lot happening I have to say. ben Phillips doesn't seem in any problem and Andy C was bowling very carefully during warm up this morning.

Yardy isn't in any real trouble although a couple of Blackwell balls have suggested something but if we get two more sessions before the heavens open we'll be damn lucky.

Some people think he's all over.

Re: Sussex and weather
Posted by: A God2 (IP Logged)

well, not really sure exactly what to make of that.

On the one hand;

1) Sussex are not champions for nothing. I checked through last year's scores and there were quite a few occasions where Sussex had the intestinal fortitude to bat out last day draws.

2) We were, effectively, trying to bowl them out on a day three pitch, not a day four one. It's possible that with a slightly more worn pitch we might have fared at least a little better.

But;

I'm starting to get the nasty, nagging feeling that I will shortly be issuing some kind of apology to KT. It's beginning to look as though the great Andrew Richard Caddick (and possibly some flimsy opponents) might be all that stood between his prediction and reality.

Last year, AC took 30 odd wickets at Taunton in, I think, 7 games. Jonah had a relatively very good haul of 20 odd wickets at home (more than he took on his travels). Charl, I think, took about 25 wickets in 8 home games.

But that was it, really. For instance, I believe that Pete took only 10 wickets in a full slate of home CC games (21 away from home.)

Now, Pete's already stepping up that wicket-taking rate, in that he took four in this one and, I think, a few against Hants too.

But in 2nd innings of home games last season, it was invariably Caddy that did most of the bowling and took most of the top-order wickets.

From Grockle's description of the extreme care that AC was taking in warm-ups, then I would guess that he's not especially likely to be named for Tunbridge Wells. If he doesn't make that, then the club then has a choice of bringing him back for one single CC game at Whitgift OR giving him the whole 20:20 period to fully get over his injury, get himself match-fit etc and then bringing him back for the final 11 games. Given that choice, I would suspect that club would take the more prudent option?

Tunbridge was described as "painfully slow," by Wisden last year as the home side easily batted out a draw against Yorks in a game which (minus) the rain, looked a lot like - on the scoreboard - the one we just played with Yorks playing the SCCC role and Kent the Sussex one.

I would not be at all surprised to see us head into the 20:20 break with no results (either way) in 5 CC games.

Re: Sussex and weather
Posted by: AGod2 (IP Logged)
Date: 18/05/2008 08:46

Mr Rose says that Mark Turner should be back in contention for Tunbridge.

Also, Alphonso Thomas has been passed fit for today's must-win FP game with Worcs.

I wonder if we might see Thomas getting a go in the CC side at some point soon? Surely we should have a look to see what he is capable of?
