Yorkshire make the long trip to the County Ground for the battle of indifferent Championship "one's to watch". They are having a similar start to ours and would dearly like to break the cycle of declaring on a total that we pass to take the win at Taunton. Alfonso Thomas is in the country but will not play in theis one and Craig Kieswetter is in the nets but not yet match fit....Will Max play? Well it seems early morning rain has put paid to that as well.
Alfonso got here but isn't really yet acclimatised or ready for a four day game. Craig had an early fitness test but is not yet ready himself. Yorkshire have won the toss and will bat.
Well that was all I saw of the game until the Tea interval. Hussain bowled very well in the first session going at 1.75 runs per over and taking two early wickets with Root at 56 and Lyth at 75. In between Pete took McGrath out and we looked good at 109 for 3. However there were ominous signs that the pitch was flattening and becoming less favourable to the ball and so it proved.
After lunch Kirby did get Gale at 138 and then that was it. For the next 37 overs nothing happened except Bairstow and Ballance put on 166 and never looked in the slightest trouble. They went into Tea with Bairstow past 100 with 18 fours to his name and 262 up without further loss. 500 looked distinctly on!
Suddenly, halfway through the 74th over the game changed literally in 3 deliveries. From having little or no problem with any ball and balls hardly passing the bat, Ballance found he as playing and missing at everything Steve Kirby sent his way and he was no where near any of it. The 75th over brought Charl back into the equation and he delivered the centurion clean bowled with a full length ball. He then stuck it on Rashid's boot next ball and Yorkshire found themselves in dissarry at 305 for 6. Ballance tried to hold it together but fell to a beauty from Charl with this rejuvinated old ball at 322 and Sidebottom finaly go an edge to Gemaal after trying really hard at 331.
Shazhad started to pull everything in sight and got the score moving a little but the end was inevitable and once he had finally stepped in front of his stumps once too often Hanon-Dalby was not going to hold up proceedings too long and the Tykes had gone for 358. 6 wickets for 53 runs in less than 10 overs with a ball that started 74 overs old? Great fightback and game on.
Marcus and Arul survived the 4 overs until the close adding only 7.
Even though i have had two consecutive disappointing fridays listening to the commentary of Somersets 4 dayers i will still be attending the Yorkshire game and giving the boys my full support
and drinking cider
will anyone else be there?

Hello all,
Once again I will be with you,and there won't be any silly declarations like the last two seasons. Mind you,you shouldn't need to rely on us declaring;we're having a shocking season(as you
will know). Injuries and the ECB depriving us of players for the Roses match and of course not having an overseas player due to being skint, means we haven't been able to field a full strength team yet this season.
Never mind,I will no doubt meet up with Tractor,Sloop John B and hopefully Big Jim. If memory serves me well,he owes me a pint from 4 seasons ago. (only joking;it will just be good to see you - presumably on Gimletts Hill)
Let battle commence - cheers TykesRUs
Cheers Tykes - don't be down. If you've been reading here we are also fighting relegation with a poorly performing side. Did we go down together last time? It's been a great spectacle over the last two seasons so we can but hope.
There might be a few about the place for the last CC1 before the mid season break for some. See ya there
As far as the CC is concerned, it cannot be said that the season thus far has been any better than average, at best. After all, we have lost more games than we have won.
If it gets conflated with the one-day stuff you get a different overall picture as we are a strong one-day side that wins games consistently.
Personally, I'd swap all the CB40 wins for, say, an extra 20 points in the CC though!!
And if you read further up here you'll see some believe it at this present moment in time.
Not a position I personally as a supporter believe can actually be allowed to go without comment.
In my view it's a ludicrous statement to accept before the halfway stage (I'm not sure the poster who put it up there really took it that seriously yet) but it's not the first one this season as people seem to have left any sense of perspective at the gate on the first day of play - along with the players against Warwickshire.
However, they returned to reality and are working at improving things while some commentators here have just continued to look into the deep dark well of despair from then on.
So going on the tables as a few of us are already thinking the game against Lancs at the end of the season at Taunton will be first against second to take the title
I tend to agree with Mike about the topsy-turvy nature of the CC thus far.
It's also true that we have good players to come back.
Then again, we've not the only ones that have been playing without first-team players.
When we beat Hants at the Rose Bowl, I think they were without as many as five first-team players - Lumb, Carberry, Imran Tahir, Kabir Ali and Djimi Mascharenhas... all five of those guys have, I think?), played international cricket at some stage. So Hants are certainly a team that could really turn their form around when they get players back.
My main thought is that, last year, Notts form basically collapsed over the second half of last season. It's entirely possible that one of Durham, Lancs or Warks could see a similar collapse in form, though it seems unlikely that they would all experience a collapse in form!
My pre-season thought was that Durham should probably be favourites and I still tend to think that that should be the case.
I wonder if there's any chance of a change to the bowling .. possibly with Adam Dibble coming in?
Gemaal Hussain's record so far is not really one that you would like from your first change bowler... he's been expensive in terms of runs per over and his bowling average is 45.
Certainly, one would think that Hussain will, at present, be first in line to make way in the CC side when Alf Thomas returns.
With Meschede apparently bowling well in the seconds, I suppose we could look at keeping him in the XI and using a combination of him and Gregory as second change bowler (with Pete at first change) in which case we could make a change of simply Hildreth for Hussain?
B Rose says Alfie due back in UK today so should be available for selection, also Craig having a fitness test pre match so could be back. Hildy WILL be back from lions.
Kartik having extra break so not due until start of T20 campaign (although only 10 days until that now.
I could not understand - and said so - the suggestion that Alf would be back in the country but not play. It didn't sound like Alf to me at all. I thought Brian would have physcially lock him away somewhere to stop him from playing.
lets hope we have good weather, if craig is back as well as hildy we are looking much stronger.
Also alf will be a big boost. I think him, kirby and charl are a must. Then you can adapt the last place and include;
Max - If there's some spin
Hussain - If the pitch is green
Gregory - if craig doesn't recover and they want to strengthen the batting (although if he plays as a bowler, they have to have faith to give him a few overs).
Also Gregory and Barrow may be after Jos' spot in the batting line up.
Jos looked really nervous in the second innings at Hove. And somebody said that AH had said that 'we need to find a way to translate Jos's one-day form to the CC.'
Well, I really suspect that what Jos needs - if he hasn't been told already - is to be told that he has license to forget altogether about the distinction between one day and four day cricket and just play naturally.
I'm not convinced that a long technical net session (assuming that that is what they will be doing) with Jimmy Cook will necessarily be ideal because I'm not sure that what ails Jos is technical. I think what ails Jos is trying to play an unnatural game.... focusing heavily on crease occupation etc to the detriment of his natural game.
Having said all of that, Jos is averaging only 5 runs fewer than Arul and 6 fewer than James.
Certainly the twitter from Alf yesterday suggested he was on his way and ready for it. I couldn't begin to try and assess where Murali's head willbe after such a limited experience for Pune this year.
If Alf is in that makes it really interesting AND gives us a four day game to assess where he is in terms of form.
Who moves out will be interesting. Will Max play? Will Alex be considered after his decent showing in the Sussex game at number
But whatever we do, we must attack. The reason we lost against Sussex was, as so often in the past, we failed to take 20 wickets. Yes the batting in the second innings was disappointing but even it has been better the bowlers didn't get close enough.
What we won't do is succeed in the CC by filling the team with allrounders. AGod's Hildreth for Hussain idea is exactly wrong. Despite his mixed performances, Gemaal has had hot days this season. We need the four best bowlers we have plus Trego as the allrounder. Hildreth should replace Meschede and Thomas and kartik coming in as ready for Gregory and only then Hussein.
As regards pressure on Buttler, well that's where Alex Barrow is the challenger and he's batted better than Gregory or Meschede. Nothing wrong with bit part players but they must demonstrate the ability to make a mark in at least one discipline rather than just be a number 8.
Mike, thanks for putting in the link to last years CC table at this stage of the season. I was pretty sure that last year Somerset's early CC performance was not even up to Averageside's 'average' performance level - I remembered our losses to Yorks and Notts (I was there) but faintly remembered not much in the 'victories' co;umn until after Murali Kartik arrived. this table goes to prove it - and points out the wide gulf in points between Somerset and table toppers Notts.
Plenty of time to catch up. Front runners often tire in the final furlongs as BJ probably knows to his (financial) cost!
Good point, AGod. Kartik could yet to be there difference for us, though it may need Hussain to match Phillips performance last season that was highly impressive.
Hope Alf does play as I believe we need his pace and variety.
Slightly off topic, but is there any news about George Dockrell? The last I heard, they were hoping to get him fit for the T20 campaign.
"Still under treatment and unlikely to be considered," says the official website, so either that info is incorrect, the previous info about a fitness test was incorrect, or he's already had the fitness test and failed it.
I wasn't happy when it was announced Kartik was having a post-IPL break last year, but then he did so well when he did turn up, that I find myself less concerned about it this time.
Nevertheless, if he is going to be retained for next season as well (I can't remember if he has already signed a contract for next season?) then I think Brian will need to find a locum overseas player that has a proven record of playing in England to cover Kartik's absence.
With hindsight, I think that was the key error with the Mendis signing -- no track record in England. You cannot wait for a new signing to settle in when their entire stint is only going to be four or five games!
No Max in the squad for Yorkshire then. I am a little surprised at this - whether he were to get in the XI or not - but I guess that as we at home, we will know what the wicket will likely do.
I have a nagging suspicion that Marcus, like Justin before him, has a reluctance to include spinners, and prefers a safer left armer who can tie up one end if necessary, to an attacking spinner. I may be wrong of course.
Of course it may also be that whilst Max, and Michael before him are decent leggies, they simply are not good enough for CC1, much as most of us would like them to be (or have been).
Yeah, no doubt we're aiming to produce another greenish track. We seem to be able to produce greenish pitches whenever we want them. More difficult is actually guaranteeing that they "play," green!
Been looking at the Yorkshire forum - on some threads were the names of players/teams 'redacted' would find little difference in comments between the White Rose supporters and our own Grockles!
Interestingly they too spend some time discussing team selection and spinners, but in thei8r case they have certain posters who champiion the 'two spinner' policy.
