Intersting Choice
By Grockle
September 17 2008
A strange time to be playing cricket in Scarborough but here we are and this is a major game of 2008 as we stand so close to the Championship trophy. Arul Suppiah is drafted in for this one - an interesting choice which suggests that Marine Road will not be the 'buzzy' track it usually is and may need two spinners to get us the points we need!

v Yorkshire LVCC1 @ Scarborough Wednesday 17 September 2008

Scorecard

Day 1 starts on time but we only got half a day out of the first part of this game as bad light takes our 50% of the overs.  Langer chosoes the following eleven;

Trescothick, Himself, Suppiah (hmmm), de Bruyn, Hildreth, Blackwell, Kieswetter, Trego, Thomas, Caddick, Willoughby

Welcome back to Craig Kieswetter with grateful thanks to Carl Gazzard for his sterling work during his injury.  Arul Suppiah takes the number 3 spot, possibly because people expect the wicket to be slow and liable to take spin.  Not as unusual as it seems, he has done this jobe before if people cast their minds back.  Everything else seems to be in place as usual.

With the toss going to Yorkshire we find ourselves batting first and from a Chgampionship point of view this is not the scene we wanted to see after the first ball of the game

Matthew Hoggard gets Trescothick with Ball 1...not the breatest of shots Marcus Old Boy.

Marcus is on his way back after quite a messy swipe at Hoggy's first ball.  Bad bad start Somerset and Arul is in a hugely responsible position almost immediately.  Justin sees the requirement to be the strokemaker and takes on that role smacking 13 fours in an innings of 55 that moves us up into the 80's before he loses his wicket via Rashid and the hands of Mr Hoggard.

This brings Zander to the crease to establish the base for a late innings push.  But, once again the scenario doesn't quite play out that way.

Yorkshires (from left) Richard Pryor, Jacques Rudolph and Gerard Brophy successfully appeal LBW for

LBW to Rashid 6 balls into his innings and Somerset are 91 for 3

So it's down to Suppiah and Hildreth to get us into this game.

The boys settle into the game and despite the stoppages and the early finish they move the score on to 160 for 3 finishing the day on 58 for Arul and 29 for James.

Hopefully wew'll get a full day tomorrow.

Banger chasing a wide half volley is not everybody's idea of a dream but then again I can see what you mean.
Let's hope we have a cracker,it's always good to see the boys and girls from the "corridor".

I'm with them all too, even the kit bag and the coach driver.
No need to single one player out, that's not right and makes a divide.
If you want to send him your personal thoughts that's great.
Don't include us all in that though as I want every last one of them to do their best.

ECB preview of the match.

Former England opening bowlers Darren Gough and Andrew Caddick are set renew their rivalry one last time when Yorkshire face title contenders Somerset in Division One of the LV County Championship.

Gough and Caddick formed one of England’s most potent opening bowling partnerships under Nasser Hussain but have retained a healthy rivalry since

Mark Turner also included in the Somerset squad. So if the wicket looks really quick, the last place might well be between him and Wes Durston.

For Yorkshire, Matthew Hoggard faces a late fitness test on a shoulder problem.

Lets hope the positive cricket returns, everyone contributes, and this time in 5 days time, we are contemplating our greatest success in the clubs history.

The team selection on the other site is from.

Langer, Trescothick, de Bruyn, Hildreth, Durston, Blackwell, Trego, (Kieswetter or Gazzard) Thomas, Caddick, Willoughby, Munday, or Turner.

I don’t expect Munday to play, and if Turner plays who do we leave out Trego?
We could play Trego for his batting and leave out Hildreth.

As for Caddick being refreshed we all know in the past Caddick always needed a lot of overs under his belt, I hope it doesn’t back fire leaving him out in the last match.

Come on lads lets give it everything.
Im predicting Turner in for Durston, Caddy in for MM.
Rightly i think JL wants results in nest two games, therefore we need 20 wickets, attack of Charl, Caddy, Thomas, Turner, Trego, Blacky is best chance i feel of getting them.
Team therefore i reckon will be
JL, MT, ZB, JH, PT, IB, CK (or CG) AT, AC, MT, CW.
Tail will start at 8 but best chance of getting the wickets.
Come on lads, all the best

Surely mike leaving the most consistent all rounder out of todays game would not be the greatest idea.
I think its quite simple,Munday will be out and Caddick in and then a toss up between Thomas and Turner, personally i would go for Turner.

