Surrey won the toss and decided to bat. Ward and Newman then both hit centuries in a massive stand off 227 for the first wicket. Ward hit is fourth championship century in a row. Phil DeFeitas finally dismissed him for 118. Scott Newman making only his third championship start hit a brilliant 183. This beat his 99, which he made on his debut against Hampshire. Jon Batty then came in and scored 74. This score finished off a brilliant season for Batty, which has included two centuries.