Therein lies the truth - Yorkshire will certainly be playing one spinner (Rashid) with I think we would all agree has a far superior first class pedigree than any spinner available to Somerset for this match. They have young batsman Joe Root who has bowled a bit of offspin this season, and David Wainwright in the wings should they feel the two spinner option is the way to go.
I think it unlikely that Somerset would be asking for a spin-friendly pitch for this match. Although they could go for the double-bluff; there are some suspicions on the Yorkshire site that the pitch for tomorrow will be well over to the Somerset Stand side of the square, with a 'Trego-friendly' boundary (I kid you not). In which case maybe we want them to play two spinners!
I can’t tell you exactly where the pitch is for tomorrow, all I can say is the sightscreen is dead centre on the Sir Ian Botham stand with almost a equal number of seat showing on each side of the sightscreen.
Judging on the Sussex game it isn't just Max the selectors don't trust - there weren't many overs from the youngsters even in the second innings when the 'so-called' more experienced bowlers weren't doing the business.
Frankly, I don't know where we are going to use Max now in the CC for the rest of the season if the current thinking continues. Presumably as far as the selectors are concerned he is behind Kartik and Dockrell, so unless they fall under a bus, we will never know whether Max has what it takes in CC batting or bowling, until he joins another club.
Yorkshire have announced a squad of 13 on their official website.
Opener Joe Sayers is out with a bruised foot sustained in the Roses match but Anthony McGrath returns from injury having played in a 2nds match last week. Shazad and Bairstow are back from Lions duty. Locum keeper Simon Guy goes back to his day job and Brophy isn't fit.
Commentary team for this game (access via the picture of KARTIK at the top of the messageboard). After Tea Grockles comments will be answered once I've arrived - last minute dash time as all four days are in the working week.
Day One
Session 1 - Bill Luckett/Dick Macey
Session 2 - Julian Cattenach /Paul Harper
Session 3 - Paul Bird/John Hamlin
Day Two
Session 1 - Eric Cole/Ben Manning
Session 2 - Chris Stone/Paul Harper
Session 3 - Paul Bird/Roy Kerslake
Day Three
Session 1 - John Hamlin/Paul Harper
Session 2 - Eric Cole/Richard Oliver
Session 3 - Paul Bird/Julian Cattenach
Day Four
Session 1 - Richard Oliver/Barry Allaway
Session 2 - Paul Harper/Eric Cole
Session 3 - Paul Bird/Roy Kerslake
Is it my imagination, Grockle, or is the roster of commentators growing? There's a lot of names listed there and I don't think I am familiar with some of them.
They did and will bat, according to cricinfo. Looks like Marcus's luck with the toss has run out the last couple of games.
Hopefully this toss will be rather less significant that the one at Hove. M H Yardy walked towards me a with a gleeful look on his face after winning the toss at Hove. I'm not sure that Andrew Gale will be quite so cock-a-hoop at winning the toss today?
Indeed, if it's one of those Taunton pitches that looks really green, then Marcus may consider it a good toss to have lost, and we can never really be sure how these green tracks will play.
I think Mike mentioned rain yesterday, so that might have given a bit of extra spice to whatever we have prepared?
Will pass the message on to the Mighty Walsh and Mr Wolf and see what they can do if they are at the ground.
Forgot to mention that some reprobates stole the commentary kit from the box during the break in games and they will be using "new"(not of the brand spanking variety I'm afraid) and possibly unfamiliar gear so you may have to bear with them for today.
There are a couple of new names on the list I think AG - certainly "B Manning" caught my eye when I firt saw it without the full first name. But mostly they have been on before.
I'm prepared for my usual severe investigation of field placings during my sessions with the Mighty Mr Kerslake :-)

Someone has emailed the Yorkie commentators with a little concern that by batting first Yorkshire may just be tempted to set Somerset a target to chase in the 4th innings and Trego will, well, you know the rest!!
Joe Sayers guest commentator suggesting that Kirbs has mellowed. Hmmm.
Well, probably already at the point where we could use a breakthrough. With the exception of Northants being all over Leics, not a lot of joy for bowling sides around the country, thus far.
Hear what you're saying, ronnie Actually, I'd say AG was right - we could do with a wicket at that point - and got one!
Would I be right in guessing that opposing openers have had quite a few good partnerships against us this season, and that first breakthroughs have tended to come after 15-25 overs? Anyone out there with more time or less work to do than me able to look that up?
I think you are right SP but thats from the top of my head. I think our bowlers are slightly better with a ball which is a little older. Dont know why that is though!!!
I think that's been something of a feature of our season so far, for whatever reason.
Ironically, in the first four games or so the only really early wicket I remember was that of a Warks opener -- and we all know how that innings turned out!!
These commentators are true professionals aren't they!?
They don't seem to get AT ALL excited when a wicket falls.
They've just described what sounds like a brilliant piece of fielding by James to remove a batsman who sounded like he was flying and not a trace of excitement!
Lancs would have expected to lose Jimmy Anderson but they have also lost Maharoof who has been called up into Sri Lanka's Test squad - not sure if he's there to stay or just as cover in case Fernando proves unfit for Cardiff. Chapple still out too though Tom Smith returns from injury as does Newby.
The scorecard from the Rose Bowl will bring some cheer to the Yorkies anyway.
Well, in a bit early and not too bad it seems. If bowling on day 1 my rough and ready rule of thumb is 100 for 3 at lunch;240 for 6 at tea and 330 all out at close. These are my markers for assessment.
If we are batting then I go 110 for 3 at lunch 260 for 5 at tea and 365 for 8 at close.
No scientific basis but a marker for judgement.
Unless it changes very quickly, our lack of ambition in attack, will find us out again. Not sure who chose the bowlers for tobay? BR and Andy persumably. With another spinner today, it might have been no better, BUT we will never know.
It all sounds, bowling wise rather similar to how it looked against Sussex in their second innings.. that is, rather impotent.
We should hope that this is one of those Taunton tracks that just gets flatter and flatter because the Yorks attack looks pretty good to me with Sidebottom, Shahzad and Rashid.
Ronnie, I fear you misunderstand me (and accept this may be my fault). I don't mind the "we've bowled poorly today - should have picked a spinner"-type comment.
I do not like (but people are entirely within their rights to write) comments like "We haven't taken a wicket in the last half an hour. Therefore we picked the wrong team / they're not trying / we're rubbish again this year / we're gonna get relegated for sure"-type comment.
(Tho' something like "jeez...........they have scored 150 in this session with only 1 out. In only about 34 overs too. One day stuff!!! Are we as bad as it appears?" is closer to the second category than the first!)
Well, SP, if we've bowled poorly this afternoon - and it certainly has not sounded as though we've bowled particularly well - I'm hoping it's frustration -- trying to experiment too much etc - on a pitch that has flattened out more quickly than we had hoped.
The commentators have been mentioning "frustrated body language," so hopefully that's more about the pitch and the amount of help it is now offering, than anything else.
It did sound as though it jagged around off the pitch a fair bit before lunch.
A high-scoring draw from this match would certainly not be the end of the world and I'm starting to wonder if this is that type of Taunton track...
I saw this morning's play but couldn't get down after lunch. Seems as though if it carries on at this rate, we could be facing 400+ by the close for very few wickets down. I'm sure that like me, you hope I'm wrong, but memories of the first two matches keep flooding back.
Thats just it SP, no-one shouldn't have to post what they want to just cos you don't like it. I certainly don't and will continue to post what I like probably just to spite you more than anything else now!! It isn't all about you although I think you and others too seem to think it is.
My last post contained at least 2 questions and 2 facts. I personally dont think it is closer to "your" second category but there you go you know much better than me it seems.
Ronnie: that's totally un-called-for. I've never given any indication that I think "it's all about me", or that others can't post stuff I don't like! And I don't think I know better than you - I've never indicated that at all, of you or anybody else.
I'll say it again: as far as I'm concerned, YOU CAN POST WHAT YOU LIKE!!!
By the same token, I'll say if I don't agree or think you (or anybody else) is over-reacting. That's all - nothing personal. If you post on here out of "spite", well I'm sorry I think that's sad. BUT YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO DO IT WHICH I'M NOT DENYING.
On the bowling stats alone why are the two tightest bowlers Suppiah and Gregory not bowling more? Question to the skipper I suppose. Unfortunately from being our banker bowler Pete seems to become the fall guy today.
I do not like (but people are entirely within their rights to write) comments like "We haven't taken a wicket in the last half an hour. Therefore we picked the wrong team / they're not trying / we're rubbish again this year / we're gonna get relegated for sure"-type comment.
People are most certainly within their rights to post comments like that SheptonPaul, and many such comments would be justified on occasions.
Some people, on the other hand, take the line that everything that is done (both on and off the field) in the name of Somerset CCC is wonderful, and the players can seemingly certainly do no wrong in their eyes - in whatever way they happen to be monitoring Somerset's progress.
I don't view the game through rose - coloured spectacles. I call it as I see it, and I hope that Ronnie and other like - minded folk continue to do likewise.
Not only have I paid a membership fee to the club for well over 50 years, but I attend games fairly regularly and I have seen, many times before, performances such as we have witnessed in the CC this season. We have not won the County Championship since we were first admitted into it in 1891, when there were only 9 First Class Counties, and we won't win it this year with of course 18 Counties.
We are simply not up to it.
Why? Thereby hangs another question.
Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 2011:05:24:16:49:37 by Clarence Parker.
Been amusing myself reading the yorkshire forum where they are generally more cheerful than lunchtime and thinking maybe set us 800 to chase o tne final day.
Bizarre fact (as nicked from an observant Yorkshire forum poster) - the two umpires, together, are a fielding position (think about it . . . !)
Joe Sayers impressed by how Willo worked out Bairstow.
Clarence - you were addressing the wrong person in your post of 16.46.
My suggestion about the overall debate that was going on (this is not a response to your post, Clarence) would be that folks give their opinions on the cricket and that other folks then debate the substance of those opinions, rather than moaning about the tenor of those opinions.
For example when Clarence says "We're not going to do it this year," perhaps any folks that violently disagree would like to make out a case as to why they think we WILL do it this year, rather than just complaining about a "negative," post.
But I'm also all for free speech and folks are entirely free to say whatever they wish.
Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 2011:05:24:16:54:33 by AGod.
CP, without us the self proclaimed non moaners would have nothing to moan about!!
To put things right you have to identify what is wrong first, it just doesn't happen. I happen to think thats a better way of the way I look (and probably yourself) look at it.
Cricket is a funny game though and can change very quickly!!!
I think CP's 16.46 post shpuld be hung in the SCCC dressing room.
Hopefully it would provide the motivation to show us all that we are good enough.
I tend to the view that we are more than capable of it, but only if we put performances together with the degree of consistency that we are presently struggling to find.
Grizzly.. I think that's the beauty of Div One nowadays.
With the possible exception of last year when Notts rather collapsed down the stretch (and we were not quite able to overtake them because we did not win until game six!) it is generally the case that a team has to play consistently very well over the course of a season to win CC1. Certainly, I think that's what Durham had done over the past couple of seasons.
At the moment, as you say, not sure that we're quite there in terms of the consistency, though we remain below full strength, of course.
Well, we're not the only ones to have suffered depletions of one kind or another. Although I believe we are the only team to have lost TWO guys to the IPL?
However, some other teams - notably Hants and Durham have been suffering with a quite a few injuries.
To win the Championship, we will surely have to exhibit consistency, such as that we produce in the CB40 & which overcomes the same injury/absence/weather issues that affect every other team.
At the moment,in the Championshiop, we appear to be exhibiting collective "Lathwellesque" (sorry !) tendencies, i.e. you never know which SCCC will turn up.
Another way might be to think that we are currently a fairly middling CC team ..... and we got hammered by teams that have (thus far) wound up towards the top - Lancs and Warks, and we beat the low-confidence teams at the bottom, Hants and Worcs, that have not won a game.... results that are consistent with a middling team.
Although that's a middling team without the two IPL guys....
Would like to say an inspired move by the skipper to throw the ball to Willo with only 8 overs to go to the new ball - the more obvious move would have been to leave him grazing on the Gimlett boundary until the 81st over.
" [i]If bowling on day 1 my rough and ready rule of thumb is 100 for 3 at lunch;240 for 6 at tea and 330 all out at close. These are my markers for assessment.
If we are batting then I go 110 for 3 at lunch 260 for 5 at tea and 365 for 8 at close.
No scientific basis but a marker for judgement."[/i
]On that basis I wasn't far out at lunch but went a bit downhill after that. I would still hope for several maidens and then 2 wickets so that we have no time to bat.
Out first ball in first innings (though it was lbw so can assume he was somewhere near the stumps!) lasted 43 balls in the second innings for 6*.
But - only bowled 13 out of 115 overs and was wicketless in Lancashire's first innings, and deemed unlikely enough to get a wicket or slow the scoring rate to get a bowl at all in the second innings.
Perhaps they should have played the extra batsman?
4 overs - got past number 1. Pulled this one back quite well and I can't for the life of me tell you why the ball suddenly decided to be difficult after the 76th over.
The same three men were suddenly in the Yorkies faces after looking innocuous for 37 overs!
Sorry, have spent the afternoon traveling from Somerset to Yorkshire (couldn't make it up) - when I set off we were 138/4 and I put push notifications on my iphone ECB app expecting many happy buzzes as I drove up the country. It wasn't still I was passing over Sheffield that it finally went off. Somewhat frustrating afternoon! Shall see how they report the game on the news in a bit up t'here
Could just be two well set batsmen with one going like a train ? Sometimes you just have to get through the storm and see what's on the other side sometimes ?
1. Day One/Innings one is almost always too soon to make a definitive judgement of the quality of a performance or the value of a total. We'll know far more about how good (or otherwise) today has been by this time tomorrow.
BUT
2. I think that many of us, had we been offered 358 all out after Yorks won the toss and chose to bat, would have taken it. At 70-odd for three we would have hoped for more, but perhaps the truth is that at that point we had over-performed.
AND
3. I have certainly never said that "everything that is done (both on and off the field) in the name of Somerset CCC is wonderful", and it is certainly not true that "the players can seemingly certainly do no wrong in my eyes". I have been critical of any number of management decisions over the years (the signing of Bryant, the release of Matt Wood, etc etc.), and am more than happy to say that any given performance is not good enough. What I won't say during an ongoing campaign is that any given player isn't fundamentally good enough. And what I will not accept, at any time, is that anything "done (both on and off the field) in the name of Somerset CCC" is done in anything other than good faith, and with the (believed) best interests of SCCC at heart, or that any of the players are not giving of the best that they are capable of at any given time. If I genuinely believed that anyone were simply not trying, or that anyone were actively working against the interests of the club, then there would be no point (for me at least) in continuing to support the Club.
I'm not quoting CP in order to suggest that he is directly suggesting such things, but there often seems to be an under-current from a number of posters which intimates this.
I have no problem with negative comments per se, (although when a failure to take a wicket after ten overs illicits "really need a breakthrough" type comments, I do feel that they are somewhat over-reactive) but I do have a problem with what I interpret as attacks on players' or officials' motivations or character.

A pretty good day, I'd say - from 280-odd for 4 to 350-odd all out (largely with the old ball from what I read on here) is excellent work by all concerned. 350 from the opposition at Taunton over the last decade would, I think, have been seen as good from a Somerset point of view, so I'm content...and also with no wickets down at close.
I am interested (tho not in an overly-anorak way) in our general lack of wickets taken in the first 10-15 overs of most innings (home and away?), with wickets tending to come later (often by the same bowlers who opened the bowling. Were Mr FE so inclined (and I quite understand why he wouldn't be), a graph plotting wickets taken in each ten-over period of our oppositions' innings would be most illuminating.
I'll be following on my mobile from work meetings all day tomorrow, so ronnie and I should be able to avoid falling out with each other but as long as we pass 360 with plenty of wickets in hand, I don't suppose either of us will feel our day totally wasted.
As you will have noticed I tend to take the longer view which quite often avoids capricious ups and downs I wonder what our reaction would have been if it had been Somerset who had gone from 305 for 4 to 358 for 10?
I will take bowling a side out on the first day at Taunton. (although I agree with FE that we will know more about the overall merits of this at COP tomorrow)
I guess I am one of the more optimistic supporters and generally look at our good points, because having been a supporter for the best part of three decades, I can honestly say that the future looks rosey. (pardon the pun)
With our returning players joining a talented bunch of established stars and a crop of young players that every county in the land will be envious of, these are good times.
With the rare exception of 2001,fleeting glimpses of promise in the early 90's and the odd semi-final here and there, I remember too many barren years and seasons were we were expected to finish bottom and be uncompetitive. This cannot be levelled at us since 2007 and despite a shaky start to the Championship, I still feel we are in with a shout.
Well I'd say a good day in the end after losing the toss, and after listening to most of the days play, I finally went out for a run at 300-4 come home we are 7-0 and they we all out for 358, perhaps I should just go out for a run all day tomorrow
Good for you, Norwich and geordie, optimists of the world unite. WaresWurzel, do you think your runs bring good news for Somerset, or wickets for whoever's bowling? If the latter, I hope you don't have to resume your marathon training till at least Thursday tea-time. (Sorry, BJ, I know that's a bit pessimistic for you!)
Well after the first innings may be the time to judge our performance today although conditions may, of course, change tomorrow. For example if the ball swings around corners tomorrow and we get bundled out for 150 that would mean we would be in a bad position in the match but would not necessarily mean that we'd bowled badly today.
Equally if pitch is as flat as a pancake tomorrow and we total 500 in our first innings that does not automatically mean we bowled well today.
I'm going to have a look see what Rose/Hurry have officially said about today..
Well SP I was thinking good news for Somerset, but now you have me thinking it could be the wickets which would mean I dont have to run all day tomorrow ......
I dont know if its just a cricket thing but I do find myself being a bit superstitious with these things....I even have Mrs WaresWurzel wearing the same cricket shirt every time we play in one day cricket this season (washed of course) as we have not lost while she has worn it.....

I couldn't agree more my exiled friend from Frome, it would appear that some supporters of this fine county of ours have ulterior motives......not saying there are any on here of course, but I am aware that some campers use the freedom the interweb allows to start their crusades against certain individuals.
Super injunctions, that's what we need.
Buxom Welsh Z list celebrities and super injunctions.
Nothing from club officials so we'll have to go with Steve Kirby who says he thinks they have a par score on a good cricket wicket with something in it for bat and ball.
He's also tempted fate by opining that 'We have a stronger batting line-up than Yorks.'
Kirby also notes that we've not been getting enough out of the ball early in innings this season, as many of us had noted.
It's levels you devils in my opinion, though I have to hold my hand up and say, isn't the Bairstow boy a gem?
I'd love to see him go right to the top, what a talent.
In the interests of balance I also went to have a look at the Yorkshire site. No comment, as yet, from any of their officials as to what kind of total they feel they have.
There is a long, rather strange, report on their official site. It goes into considerable detail about the first part of the day and then merely summarises the second part of the day. I assume that's because they have not yet had time to put up the more detailed version of the second half.
Anyway, the comments on that site about our bowling were;
"Lyth feasted on some over-pitched bowling early on."
and
"Hussain caused considerable problems by moving the ball both ways."
I haven’t read any of the post apart from this page.
My views are the first morning session went slightly to Somerset with three wickets, afternoon went Yorkshire’s way, after tea definitely went to Somerset.
At the end of the day I am happier with Somerset’s position.
Surprised nobody has commented so far on the Curate`s Egg nature of Bairstow`s innings.
There were 10 boundaries in his first 50 runs, but it would be no exaggeration to describe at least six of them as streaky, on another day bringing a rapid return to the pavilion.
Yet his next 15 fours, taking him up to 136, were impressive in the extreme, especially through the covers, with not a single dodgy effort among them. He seemed to have a particular liking for Trigger`s rather mixed grill bowling.
Well, it appears to have been a very watchable at Taunton today and full credit must go, again, to Brian Rose and the ground staff for producing another good wicket for cricket.
Honours even I would guess. Tremendous fightback from the lads and let's hope we knuckle down well tomorrow.
Last season we chased 400 odd in the same fixture and ended up with 377.