The inside line now is that Arul is set to open and JL move down to No.3. This probably means dropping Wes Durston.

Somerset captain Justin Langer told BBC Somerset: "We know that if we win at least one (of our two remaining games) then we will win the County Championship."

"That's a real positive for us. I'm happy to be in our position - we're one point behind Hampshire at the top of the table and they've played one more game than us."

"We're in an enviable position compared to some of the other counties."

“Brother of” I wasn’t suggesting for a minute that we do leave Pete out, there may be a possibility that Turner may play and I was wondering who the club will leave out if they did. (Sometimes team selection can be baffling)

I guess Caddick will be in for Munday and if Turner is in whom do we leave out?

Sorry mike,my personal opinion is if the wicket does have a bit of pace in it then surely Thomas would make way for Turner.
I then think we have a very well balanced attack with Charl,Caddy,Pete and Turner along with the spin of Blackie.
Its always nice to be able to bring on someone who can hit the deck hard and make it uneasy for the batters and i think that is what Turner would bring to the side.

Mike -- the North Marine Road track has a reputation has a bit of a trampoline. So, I'm not surprised that one top extra top three batsman has been picked. Now, as LoL suggested, one might have thought that Neil Edwards would have been the call, but he does appear to be very firmly out of favour now, which is a shame.

p.s. I'm pleased that there is no Naved ( probably their quickest bowler) on this track.

Re: Good luck at Scarborough, guys
Posted by: Brother Of (IP Logged)
Date: 17/09/2008 12:19

Just a theory but does anyone think that the selection of Arul is do with not letting the Yorkshire bowlers get used to bowlimg to 2 left handers at the start of the innings and having our 3 left handers spread out in the top 6?
Just a theory and thats maybe why Edwards did not play.

Re: Good luck at Scarborough, guys
Posted by: AGod (IP Logged)
Date: 17/09/2008 12:19

Having said that, I expected Turner to play as he had done on the Old Trafford trampoline and the fact that he has not played suggests that maybe Langer/Rose are expecting less bounce than usual out of this strip.

Obviously, we have to hope that it isn't dead, though..

The commentators have already been speaking about "indifferent bounce" and mud appearing on the wet surface., so the pitch is probably atypical.

55 runs from the three most senior players (apart, possibly, from Ian) not really what was called for.

What's the verdict from the commentators? Is there a lot of turn out there? Or just Langer being over-aggressive and Zander missing something at the start of his knock?

Update on your rivals.

As you have been informed there is no play at the Riverside today.

The heavens opened in the small hours of this morning and the outfield ressembles a paddy field. However Premiership football has come to the rescue and Sunderland have loaned their heated lamp gantry,to supplement the hot air blowers, to help dry out the outfield. The wicket is okay so Durahm will go into 3 day mode.

The answer is sheer greed yet again - as with the damage done by Arctic Monkeys concerts at Old Trafford last year and the switch to Blackpoool because of an REM one this summer, which between them have already caused Lancashire to lose five days` play over two seasons.

This time the move to Liverpool, somewhat ironically, is to allow the installation of new drainage at Old Trafford in the early autumn, when it is of course considerably cheaper than in the winter.

No doubt one of the experts among our co-contributors will leap in if I am wrong, but according to my calculations the standings at the end of today's play are as follows:

Hants 160
Som 159
Dur 157
Notts 158
Kent 150
Suss 141
Lancs 136
Yorks 136
Surr 121

No positiions have changed so far.

In my view we had slightly the better of today's play, given that we were invited to bat and in some ways I wished we'd batted on through the bad light as Suppiah and Hildreth seemed to be seeing the ball rather well.

Today's play should give these youngsters and the rest of the squad, tremendous confidence. They have battled through adversity and we are in a strong position. Hopefully, tomorrow, the sun will shine and we can push on to 400.

Extract from cricinfo.

Tea was taken early after the second stoppage, and play never resumed afterwards. The natives grew restless, as is only to be expected in Yorkshire, and there were visions of such headlines as "Umpire lynched in final home match." It did seem as if the umpires were unduly pernickity for at least part of the time when play was not taking place, and one would have thought that the players themselves, with their teams so desperate for points at this stage of the season, would have wanted to get on with the game.

