Ward is in his second spell at Surrey. He was released in 1996 but he was re-seined in 1998. He was then given his chance in the first team and he grabbed the opportunity. In 2000 he was given he test debut against Australia at Lords. He made a useful contribution of 39. This was to prove his highest score as the Australians discovered a floor in his technique. He played in five test matches when he was dropped for a poor run of form. After the test series he was criticized a lot because of his technique. When I interviewed him he said,
‘The fact was I was not playing very well and when people do not play very well their technique lets them down.’

Last season Ian Ward had a great season for Surrey. He hit seven hundreds in a total of 1,759 runs. This made him the top run scorer of the year. He also took his first ever wickets for Surrey. In the championship he took three wickets and in one-day cricket he took two wickets. He also made his highest ever score of 168 not out against Kent at Canterbury. He also passed 5, 000 career runs.