I had an enjoyable day at Taunton today. Highlights for me (apart from catching up with some co-contributors) were Hussain's bowling, particularly in the morning when he beat the bat on a number of occasions; Kirby's whole-hearted - and effective - bowling; Willo getting the ball to reverse after tea, which precipitated a rush of wickets; neat wicket-keeping by Buttler (I recall him fumbling only one ball throughout the day - and he held five catches); a great catch by Hildreth at first slip; and a fine innings by Bairstow - I agree with BJ' comments about him.
Incidentally, when walking through Taunton, it did strike me as rather remarkable that this small provincial town is home to one of the very best teams in the country.
Interesting day.
Great comeback from 300-4.
First half hour after lunch we were tad unlucky but after that i thought our bowling was pretty ordinary.
I'm a fan of Trego but worst i've seen him bowl i think, Bairstow seemed to hit him every other ball.
But Charl's spell after tea asked big questions and we polished them off really really well then.
Big big batting day tomorrow, so much potential with Gregory at 8, who we're told is going to be our future number 4 batter. If they can all dig in and contribute we could put ourselves in a great position...
A few impressions from today as I watched the debate unfold and the cricket that created it.
Some posters came looking for a forum fight today and yesterday it seems.
"Grockles" puts forward no excuse for being a Somerset supporter's site and has no reason to attempt to justify it's general postive view of the cricket the county plays. I'm slightly dumfounded that some people are surprised that this would be a prevalent attitude here.
Negativity is not censored here however as the minority aspect of the site's traffic it may find it has a case to answer from other posters that it would not have to answer if the comments were posted on. for example a Gloucestershire site (if there was one).
Those that feel that this is sometimes unfair have every right to post that opinion or go somewhere that they feel deals with their paticular views in a way more to their tastes. There is no need to ask for refunds, or work out any kind of notice or cancel subscriptions. There is no pressure to post here and there is a whole list of alternative fora being advertised presently on the soon to be defunct 606. As you are most welcome here, I'm sure you would be most welcome there.
Sometimes debate here generates heat and it is for the people involved to deal with that. It may mean walking away sometimes but once the insults start to fly the debate is over and the person who starts the move down that route is the loser and is usually accepted as such by the reading public.
However the place wouldn't be what it is without some friction and we should celebrate the fact that we don't all walk the same path though we may want the same result (at least the majority of us seem to).
Vive la difference etc etc :p)

Sorry for the delay trouble with 'imageshack' it seems to have sorted it self out now.
1st day’s photos.
It looks like Yorkshire also have a number eleven batsman in O Hannon-Dalby who doesn’t like being hit by the ball, I can’t say I blame him.
J Bairstow was lucky when he had an inside edge off Steve Kirby the ball passed between pads and stumps.
G Ballance caught Jos Buttler bowl Charl Willoughby.
The question we all like to know why the ball suddenly starts to act differently, just before the new ball was due about the 76th over Steve Kirby beat the bat of G Balance like this three times in one over, the new was not taken until the 83rd over because of it.
G Balance living up to his name (Well off Balance) when G Hussain hit him on the back boot unfortunately outside leg stump.
Pete Trego did get hit for a few runs today but I thought it was more to do with the pace of the pitch than Pete’s bowling, he was too good for A McGrath who got an inside edge and was caught behind by Jos Buttler.
Yes, well said Grockle. I'm sure I've never come on here looking for a fight and indeed have never had one until the last few days. Maybe 400 for very few will make tomorrow a better day.
I didn't think the pitch was slow - there was good carry for the quicker bowlers, albeit that a couple of edges fell just short of the slips. I think that there were a few occasions when PT (who I think is at his best when given licence to bowl an attacking line and length) pitched the ball up looking for swing - but when (as was the case for much of the day) there was little or no swing, these balls became straight half-volleys.
This is where this forum comes into it’s own with different opinions, if anything I would say the pitch was variable.
I was sitting with Jos Buttlers father up until tea time and he pointed out in the first few overs that Jos was taking the ball down by his ankles, where I would agree with ‘Wickham’ other times during the day it did carry through quite high to the wicketkeeper.
It was't me talking about the pitch being slow AG.
Bounce was variable even with the new ball but some dlieveries fair fizzed through - especially one from WIlloughby that hit the bottom of Ballance's (I think) bat and didn't bounce at all as it shot through Jos to the Botham boundary
Joss's father must have been proud of him yesterday. An almost perfect day for the lad - all he wants now is for Joss to confirm him tremendous potential with a good knock today!
On the so-called glass half-full vs half-empty debate.
One thing I’ve noticed from the self-proclaimed glass half-full brigade is that those of us who are deemed “negative,” are not infrequently told (and I paraphrase here) “Just think yourselves lucky it’s not as it was quite recently (a reference, I think, to 2005 and 2006 in particular,) and some of the older members sometimes tell us “you wouldn’t have survived the 50s.”
This, to me, indicates something of a paradox where the so-called glass half-empty brigade sometimes actually have higher expectations (and are therefore, perhaps, more easily displeased) than the glass half-full crowd.
They say that death and taxes are the only certainties in life. I think, to this list of certainties, we can add this;
When the players came off the field after a double-dose of daft batting against Warks in game one of this season, Brian Rose did not greet them with a talk along the lines of “Never mind lads, in 2005, this would have counted as a good performance,” or “fans were used to this in the 1950s, so nevermind.”
Indeed, if Brian had taken over and surveyed SCCC’s Championship history and taken that history as a guide as to what we should expect and be happy with, I would venture to suggest that he would probably have focused on one-day cricket (as John Bracewell once did up the road) and that we would still be playing some urine poor stuff in Div Two of the CC.
I’m sure we’re all very, very grateful that Brian did not take that tack.
The point is that we have set very high standards for ourselves last season.. and pretty darn good ones for a couple of seasons before that. And it’s inevitable that a certain amount of expectation will, thus, be generated.
My issue here is the patronising tone used by many on the board which is just arrogance in the extreme. They all make out themselves as half fullers..I have a different view of that.
I myself am quite willing to take on board any comment made by anyone and anyone who says different doesn't know me.
I also don't see what is wrong with the comments like " we need a wicket here, or hope Jos can stay in" or whatever it is. Its different peoples way of dealing with the day unfolding. We can all accommodate each other Im sure and theres a place for all types of comment here, which I think needs to be accepted.
Leading on from Grockles statement for which I agree wholeheartedly....I live in Edinburgh and apart from one working visit to Taunton and a quick "unofficial" look around the ground have never seen Somerset play (in the flesh so to speak). I'm appreciative of all your views and opinions as it gives me a better insight and also makes me feel part of the team that I have adopted and supported for a number of years now. I'll apologize if some of my posts seem strange, however they are given with the best intention and not meant to be derogatory or detrimental. They are given to stimulate reaction and create conversation from those in the know and who care. If the county were to win the championship I would hope to make the long trip South to join in any celebration as you would
And there is cricket going n as well!! The fun never stops in the sumer does it?
Marcus and Arul having a pretty stormy time but showing that Somerser backbone and getting the job done this morning against aggressive and pretty effective bowling from Sidebottom, Patterson and Shazhad. 56 runs in first hour off 16 or so overs this morning.
Arul also had a stormy time to negotiate, particularly against Amjad Khan, at Hove... and he showed tremendous resolve down there, as did Alex Barrow, later in the piece.
This is the beauty of Div One... other than when tracks go hopelessly flat, there are very seldom any easy runs about, because there are many good, aggressive bowling units. I love CC1 cricket.
To edinburghbil - Yes, I was at the Grange a couple of years ago to see Tres score 100+ in next to no time. Cox was out in the middle playing a supporting role. There were a number of guys up from the South West having, or had had a good time!
Sky TV has been a godsend...I always make a point to watch all Somerset games which my Scottish non cricket supporting mates find strange.
Do you have an Edinburgh / Scottish connection? I assume yes from your signature
BOF - are you enjoying the increase in bowling from that tatooed one this season? He's made some great breakthroughs, even if they haven't then always gone on to win the games.
I've spent about the past three years moaning about the fact that Pete was not bowled more frequently, so I'm very pleased to see that has changed.
Having said that there will be fewer overs for all the seamers once Kartik is back.
Even if he takes no further wickets in this match, Steve Kirby is on pace to take 65+ wickets for the season which would be one of the higher totals ever recorded in Div One. I don't think he will quite get there, but that's because Kartik will be doing a lot of bowling AND (I assume) we will be preparing pitches deliberately to suit Kartik, not pace. But a terrific haul over the first seven games.
I was in the pub at lunch. I was unaware the sky sports show morning highlights from some Div One games on their sports news station.
Anyway - this bloke, Myburgh, of Hants, played what must have been one of the very worst shots (or rather non-shots) of all time.
If I was being charitable, I would say the ball pitched middle and off and hit middle. But, frankly, it may have pitched middle and hit middle. Perhaps he was trying to leave it on height but it was not a short ball and unless this particular Rose Bowl pitch was uncharacteristically bouncy then I cannot see how on earth he thought he could leave it...... it was the kind of thing that would drive one mad if supporting his team!
Also, their reporter based at Edgbaston claimed that IDB had said, overnight, that "my mouth is watering at the prospect of facing this guy, Metters." Metters is a spinner for Warks who had, I think, a successful debut in his first game.
Don't know if IDB really said that but sounds very presumptous if so. They also showed IDB nearly being caught off this bowler. Nevertheless, I assume Warks may have overcompensated for the unfit pitch because IDB and Durham are absolutely screwing them into the ground.
If we play well enough (with our full team) to put ourselves in CC contention in the second half, I still suspect Durham may be our strongest rivals.
So we are supposed to "allow" without comment, your right to be negative?
Doesn't that impinge on our right to be positive?
Honestly, this is all giving me such a headache, I think I should probably never have come out of hibernation!
If so, what I would say is that I just say what I think based on what I've heard/read/seen as the case may be. Sometimes it will be "positive," and sometimes it will be deemed to be "negative." I don't think any posters have problems with their actual views/opinions being debated.
What I would say (just my personal view) is that it's better to counter the opinion with a so-called "positive," counter-argument, rather than simply moan about a comment being "negative."
I don't know when they get Imran Tahir back? But it cannot be soon enough for them. Not that he would help much with batting, but at least they would usually be responding to lower totals.