But such is the caution of professional cricket, and they tend to give the impression they would rather play with a football on the outfield (as Somerset did) than get on with the real game. With the match unseasonably late for Scarborough, they only had about half as many spectators as usual for this championship match, although still well over a thousand. Most of them as they trailed home today would probably have described themselves as dissatisfied customers.

Under new rules this season, SP, neither the batsmen nor the fielding side have any say in bad light decisions.

It is solely up to the umpires to decide whether the light is playable or not. The only concession is that a fielding captain can ask if the umpires will allow play to continue if fast-bowlers are taken off and spinners bowled instead.

Did 330 miles today to see 44 overs. 52 overs lost to BAD LIGHT - grey clouds all day - no wind to move them on. If this season's rainy conditions are repeated the game must seriously consider that bad light must never stop play. All main grounds should have floodlights. Batsmen are also well enough protected these days. There are very few express bowlers. Very poor shot from Tres who is on a bit of a bad trot lately. 'Dasher' Langer batted well. Plaudits should go to Arul who did super work in testing conditions. Brophy made the worst hash of a stumping against Hildy I have ever seen - he could have stumped him twice over. Back to internet watching tomorrow.

It was announced before the match started that umpire Barrie Leadbeater, who was officiating for the last time in his home county before retiring, was only 15 short of the world record for lbw decisions in first-class cricket.

Was that why Gough chose to field, although it could be argued that by selecting to bat last Yorkshire were even more vulnerable to the Leadbeater finger.

Surrey all out for 267.

Kent 170 for 6, 60-odd ahead of Lancs.

All those matches seeem fairly favourable to us, as far as I can see. Just need to continue doing what we can for ourselves!

It is now Kent that are more of a threat than Lancs.

BBC report Surrey definitely down.

Kent look pretty certain to get 18 pts (3+1+14) while Lancs probably just 3.

I think that means we definitely will be in Div One next year - hopefully as defending champions, of course.

Kent all out for 233 (only one batting point) in reply to Lancs 107. Lancs have already lost a wicket in their second inning.

Notts 54 for 1 in reply to Surrey’s 267

Durham is 62 for 1 with no play yesterday.

And Somerset … we all know Somerset’s score.

I was looking at the Lancs-Kent game in the context of the fact that a) I'd like to face a demoralised, rather than reinvigorated Lancd next week, and that b) Kent and Durham can't both win their last game as they play each other. But I'll admit, reading the runes at this stage is tricky.

Do you not suspect that Lancs will get Flintoff back anyway, though, next week?

As for our position in this one?

On the proverbial knife-edge, I would guess. We all know that a glorious afternoon of Ian and Pete in tandem could catapult us to maximum batting points and give us a chance of winning the match.

Equally, with what's to come (or not) in our batting line-up, a quick breakthrough for Yorks and they would probably reckon to get us for 285 or so...

And to add salt to the wound for Surrey.

From the ECB site.

Surrey’s expected relegation to Division Two was confirmed during a disastrous morning on day two of their LV County Championship clash with Nottinghamshire.

Bad news comes in threes – just ask Surrey captain Mark Ramprakash. After Shoaib Akhtar was struck viciously on the throat before falling on his stumps, wicketkeeper Jonathan Batty was carted off to casualty in Nottinghamshire’s second over after making a mess of a routine take.

That is pretty gloomy, LoL.
Durham still have plenty of work to do to garner a positive result with only two days left.
A Kent victory might not be a disaster, because I fancy Durham to beat them.
Notts still have some work to do, and at least some of the Surrey players will want to go down fighting; and the freedom of having been relegated can do strange things to batsmen.

But of course two wins make all of that redundant.
Caddy and Charl will see us right in the morning.

Let's not be over-critical. The tone or sense of BR's comment may not have come across in print - it could have been a perfectly sensible, not-especially-harsh sentiment or throwaway line which can be interpreted quite differently when written down - much like "I support anyone who's playing England" or "maybe it's their lunch sandwich order".

Try saying it, or one of these phrases, with a smile on your face or in a charitable tone - it will have quite a different meaning. Be wary of what you read, online or in the press...

