380 for 8 at the end of 107 overs. 43 runs ahead. 8 scores of 20 or more and only 3 over 50 with none reaching 3 figures.
Cox and Wood did put on 102 for the first wicket and that didn't happen too often in the spring of 2001. Matt Wood's first score of 54 was promising and Cox weighed in with 65 - but he usually turns these starts into lots of runs. Although Burns, Parsons, Blackwell, Turner and Dutch all scored, none of them passed 40 and it was left to Peter Bowler to accumulate. His 94 got us to a reasonable score but we must expect to be bowling at them by lunchtime tomorrow and it is up to the attack to put this game beyond Sussex by removing Goodwin before he puts on a repeat performance. We have got to beat these new boys to stay with the big Division One contenders. Surrey wasted this side in the second innings and we need to do the same. A draw is safe an possibly on the cards but it isn't enough for Championship aspirations I am afraid.