Not listening yet.. could not at beginning of day's play and so not going to tune in until a wicket falls as don't want to hex having got back to find already 80/0.
For those that are listening.... does batting still sound challenging as Grockle intimated it was earlier? Or does it sound easier?
If still chanllenging this looks a remarkably good effort. The Yorks bowlers are not exactly chopped liver, after all!
Better news still is that the forecast for tomorrow has improved dramatically.. the heavy rain that had been forecast is now supposed to blow though overnight instead.
Just got into my hotel and pleased to see the score! When I left Bradford we were going steadily, did we have an hour of carnage or something as the score seemed to rocket after the boss got his ton.
Good day. Let's put it into perspective. Yorkshire bowlers Sidebottom- a good pedigree; Shazad- up and coming and good potential; Rashid - in the front rank of English spinners.
389 for 6 against that attack. Excellent
Appears like one of those wickets you're never in on until you've been out there an hour.A lead of around 100-120 should hopefully be enough to force a result.Great knocks from skippy,Arul and Hildy holding it together towards the end.
If we can still be batting at lunch tomorrow it should establish a useful lead. A lot rests on Hilda to generate the bulk of the runs though.
It sounds like a pitch were wickets are falling in clusters but large partnerships can be built. It would be useful if our bowlers can get early wickets in their second knock and have them effectively 3 or 4 down before any deficit has been knocked off but it is set up for an interesting day tomorrow.
Marcus really pleased with the batting today and overall position. He was displeased with yesterday's bowling though, noting "we did not bowl at all well," and saying that we were lucky.
Going to be a big test for Lewis Gregory tomorrow morning... might be heavy rain overnight, apparently, so pitch might sweat under the covers a bit.. in which case batting might be really tricky but then again might not be that bad of a thing, actually, if we got bundled out quite quickly? (I'd like the extra batting point first, though!) The thinking being we'd be bowling at them with maybe still some moisture around.
I think Roy Kerslake said to Grockle that the ball had not appeared to swing much today? Marcus feels that it did swing around. Might not have been the Grockle/Kerslake tandem - might have been the one before.
Good day against a good attack. If Hildy, Lewis and one or two others can get a good few more tomorrow, we should be in a good position. Glad the day's cricket went better than my day's meetings!
For most of the day my photos consisted of shots being played that is what I was hoping for with Somerset batting.
James Hildreth running the ball off the face of the bat for 4 runs.
I have been waiting to see some of the younger players stay at the crease for a while, this evening we started to see what Lewis Gregory can do, and this shot gave him four runs. We need him to stay with James Hildreth for a while tomorrow.
Marcus played another great innings today, he hit this six over a fielders head and all he could do was watch it go high up into his Marcus’s own stand.
All good innings must come to an end as Marcus Trescothick’s did when A Lyth caught him off R Sidebottom.
Peter Trego trapped lbw by R Sidebottom.
We need to get as much of a lead as possible tomorrow.
The big swinger this afternoon was Patterson who got the ball to go both in and out. Sidebottom got a very little bit but he was firing it in at yorker length for over after over up until about three from the end.
If Rashid is in the forefront of English spinners then I can only hope that Swann plays until he's 50 or so because he was entirely unimpressive today. He did get wickets, the only ones comeing from injudiciously placed shots where half volleys were driven to fielders.
Good performance on a good competitive day of cricket and some promising faith shown at the end when Hildreth took a single (the Yorkshire were very clearly allowing him) off the first ball of the last over bowled by Rashid. This allowed Lewis to face the spinner - brought on for the purpose for the last 6 balls - and take him for 2 fours off the 5 balls faced.
What a great innings from the skipper.
I'm not sure we all sometimes realise how lucky we are to have such a special player, he's often taken for granted as we are just used to what he does.
Great position after Yorks were 305-4 after tea yesterday.
Can't say i've huge expectations for many more runs tomorrow but if we could get a 80-100 lead then really need to get amongst them early.
Lets hope the weather doesnt hurt us too much...
Very enjoyable cricket last 2 days, highlight being the skipper's ton today.
Some excellent bowling from Yorkshire after tea has put the game in the balance. My guess is that like the game against Worcs the pitch will give assistance to the bowlers on all 4 days.
Lets hope Hildy and Lewis can give us a decent lead tomorrow morning.
I agree with your analysis over the Tykes bowling. Also, although his bowling analysis don't show it, I felt that over the whole day Hannan-Dalby posed the biggest threat. His figures were spoilt by a couple of big sixes from Marcus into his OWN stand!
As far as Rashid's bowling, I really can't see him filling England's need for a spinner, although perhaps this time he was intimidated by Marcus taking on anything slightly short a length.
Yep forgot to mention the double barreller OB - such a strange way of carrying the ball to the crease but was much more effective than reports suggested he was in the Roses game.
It's been a very good game to watch.
Also forgot to thank Bagpuss very much for saving my life today - much appreciated ma'am.
The "Kerslake and Bird" show is on all week after 4 so get your comments together for then
Also we are now being asked to summarise games for the BBC Bristol drive show at about 5:20 as they have no-one at the game so listen out for those if you are on your way home.
Roy did the one on Tuesday. Wifi cockups stopped it happening today but we should be on to do the Thursday one as well.
Also hope the weather does not intervene in another excellent game between the two protagonists.
I agree with wsm fan about MT - we won't see his like again. He played a masterful, and very responsible, innings today - batting was never easy, but he made sure that he put his team into a good position.
Arul's innings was also very valuable - he batted grittily until he reached his half-century and then played fluently until unluckily picking out mid-wicket when trying to despatch a rank long-hop over the boundary.
Compton looked disgruntled about being given out caught behind; and, from where I was sitting on Gimblett's Hill, Trego might have had cause for looking disgruntled (but commendably walked of quickly) when given out LBW.
Fittingly, the Emperor batted imperiously to ensure that we overtook Yorkshire's total.
I thought that Sidebottom and Shahzad bowled well with the first new ball; and Patterson bowled well later. There was a bit of a stalemate for a time in the afternoon, when the Yorkshire bowlers bowled well outside off stump and the batsmen (understandably) left the ball; but otherwise it was an absorbing day.
Rashid's bowling was disappointing - far too many rank long-hops, even for a leg spinner. However, he did claim Barrow caught behind with a good ball.
The fielder who caught the eye was Sidebottom, who fielded on the boundary with surprising athleticism.
Arul did some decent therapy for his own batting today as well.
He scratched about and worked very hard up to about 50 but then started to get into a groove and was unlucky not to get his ton. He could have hit the ball he got out to anywhere on that side and picked out the fielder.
Pete was a big psychological wicket for them today and will be again in the second dig.
So I was right then, Preb?
I didn't hear any commentary, but from Mike's picture the only way that ball would have hit the stumps would be if the timber was about six feet tall.
The Umpires owe us one.........not right, not right I tell you, the Yorkshire boys are so scared of him they've dropped the men in coats a few loaded brown envelopes.
Stuffed into leather jackets.
His problem appears to have been that he hasn't got a stride in, the ball was obviously of a decent length....but even still.......they're running scared.
We are fortunate indeed, and he must be chuffed as old boots, especially after the first couple of Championship games when some (ashamed to say myself included) began to have doubts.
So, well done Marcus, well done Arul & James & let's get a thumping lead tomorrow.
It has just started raining lightly here in BS31.The forecast is for light rain and showers until mid afternoon, with similar prediction for TA1.
If this is the case I would expect we could get around 40 overs after tea assuming the light is good enough. The outfield will be extensively covered and with Blotto being put to use regularly so cannot see any delay once the rain stops.
Uncle m - was there much in the way of overnight rain? I thought some pretty sharp overnight stuff had been forecast for Taunton.
National forecast is;
"Don't really know," which is to say that showers, some heavy and thundery, could erupt "anywhere," and there does not appear to be any regional breakdown of that at all!!
---------------------------
Now, let's suppose we are fortunate enough to get dodge the showers and get a fair amount of play;
IF batting becomes difficult under heavily overcast conditions, is there merit in trying to struggle on beyond 400 (final batting bonus point)? Or would we better served declaring and trying to get among them whilst there is help from the overhead conditions.
Tumbles Quality as ever, Mike. Out of curiosity from a fellow camera geek, what kit are you using?
Sorry for the delay in replying I have only just read your post.
I use a Nikon D300 camera it is at the lower end of the professional camera range, I even know a professional cameraman that uses the same model.
The lens I think is more important than the camera it is no use having a good camera with a cheep lens, always buy the best you can afford.
I would like a faster lens but the Nikon 80-400 f4.5–5.6 VR ED lens that I have is the best I can afford.
Sitting up high looking across to the county ground at the moment, it's very wet and dark and unpleasant out there. Not raining right this second in town, but has been on and off all morning and I can't see play starting on time in the slightest.
It is clearly building up to a neat scenario where Gale (not knowing about last year!!!!) sets us an enormous target, which we get with one ball to go on Friday evening!
I do believe I saw some pigs flying just now very near the volcanic dust!!!
Draw very likely then. Still, at least it will be a high scoring draw, but still one that would leave us further behind Lancs and Durham (tomorrow's forecast is fine and neither of those sides is likely to need more than one full day to complete their wins.)
It was always going to be a hard game to win once Yorkshire got a decent score. Weather won't help but I would be tempted to get 400 , throw the bat for 30 mins-quick 50 from Chas-declare ,and start taking wickets.
Simply, SP, because I assume one of our posters would have already said as much ... if there's been an announcement I'd have thought Mike, for one, would have heard it?
If we are starting and if the track is lively, I really think we should just get to 400 and then start bowling whilst conditions remain helpful.
Forecast for tomorrow is VERY good, so I would not think that the side that bowls tomorow will get much, if any, weather related help.
AG, it is definitely much brighter with broken cloud and no rain for a while. There are still some dark bits of cloud and I wouldn't be suprised at the odd shower, but it's alot brighter than 2 hours ago.
I went back to cricinfo just now wondering if play was near as it seems playable, and apparently we're about to start.
Well, I guess we can probably stop worrying about the "bat on," debate unless James does a superb strike-farming job.
Hussain blatantly tried extremely hard with the bat at Hove. He does look like he has at least a fair defensive technique. But this is a pretty good Yorkshire attack and I think the best we can probably hope for is that Gemaal accompanies James up until the 400 mark.