Pessimism is not in my nature when it comes to supporting Somerset, but I think Notts will easily beat Surrey (they have two days in which to score 150 and bowl Surrey out a second time); Durham will probably end the game with 12 points, while I think it more likely we will get no more than 11; Kent ought to beat Lancs by early afternoon tomorrow, though actually I think this is the one game on which we can place some hope if Lancs can add, say, fifty more.

Quite so, gm. And let's face it, there are plenty of less reliable places to pin one's hopes!

But what's far more important to our success is that I will be incommunicado for almost the whole day. Having been present at our only defeat in the CC this season, and at the gifting of the Pro40 game to Middlesex at Lord's, and having observed the effects earlier in the year of my being in the car, it is becoming clear to me that I am an ill-omen. Let's hope that theory receives further backing today!

Nice words about IDB by Pringle in the DT this morning:

Interesting that yesterday's commentators, who were in most respects very fair-minded (except for referring to PT as the tail) repeated the weary cliche about IDB's reputation as a slogger. From the moment I first saw him, batting in a one-day match for Derbyshire against Somerset, I have regarded him as a player with a magnificent eye and exquisite touch and timing; he can't also help being one of the strongest blokes in the land.

Meanwhile today is the most important day in the history of ever - "hyperbole" is my middle name (and I've claimed it first, BJ, so you can't have it to add to the 23 you already have).

I've told you before LoL to leave my hyperbole alone.
The fact that you've chosen not to just shows the life or death importance of such a post.
Your words will ring true in living rooms up and down the country, housewives will be listening to the radio commentary with bated breath, hanging off every word like a mountain climber clings on to a slippery overhang or a sailor holds on to the rigging in a force ten storm.
Some may say this is the most important two days in the long and colourful history of our cricket club.
Other may say that it is more than that.
To finish I'll paraphrase the legendary football manager Bill Shankly.
'Some people believe cricket is a matter of life and death.
I'm very disappointed with that attitude.
I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.'

Over the top?
Me?
Don't be daft.

I can understand – as you would expect as I’ve been saying the same thing myself – why Mr Rose might make the general point about batsmen failing to kick on to big scores, having got to 50.

What I will say, though, is that it seems odd to single out an all-rounder when the specialist batsmen have surely been as guilty of this as the all-rounders? {FE may prove be wrong about this point from this season’s stats, but I would be surprised.)

Time to stir everyone up.

I'm a little surprised that the great AC has been awarded a further year's contract, unless it includes a fitness clause.

He has played very little this season and doesn't seem as sharp as he was, but maybe that's to do with lack of match practice, as we know he needs to bowl regularly.

In the current match, on what seems a helpful wicket, he's been expensive.

I hope these words will now be shoved down my throat and he'll take a five-fer or more!

Re: Is this it? Scarborough

I hope they will too, Both.

Seriously, I suspect the pitch is much better to bat on now than it was on Day One. We found batting easier yesterday, and maybe the combination of sunshine and time has made it even easier to bat on today.

Looking like a result is gonna be hard to come by, unless Yorks want to take any risks by bailing out early or setting us a gettable target.

Durham 325-4 overnight collapse to 380 all out so drop a batting point.

Kent 10-2 in their run chase in Liverpool.

Only two counties have banned the dog from their 'festival' grounds this season.

Surrey (at Whitgift School)- going down to division 2

and Yorkshire here in Scarborough.. . .

Tea at 326-6 - a much better afternoon, at last - I think 4 wickets, including McGrath and Rudolph, for about 80 runs. Need to ensure we get our third bonus point now (need 3 wickets in 27 overs). This game's gonna be hard to win now, though Lancs' victory may put the willies up Yorkshire and encourage them to go for an unlikely win - great stuff, isn't it...

Situations like that always seem to confuse CricInfo initially. My guess is that there's an automated part of the software which has to see ten wickets before the match can be "won", and that there's a delay until a human interacts with the system to put things right.

Our game and the Durham game went much as predicted, but I think you took your eye seriously off the ball at The Oval (though I correctly predicted that result and hinted at the Lancs one and so maybe should console myself by talking more to the bookies).

Your weekend leave will not now be suspended, but you will be expected to concentrate very hard on brilliant batting for the first half of Saturday at Scarborough, followed by even more brilliant bowling in the afternoon.
