v Surrey CC1 @ Whitgift School Friday 30 May 2008
So who the hell will play?
We can expect to see
Marcus Trescothick and Neil Edwards and Justin Langer and James Hildreth and Ian Blackwell
Number 6? Well Craig Kieswetter will play at 7. I'd put Peter Trego in at 6 and drop de Bruyn simply to make space. If he plays the options in the bowling don't change but the open spaces decrease by one.
I'd expect Charl Willoughby at number 11 - we can't even consider dropping him.
8? 9? 10? Perm from Andrew Caddick (surely he'll play if he's fit to but should it be that certain unless he is back to old ways?), Mark Turner (if fit), Ben Phillips(can we leave him out?) Should he be a straight rival for Steffan Jones? Will Alfonso be part of the equation? And what of Munday if the weather changes?
I'd go for Turner, Caddick and Jones but I'm not sure they'll be that radical. It will probably be de Bruyn, Caddick and Phillips.
What a choice.....
Friday
So we now know the position. We open this game with
Trescothick, Edwards, Langer, Hildreth, Blackwell, de Bruyn, Kieswetter, Jones, Thomas, Phillips, Willolughby
No Caddick, no Turner, no Trego and the weather precludes Mike Munday. Not really the problem we expected and worrying that the players we expected to increase our arsenal's capability are still unavailable. Peter Trego's absence is a second worry as the man was in such good allround form but it provides another chance for Jones to become indispensable.
Presently Surrey are in, put there by Justin who must have seen something in the pitch. We got Spriegal early but then Ramps helped Newman put some runs up. However, Willoughby and Phillips got amongst the big guns around the 100 mark and we saw the back of Ramps, Butcher and Afzaal with Newman following at 140 thanks to Alfonso's first Championship wicket (I think). Presently we are beig held up by Benning who has pushed them past 200 and they stand at 203/5 at Tea time-ish

Absolutely need to get into the form horses named Butcher and Afzaal, ASAP.

Maybe we should play on school pitches more often, how about Castle School?

For some strange reason, there are 61 people presently interested in that little gem of news Will.

Does anyone else agree that Ian should come out immediately after lunch?

You'd have to imagine that Lancs would have struggled, batting last, versus the great Ian David Blackwell. And we had Munday playing too!

This lunch thing. I heard others say that last week when Kent only needed another 20 or so might well have got them if there hadn't been the lunch interval. I've always said that lunch was a great idea. Long may it continue. I'm having an extended lunch break from now until tomorrow afternoon when that train leaves for Canterbury. This really is a fantastic result. Headaches galore on team selection for the Yorks game next week (if not the Kent one-dayer). Let the thunder resound and lightning dazzle that lovely ground for the rest of the afternoon. An extremely enjoyable weekend in the company of grocklees old and new, and apologies to those Surrey members who were probably a little cheesed off with my cheering every run on Saturday (there were quite a few of them - runs I mean). On wards and upwards.