Yeah, I wonder if there is any correlation at all, Edinburgh, between the England number six decision having been taken and James making his best score of the summer?
Perhaps none at all, as it has sounded as though James has been in decent touch and we know he's been run out twice, but just a thought...
Well, clearly all depends how we bowl/catch really, Edinburgh!
If we end up with a lead of 80 and then reduce them to 125 for 4 (not a terrible score in and of itself) then they'd then be under quite a lot of pressure at, effectively, 45 for 4.
Bowlers have really got to hit their straps though. I didn't bother to look at the figures for the two stugglers, Hants and Worcs, but I looked at the bowling figures for most of the other counties and, Kirby apart, our bowling strike-rates are generally worse than those of bowlers playing for Counties that are towards the top end of the table.
Bat on! IF JH gets the chance to smash a few it will help our cause no end. We need to score quickly to move the match forward IMO, especially as we may lose further time to weather.
If we bowl them out for 200ish second dig then IMO that is a match changing bowling performance to back up a useful lead ;-)
The thing is the first innings of this match occupied, I think, about 85 overs. The second innings has gone past the 110 mark.
Unless conditions change, or have changed, radically then one would expect that the third innings might also last some considerable time.
And there are, presumably about 160 overs or so left in this match.
Personally, I still think I'd rather start bowling ASAPas I think I'd rather have to chase a few extra runs under the sun tomorrow than I would have to take 5 or 6 wickets tomorrow.
I think I'd rather have runs in the bank, as long as they are quick. I fear we'll need to bowl them out in 100 overs(ish) to win the game. Given our middle order inexperience, I'd rather chase less. Declaring now would save all of 10 minutes.
Of course we may not be given a choice of how long to bat. I guess we'll find out pretty soon.
I didn't say Marcus said that as a quote, that's simply my conclusion based on;
a) What he said
and
b) The fact it took 80+ overs to get them out first time around (You'll see in a minute how the two could be linked)
Marcus's quote was ;
"I think we were quite lucky to get them out for the total we did, because we did not bowl well at all."
So the reason I say that a sharp improvement would probably be required is because it took us 85 overs or so to get them out last time AND that was with the benefit of luck on our side (according to the boss)
Whilst there's a lull in postings, re the Fantasy stuff, does anyone know how long J Harris of Glam, will be out, as I've just replaced Vaas, who I thought would be playing for SL, having not played for Northants, then Harris gets injured! It's all very confusing.
Still Bairstow and Tresco have served me well this week.
Grockle - you just said on commentary that the movement seems to have gone away at the moment. We are now (ball use) wise into the same sort of period as we were in the first innings when not very much happened for an extended period. That period was from just before the 40th over until just after the 70th.
I am home early and listening to the commentary for the first time I was cold and holding the camera didn't help. Grockle mentioned about Steve Kirby going off the field, while I was at the ground I spotted what I thought was SK holding his back.
Very cold day, so hopefully it's just that the cold has sent his back into spasm and nothing serious or long-term.
If it's the kind of thing that takes ten days or so to settle down, that's no great drama as there's no CC cricket anyway and I don't really think he will be a key figure in T20.
Looks like today was a real team effort with wickets shared around.
Would rather be in our position than theirs.
That said, they still have a couple of tricks customers to come - Shahzad can hit out lustily and Sidebottom can be very, very stubborn. So still a fair bit of work to do in the morning, especially if we are a bowler down.
But a couple early will sort it out.Hussain, Willo and Tregs can get the last four, but we will need at least 200 on this wicket the way it is looking and probably more.
Looking from afar (in Liverpool today, just suffered the LCCC result on the news) it seems Lewis wasn't given a chance till later in the afternoon and once again took a wicket within a couple of overs.
Surely we've got to give him a chance earlier on when things aren't going right?
Tumbles - Yeah Gregory has yet to take many wickets in his first few games, but that's three openers he has now disposed of.
At Hove, he looked a man in search of a stock ball, to an extent - not surprising as he's not been bowling for long. But that yorker is devastating!! When he develops a good stock ball he will become a really good bowler, IMO.
No mention of Kirby injury on official site. Hopefully that might be a good sign, there?
Andy Hurry delighted with the 40 minute spell after tea in terms of bowling. He reckons Arul's two wickets have the game tilted in our favour.
Displeased, as he was at Hove, with the new ball bowling, though.
You have to wonder if Alf will be handed the new ball when he is back because there are only so many times that captain and coach can be brassed off with the bowling at the start of an innings before something gives?
And the Yorkshire site is saying their lot will need to bat "into the afternoon and then bowl like demons," for them to win the game, so one could infer from that that they do not believe they would have much chance at all of defending the sort of total of 210-230 or so that they would probably be left to defend if they didn't manage to bat 'into the afternoon.'
Well, for a start, the perception of him at the club, Scotsman, is that he is a batsman that bowls, from what I can tell.
Indeed, one cannot fault the club for that too much, because when I saw Lewis interviewed that also seemed to be his OWN perception!
He's only been bowling - at any level - for two years and so is learning the ropes, really, as a bowler in first-class cricket.
I think he has two general attributes as a bowler that are good .. he bowls wicket-to-wicket and he has good pace through the air. He has one specific attribute that is outstanding .. his yorker.
If it's that kind of target how aggressively will we go for it with the inexperience in the middle order and Jos not in form?
250 off 50 is the kind of target where you only get it if you are aggressive. I get the impression that Marcus has been trying to bat very responsibly and only accelerating later in recent innings.
Another good day against a tough team - same again tomorrow should see a victory, though if their last 4 wickets add a 100 I might have to listen from behind the sofa.
A superb fight back, it sounds like an excellent match.
Well done boys, let's hope we can winkle out Blue II tomorrow morning, it'll be game over if we can.
I don't know that Shahzad - when he gets in - knows how to shut it up. I think he's sure to go for it. Conversely, one would think the cussed Mr Sidebottom will be in "thall shall not pass," mode.
The interesting one will be how young master Bairstow plays it. He has a remarkable average in his career so far - and all of it in Div One.
He has had a poor conversion rate in his young career - masses of 50s but just one ton (actually a double.) That was until the first innings here. If he makes it two tons in this single game, one wonders if that will open the century making floodgates. And given that he's managed to average the best part of 50, without previously making many really big scores...
If I was them, I'd take it very carefully for an hour, maybe be happy with 30-1 in the first hour, then take what's on offer. It also wouldn't surprise me if one hit out (maybe Rashid) while JB concentrated on staying and hitting the loose ball.
If they set us 270 off 60, they might back themselves for the draw minimum and maybe hope SIdebottom and Rashid can bowl us out. The sixth wicket was the nightwatchman, so they've still got every chance of adding 100 (as our tail managed).
Friday is probably the most important day of our season . Win and we keep the second half of the CC alive,Big momentum into the 2020.Draw or Lose we can probably only be looking at a runners up spot at best, with extra pressure on winning a one day trophy. Momentum is a great thing. Please let it start now!!!
He's not quite good enough with the gloves yet from what I've read, but he's jolly close.
Not this season I wouldn't have thought, unless of course something happens to Prior.
From the mouth of Roy Kerslake on the equally good Radio SCCC commentary, the Yorkshire committee have confirmed that the visitors will NOT be setting us any kind of target. Unless as he said it is 600 off 20 overs.
Well BJ, some would say that Prior's keeping is not good enough either... including a number of Sussex fans at Hove. He was certainly poor against us - easily outperformed by Jos. And the Sussex fans tell me Prior is routinely outperformed by Andrew Hodd.
Before we all start to see Lewis as the new bowling sensation at Taunton because he bowled someone when we needed a wicket please don't.
His championship bowling is not yet on a par with his one day bowling. He was on late as a replacement for Kirby simply because Gemaal had already bowled from the River for a while.
The question of more relevance was why Trigger did not return.
Lewis is a wicket to wicket man with a bit of surprising pace but he was struggling for his line. The ball he got Root with was excellent. Full, straight and fast but he wasn't producing those bombs every ball by any means and he did not build on it afterwards though he certainly bent his back trying.
If anything Root was as surprised by the jaffa of a yorker as a number of others were. There is lots of promise there but he is not yet the best batting bowler we have at four day level.
Good for Alf to see what he can do though and he was one of the first to go to him afterwards.
We didn't see Kirbs holding his back, when he walked off we were assuming he had a slight leg niggle as he was slightly one sided and with a minor limp.
Arul bowled really well and deserved both his wickets. He had Ballance so unsure that he looked to leave a ball, then thought it was gong to turn in and was forced to simply pat it into the skipper's hands.
Gemaal had the same problem as Lewis from the River. He was getting loads of bounce...God help batsmen's ribs if he gets them straight at that length.
PT bowled very well in his first few overs - and he and the close catchers clearly thought that he had Bairstow caught behind a couple of overs after PT had removed Gale.
I agree with BJ that Bairstow is a really good prospect.
The Emperor batted beautifully. England's loss ...
I think most of us believe LG is talented, but we're just waiting to see what form his talent is going to take. Is he a frontline bowler? Is he a top 6 batsman? Is he both, i.e. a top-class all-rounder (preferably)?
So all the analysis here is just impatient curiosity, fRed.
Based on the evidence so far he looks like mainly a bowler, but it's probably still too early to tell.
I suppose we're waiting for him to get in properly and stack up his first big score, and then we'll know.
Well, one poster - Scotsman - asked a question about Gregory and his level of usage as a bowler. It's quite difficult for anyone to answer such a question without recourse to some "analysis," unless one simply resorts to saying "I'm not Marcus, so I could not say."
One presumes that that is not the sort of answer that the person that posed the question was looking for.
The question is what might Waller have done here instead of Gregory. And if not here then when?
Is Waller more likely than Gregory to take wickets than he is less likely to score runs?
I would argue yes. And we need those wickets. We are hugely reliant on the triumverate of Willoughby, Hussain and Kirby and we desperately need other options
No they are not. I thought beforehand that if I had to make a bet on the result here, I might well go "draw."
Expect them to fight extremely hard with the bat. Don't expect the pitch to do very much untoward. Suspect that, with the inexperience that we have, we might be quite quick to put up the shutters, should we have any mishaps early on (esp if we lose the boss) if involved in a frantic run-chase.
