Looking from the wrong en

22 overs bowled but little chance of any more as the rain has set in and the weather isn't moving anywhere.  There's a lot of water on the covers and very few people arond the place.  Somerset are 135 for 2 with Marcus Trescothick on 84 but dn't look for a century in this game!!

v Warwickshire FPT @ Taunton Thursday 14 May 2009

Scorecard

This match seems to be going the way we mostly expected it to go.  The weathemen were so convinced that there was going to be rain blanketing the country they confidently predicted rain across the whole island for the whole day.  Driving to Devon this morning I wasn't as sure but driving backl this afternoon the grey drizzle convinced me that this was a waste of time....but the smell of pork drove me on.

I sit looking at a full set of covers with sruface water all over them and a scoreboard saying we had 22 overs of a Somerset innnings after the Bears put us in.

The side was;

Trescothick, Suppiah, Hildreth, Langer, de Bruyn, Trego, Banks, Gazzard, Phillips, Thomas, Turner

Carl Gazzard gets a rare first team run out due to Craig Kieswetter standing too near his captain and picking up his bug from Monday and being unwell.  he rest is pretty much as expected.  Good to see Turner back fighting fit - especially as Steffan Jones is back in the camp and keen to show that he is available.  He seemes very positive, partly because the guys at Kent have expressed their high regard for him and his ability to be a cog in any first class cricketing wheel.

Batting first we made a decent start despite losing Arul for 16 at 57 to Rankin.  Trescothick and Hildreth moved the score to 135 by the start of the 23rd with the VC on 84.  Unfortunately Hildreth went just before the rain came and Zander has joined the big man at the crease.

Should this end as a 10 over slog in the dimpsy half light of a spring afternoon I am confidently told that the Bears would need 90 off the 60 balls.  More rain seems a better end ot the game than that I have to say.

More if there is any.....

Pinch-hitting opening batter and fast bowler Neil Carter is out of the Warwickshire side for the FPT match at Taunton tomorrow with a groin strain.

They are still hoping to include Ian Bell, if he learns he has not been selected for England in time to travel from Chester-le-Street to Taunton.

Otherwise their squad is: Westwood (capt.), Trott, Troughton, Ambrose, Clarke, Botha, Woakes, Rankin, Patel, Anyon, Piolet, Barker.

The forecast looks bleak for the next few days, so maybe 3 x N/R

Looks like Carl Gazzard will be playing tomorrow (weather permitting), Craig Kieswetter must have got to close to Justin Langer and has caught the same thing that kept Langer out of the last match.

The Squad is.

Trescothick, Gazzard, Hildreth, de Bruyn, Langer, Suppiah, Trego, Thomas, Phillips, Willoughby, Durston and they have included Kieswetter in the list of names.

At least he'd appear to have got his catching sorted out after the hiccup against Durham.

Maybe Wes co play instead of Banks, all he did was feild v Scots.
However all he's likely to do tomorrow is watch the covers!!

I'm not too bad Jim thanks.I'll be down tomorrow but the weather looks very threatening so don't be surprised if no play.

forecast poor but im confident taunton will be ok, many a time i've been at the ground when told its raining in surrouding areas, if its showers we seem good at missing them, see what the morning brings!

Oddly a no result will not do any harm to our chances, we have the lead, others need to close the gap

my train is 9.15 so yes early decision needed, fingers crossed for dry overnight in Taunton and a dry day tomorrow, cloudy/dull is fine, just none of the wet stuff.

JL for Wes and CG for Craig appear the likely changes, id like to see Turner given a go in the last 3 games, especially if we do qualify early

Re: warwickshire team
Posted by: Mike BOS (IP Logged)
Date: 14/05/2009 06:16

It is not the matter of qualifying early we have to make sure that we are top of our group so that we have a home draw in the next round.

When we have done that then I would like to see Munday or Waller in for Banks, and maybe two others, but only after we have won the group.

And now Craig has it?

Is that `swine flu` comment meant to be funny. I don`t expect those who are already suffering from it in this country - or have died from it in Mexico - are laughing.

Re: warwickshire team

Somerset team
PD Trego, BJ Phillips, AC Thomas, JC Hildreth, JL Langer, ME Trescothick, ML Turner, AV Suppiah, CM Gazzard, Z de Bruyn, OAC Banks

Warwickshire team
AG Botha, WB Rankin, IJ Westwood, CR Woakes, R Clarke, IJL Trott, IR Bell, TR Ambrose, JO Troughton, JS Patel, KHD Barker

So Bell obviously didn't travel to Durham.

Well yes it was, sorry if offence caused, it was a joke about the media hype. Seeing as the mortality rate is similar to that of normal flu, I would have thought it was acceptable.

Surprised both that this one is going ahead (weather forecast) and that no comments have been made about it so far.

Hilders has just been dismissed by Botha, but an overall run rate of more than six at this stage, is surely welcome.

In the circumstances that's probably the best we could hope for, as the side batting first would probably have been stuffed if D/L had been brought into play.

Those of us that made it on time were treated to some fine stroke play, good old fashioned cricket shots and Tractor was more soberly dressed.

Shame but at least Warwicks didnt have chance to close on us.

Nice to see Jones and Caddy bowling pre match.

And, as I suggested might be the case the other day, it's a good thing that Warks beat Middx since Middx will be picking up full points on the same day that we are "held," to one point. So it's a good job they got null points at Edgbaston.

Re: Wet Wet Wet

I'm not 100% sure how much of an advantage a home QF would be?

My fear in home games that start at 10.45 is always that there may be something there for the side bowling first, but that there will almost certainly be NOTHING there for the side bowling second i.e I worry about the toss having a huge influence.

At many away grounds, there is usually an advantage for the side bowling first, and sometimes a big one, but there is often at least something left in the wicket for the side bowling second.

That said, I don't think we want on a QF tie on a ground like Old Trafford where we are almost sure to be at a disadvantage due to the paucity of our spin bowling.

Re: Wet Wet Wet
Posted by: wsm fan (IP Logged)
Date: 14/05/2009 16:10

Well you'd have thought batting first today would have been dodgy given damp overcast conditions etc, however we started like a train, not 1 play and miss in first 10 overs or so.

Home advantage is good because 90% home support and conditions are familiar to us, plus we havent lost at home yet and sure players would prefer it.

That said i believe it will be a Saturday, 23rd and all pay member or not.

Anyway, lets just win the last 3, quailfy and see what we get