Would guess it might take until about an hour after lunch to get rid of them..... and that might well leave us 230-240 or so to get in sort of 50 overs or something like that.
Sounds like we've bowled very well this morning and so probably deserved that little bit of luck, however daft it may have been from the Yorkshire point of view.
Steve Harmision seems to have uninjured himself of something. Had been stuck on 0.4 overs overnight, and then suddenly has started bowling again .. and taken a wicket.
Ronniesabre who did the run out and who were they fielding for? Anyone know?
Ive been out most of the morning. Hopefully we can get the last one and pull this off!!!
I believe it was Jake Lintott, a direct hit from mid wicket, but dont know who is off the field.
Anyway, set off to go for it, and only shut up shop when it's impossible, or too easy for Yorks to win, I say. No need for hell-for-leather, but positive batting should do it.
I have said it before but how many catches does that man Trescothick take?..........hes brilliant in there and I would wager his tally this season wont be that much less than our Wicket keepers.
>>Not a recognised specialist batter in sight and their last 4 wickets still did the biz for them
I know what you're saying, Ronnie, but Rashid has a first-class average of 34 with 4 centuries, Bairstow has an average of 47 and 216 runs in this match alone, plus Shahzad and Sidebottom have racked up over 300 runs between them this season so far, so I don't think the struggle was too unexpected.
I think we did OK to get rid of the last 4 for 72 runs, all in all!
Very true SP, and to illustrate (and remember Patterson is actually their no.10 but came in as nightwatchman yesterday) the first-class averages are as follows:
Our last four still got more than theirs though. We added 84 I think in our first innings.
I've had the last commentary stint for this game for the last three years...let's hope it works again and we don't have Gemaal and Charl trying to last 5 overs in poor light about 6-ish to get the draw.
Can anyone explain why Warks had 12 batsman in first inninngs as well as barker , who didn't bat in the first inninngs but is now 70 not out???13 players?
the Irish guys who are playing against Pakistan this week (Porterfield and Rankin I think) started this game and were allowed substitutes later in the game. They started but ddn't finish essentially.
But what difference does that ultimately make ronnie?
As long as our two-innings aggregate is higher than their two innings aggregate, we win, don't we?

Oh sorry. I thought you were saying that the runs from our last four partnerships were less praiseworthy becaus a large portion of them came from James.
I posted something on here about Tres's disrespect of leg-spinners. It appears from his last over than England's foremost practitioner of the noble art is still suffering from the boss's liking for his type of bowling.
Can`t be too many matches in which two players have both taken their 500th first-class wicket.
Yorkshire`s Ryan Sidebottom did it in our first innings, and Steve Kirby, his former county colleague, did it in their second knock. His victim: Ryan Sidebottom.
Nailsea_Fizz Tres - 3rd in the all time list of runs in a match
Yep - and just another 6 would have given him the record number of runs ever scored in a first class match for Somerset, overtaking Jamie Cox's 345 against Hants in 1999 and Justin Langer's 342 against Surrey in 2006. Congrats to Marcus and the whole side for a brilliant result.
I was privileged to see the last few hours and Tres was simply in a different class (again!). Arul was very watchful but batted well and later tok some big boundaries.
Saw TykesRUs on the Hill and commiserated - he must be very p****ed off that the last three years we have hit big scores to beat the last dig.
An excellent game, a superb victory, the best team in the land....still.
Lots of questions answered today, I'd like to say that the tedious words have been well and truly stuffed down the squawking throats of the doombringers, but I'm in a good mood, so I won't.
Well done boys, now let's catch those upstarts and win this CC thing, we all know it's our property this year.
Brilliant news when I got home this evening. Missed most of the run chase as was in the car on the way home from work. I thought I was doing well, saving my nerves in the run-chase - turned out it was a stroll.
Well played Banger, or Sir Banger of Keynsham as he will soon be. Excellent game for Arul, Hildy and the bowlers for taking 20 wickets.
Should be safe from relegation now - I even think we have a chance of finishing in the top half
Don't be too sure about that, Shep.
I'd like Charl to sort his batting out first and then see these pesky youngsters knock a few double centuries off before we get too carried away.
Let's be serious for a minute, we were lucky last season, we all know that, we really are a desperate, average side, masquerading as wannabee winners.
It's only a matter of time before we're found out.
**dons jesters hat to appear jolly and jovial**
As private Fraser would say.......

Ronniesabre
Then someone posts something like our tails better than theres nonsense so was just recating to that really
Your interpretation Ronnie - weren't you one of the posters moaning about this kind of stuff only 3 days ago.
You really need to go back and read the post. It simply states that our last four scored more than their last four. It says nothing else about who was better. That bit of 'nonsense' was entirely yours I'm afraid old bean.
:-)

A privilege to watch both of Trescos knocks in this match. When he's in this form he's head and shoulders above all other batsmen in the country. England's loss is most certainly Somerset's gain. Has it ever happened before that Somerset have had two double century opening stands in a match.
The only good thing about the afflication Marcus suffers from is that we get the opportunity to watch this gent bat on a regular basis without paying 90 odd notes a day for the honour.
Today MT would have been captaining England and putting someone else out of an international contract if things were different. Instead we get to see a true international great take apart a decent bowling attack as if they were second string bowlers.
We will not see his like many times in a lifetime of watching cricket and we are very honoured to be the county where he plies his trade.
Today was one of those special days you'll tell people about for years and there are more to come...ain't we lucky?
A quick post before I sort my photos out for posting.
An excellent result for Somerset I must give praise to Marcus & Arul for getting us across the line, and all the rest of the team.
This remark is for the two Grockle’s (one poster and one reader) who sat with me today, this is especially for the one who fills in his scorecard. When O Hannon-Dalby’s wicket fell the announcer and the scoreboard said Marcus Trescothick caught him at slip, I thought at the time James Hildreth had caught him at first slip, my photos made it look like the ball was going to James but I couldn’t be positive.
It now looks like we were correct at the time the scorecard on cricinfo shows it was James who caught him at slip.
Rambling Sid
Yes the same question I asked - I wonder how often it has ever happened in first class cricket - never mind just Somerset. Most times I would guess the opening pair wouldn't have the opportunity to repeat the double hundred partnership a second time in same match due to time etc.
It was a privelige to watched this game. The likely result ebbed and flowed as the game progressed with even the weather playing it's part in the likely outcome. After the disappointment of Hove last week head could easily of dropped but no such thing occurred. This was a fine all round team effort with even the sub fielder chipping in with a run out.
In the end it looks on paper as if we won at a canter but the end result was in doubt until Arul and Tres performed brilliantly this afternoon.
It was worth the price of membership just to watch this game.
Now what day does our next home game start?
21st July I'm told.
You must be joking!!!
Has it ever happened before that Somerset have had two double century opening stands in a match.
I am not really a 'Stato', Sid, but according to a book I have relating to Somerset cricket records, and which was published in 1995, it had not occurred up until then.
This, in terms of being nearer to 200, was the closest that it got:-
Well, before the season started I stupidly thought we would have 8 games before T20 - I counted wrongly. My prediction was 4 wins, 1 draw and 3 defeats. We actually have produced 3 wins, 3 defeats and 1 draw. So not far from where I thought we'd be, albeit played one fewer game.
As Grockle says today was a special day. A real day to remember.I have been lucky to have been a spectator at the last 3 Yorkshire games and each one has been special.
Also, a mention to the ground staff for producing a great pitch which gave assistance to both batters and bowlers and made for an exciting game. In fact very similar to the pitch for the game against Worcs. If the rest of the pitches are the same this season then we are in for an exciting summer.
BJ - totally agree with you about the Som-Yorks series.
Some may have forgetten the last home game prior to these wins when ZDB played a heroic innings as we came up just short, batting last. That, too, was a great game.
There have also been some good games at Headingley and North Marine Road over the past decade or so.
I popped in for a couple of hours just after lunch, didn't want to leave but my 4 year old starts running riot if were there too long. Anyway I noticed this player(Jake Lintott) giving the bowlers plenty of encouragement. I missed the run out as was on way down to the ground fair play to the lad.
I have a painting 22"x15" of the Yorksire game of 2002,taken at the river end by Jocelyn Goldswothy. It was presented to me by my former work colleagues after I had to give up work.
It has pride of place on the wall in front of my desk.
We won that game by 7 wickets with Marcus scoring a second ball duck in the first innings and 134 in the second.I.D.B.scored 114 in our first innings and in Yorks first innings A.R.Caddick 23.3/5/72/5 and in the second innings 26.4/6/73/3.I wonder what he's doing now.
Quite right, BJ - I'd wager that Som v Yorks games have been much, much better cricket matches than Lancs v Yorks in recent years. I expect the media will cotton on to that in about 30 years time.
There are some things that will be sorted out by the T20 tournament but we will go into it with considerable confidence. let's hope we come out the other end stronger and ready for a big big fight with Lancs and others.
Psychologically this victory couldn't have been better because we have still not played our 'on paper' strongest side in this competition.
This must be devastating for Yorkshire, they weren't 10 wickets behind us in this game but they may struggle to stay in this division even though they have some really promising players.
Rashid was woeful. Root outbowled him from ball 1.

...all the digs from the do gooders suitably ignored too!!
Ive no time for this glass full/empty nonsense.
Not sure which is the statement you want to stick by Ron but maybe if you stop referring to the nonsense you have no time for then the nonsense will stop and you won't have to have no time for it?
Interesting to research the cricketing background of Jake Lintott, the sub whose stunning pick up and direct-hit to remove Shahzad was such a vital part of the morning play. He seems to have arrived somewhat beneath the radar among the current crop of bright young Somerset prospects, but has a pedigree up there with the best of them.
Taunton-born and only just 18, he has already hit 78 from 65 balls batting at No.10 for the Seconds against a strong Surrey Second XI this season.
But it is his record at Queen`s College Taunton that is so impressive. Last summer he was only the second Queen`s player ever to pass 1,000 runs (1,045 at 69.66) in a season, and was the fifth highest scorer in schoolboy cricket in the country.
Add in 40 wickets at 12.82 from his left-arm spin (the fourth highest in the country), plus a hattrick against the MCC, and he had some summer.
Along with George Dockrell and Jack Leach, also from Taunton and currently at Cardiff University, we suddenly seem to have left-arm spinners under the age of 20 here, there and everywhere. And in Jake, we have one who can bat at the top of the order into the bargain.
ronnies Hang on guys this is only one game!! Bit of an over reaction eh?
Seriously, great win and all the digs from the do gooders suitably ignored too!!
Happy days.
Yeah, you're right, maybe we should close the curtains, kick the cat and stick pins in little dolls of people enjoying themselves.
It's only one game you daft people, stop celebrating...what's wrong with you.....dashed nonsense celebrating a victory.
Now, where's the councils phone number....it's nearly one o clock, there must be something to complain about.
Ethel.....bring me that telephone.....youngsters these days.....
Can we try and keep him there by involving him properly in T20?
How about a 'flexible 3,' arrangement?
Marcus and Pete or Craig open. If wkt falls in powerplay, then whichever of Craig/Pete did not open comes out. If powerplay is over when first wkt falls send Arul out?
I agree about Arul, AG, but if you are being realistic he is probably one of this week`s cc team who may not even make the T20 side against Hampshire next Wednesday.
You are certainly going to have to find room for Craig K., Alfonso and Murali, possibly another spinner (George if he is ready or Max), or another aggressive batter in Craig Meschede.
Willow obviously won`t play and they would be wise to rest Steve if he was an ankle niggle. You surely have to keep Lewis Gregory in, but if you need to find two extra places it could rest between Alex Barrow, Gemaal Hussain and Arul dropping out.
That was the first ever fixture between us, but we gained revenge by way of a 6 wicket victory later in the season at Bradford Park Avenue.
Somerset is way, way behind Yorkshire in the number of victories achieved, but thankfully results have swung dramatically in our favour over the last few years.
Long may that continue, and what an eventful match that must have been to watch at Taunton over the past four days.
Does anybody know the whereabouts of LoL? I have a predilection for his contributions, and have understandably missed them recently.
Think it would be great to squeeze Arul into the 2020 team, although there's probably about 13 people I'd want playing.
He offers extra spin if needed, brilliant fielding, is a proper batsmen, and yet last year also hit two onto the roof in one of the later games coming in in the last couple of overs.
cjm - I wouldn't be looking at Hussain for T20, personally.
And I doubt management would be looking at Alex Barrow playing many T20 games.
I'd think Arul might be in a scrap with Craig M for a place. But I just don't think it's a great idea to either not pick Arul or have him in a position where he comes in only for a 5 ball slog-fest. After all, we've just put back to back 200 run opening stands and I would think that should count as a massive plus point on which we should be seeking to build. I think there is some second team cricket during the T20 period this time, but I'm not sure it's of a sufficient standard to keep Arul sharp ... might be too easy for him.
I'd think management's first-choice side might be something like;
Marcus
Craig
Pete
Compton
Hildreth
Buttler
Meschede/Arul
Gregory
Alf
Kartik
Dockrell/Waller
Obviously, Pollard will get a place for the 2nd half. I'd think the place he will take would either be Meschede/Arul place or Compton's.
Although if you go with Arul in the side, you might decide that you don't need a second specialist spinner, in which case Pollard might take the Dockrell/Waller spot.
Marcus may be getting all the plaudits but a huge amount of credit for this victory must go to our frontline seam triumverate who really stuck at their task.
Bowling at Taunton is not easy and Willoughby, Kirby and Hussein got through a load of work as they have done all season, without the support of a frontline spinner.
They've stayed fit and got us to a situation where we're still in contention with Kartik and Thomas now back in the frame. Had any of them got injured or really lost form it would have been tricky.
I know Hussain has been criticised but he has taken wickets in conditions that are tougher than Bristol in division two.
Kartik will surely come in for Gregory in the CC who has potential, but is contributing little at the moment.
As regards Thomas, well I think he needs to show himself in the one dayers as it would be a bit harsh to drop one of our three main seamers as things stand.
I'm not so sure about that. Only Kirby has really had a good strike-rate this season. The rest have not been particulary consistent in terms of their penetration thus far.
I think Alf will come straight back in. Assuming Kirby is fit for Edgbaston then I'd think Alf would replace Hussain.
In general, for the second half of the season, we might possibly find that the four main seamers rotate into three first team places but at the moment then, if fit, the one that would not be rotated out would be Kirby. Apart from anything else, anytime I see a comment from Brian Rose this season, it almost always includes 'Kirby bowled well.'
As BristolRob said, it was a privilege to spend four days at Taunton – actually 3 ¾, because I had to leave before the end; but who's counting?
And as FE said, it was a magnificent victory – all the more commendable, in my view because Yorkshire, who are a good side, played well and fought hard. Somerset's opening partnerships were the result of peerless batting by Trescothick and excellent support from Suppiah, rather than – with the possible exception of Rashid, who disappointed – poor bowling by Yorkshire (something which should be borne in mind next time two batsmen put together a large partnership against our bowlers).
Trescothick not only scored quickly, but avoided unnecessary risks to ensure that he put his side into a winning position in the first innings and took his side to victory in the second. He really is a giant among men.
Hildreth also batted very well. The runs he put on with the lower order – and the support they gave him – were crucial.
All the bowlers had good spells. Hussain looked more threatening than he had done at Hove.
Football managers talk about playing for ninety minutes. I am sure that Andy Hurry makes the same point; and this was illustrated for me by three incidents yesterday. Bairstow edged the third ball of the day low to Buttler's right: a 'keeper who wasn't alert could well have dropped it, but Buttler (who kept well throughout) caught it comfortably. At the very end of the morning session, with minds inevitably turning to the afternoon session, Kirby produced an irresistible yorker which burst through Sidebottom's defence. The third moment - as cjm has already described – came shortly after Jake Lintott came on to field. The ball was pushed towards his right-hand and nine times out of ten, the batsmen would have got home for a single. Lintott must have been in this position on countless occasions during fielding drills; but this was for real. His response? He picked the ball up on his wrong side and in one flowing movement threw down the stumps with his left-hand, with Shahzad inches short of his ground – a moment which arguably changed the course of a match which was beginning to drift towards a draw.
Congratulations to the groundstaff for producing a wicket which rewarded both good batting and good bowling.
Finally, my enjoyment of the match was enhanced by the company around me, including Grockles' contributors and readers, parents of two of the players, and a gentleman who reminisced to me about growing up watching Hobbs and Sandham open the batting for Surrey and another who told me that he remembered seeing Arthur Wellard play in 1936 (which makes him 75 years a Somerset supporter).
"Somerset's opening partnerships were the result of peerless batting by Trescothick and excellent support from Suppiah, rather than – with the possible exception of Rashid, who disappointed – poor bowling by Yorkshire (something which should be borne in mind next time two batsmen put together a large partnership against our bowlers). "
I'm sure some of the opposing openers have played well at times.
I think it's fairly clear, though, that Andy Hurry, at least, has been of the opinion that our bowling at the start of innings this season is one of the areas at which we need to get better.
Arul is you second spinner. He is the man bowling in form. If you want to add another specialist then rest Compton and he should be rested when Pollard gets here.
He's become a better CB40 player - he isn't a T20 player yet.
No offence Ronnie, but I don't think you have the slightest clue what you're talking about....I'd stick to your "this is nonsense" posts if I were you, at least that way you can join in with the grown ups.

ronnies Hey BJ you can give it out but can't take matey.

Aye, that is true, but I was referring to the two games played in the 1901 season, when we nearly did the double over the all conquering Yorkshire team.
The game played at Taunton, Braund's game, sounds like a gem, not unlike the last few games we've played against the White Rose County.
Except that they won.
But we got them back later that season when some rather well known batsmen scored heavily.
I think LoL still has the scorecard for that one, I think he had it signed by players from both sides.
Just out of interest Ronnie, and I won't ask again because I'm sure none of us want to see this thread ruined by bickering, can you please point out just what you "dished out"?
I've just re-read it all and I have to admit, I can't see it.
Or are we all to assume that you are just an "ironic sort of guy" and we're all a bit too dense for your anarchic sense of humour?
There seems to be a few posts of yours, one which was picked up by at least one other person, where you seem to be a little muddled.
Records continue to emerge from this remarkable match - 679 is the highest aggregate number of runs Yorkshire have totalled in their 148-year history in a match they have lost by ten wickets.
For those of you who spent some time debating the catching of Hanon-Dalby I thought 'd stick this on from one of the commentators on at the time;
Have just been reading the comments on Grockles. Particularly interested that there was debate about who caught Hannon-Dalby. If your correspondents had been listening to the SCCC ball-by-ball commentary, they would have known right away that it was James!! They would also have been informed that we needed 228 to win, and that the scoreboard and PA got it wrong by saying 229!! They did correct it just before the innings started, although we had of course already told our listeners that the board was wrong!! What else do you expect with a recently retired accountant in the box?
There's BBC Leeds and then there's the home grown stuff :p)
Mr and Mrs Kartik on their way from Heathrow to the Mighty T. Our King of Spin is on UK soil again and will soon be kissing the Somerset soil once more.
He says he will be trying his 'bestest as always'. Can't ask more than that.

Well, old boy, I looked at an old reference book to find that one - 'The Wisden Book of Cricket Records' which was compiled by the late Bill Frindall and published in 1980.
It lists every 'First - Wicket Hundred Partnership in both innings' in First Class cricket - even some, where there was a change of partner in the second innings.
There were only three where the first innings partnership had exceeded 200, and only the one that I quoted where the partnership had been in excess of 200 in both innings.
Yes, that match was drawn, but unless the feat has been done again since 1980, then it is the only other one apart from the Trescothick / Suppiah one of last week.

old boy!
"Perhaps I should have added to make the question as follows: - same opening pair making 200+ partnership in each innings and their team wins the match.
"I would doubt whether there have been many, if any, meeting the criteria of my question."
I don't know whether it has been achieved again since 1980, old boy, but in answer to your question, it has never happened before on a Friday afternoon in England in May.
It's amazing to think that in the 31 years that have passed since 1980 (when the above - mentioned reference book was published) there have been a further four instances, as opposed to just one in the 85 or so years of First Class cricket prior to 1949.
