Surrey started the day on 61 for 2 with Ward and Thorpe at the crease.
They had put on 76 when Thorpe was caught by Jimmy Anderson off Any Flintoff trying to pull. Ali Brown was then run out for naught as he attempted a quick single. Then after lunch Adam Holliokae was caught by Mark Chilton off young fast bowler Kyle Hogg. With the score at 150 for 5 Surrey were struggling and Lancashire looked favorites or a victory. But then Ward and Clarke both hit centuries as they put on a record 144 for the sixth wicket. Ward hit three sixes in his innings and even lost the ball on one occasion! Ward was finally dismissed when he hit the ball straight to Ian Sutcliffe for 158. Clake continued to hit and he reached his century off 139 balls. This was Clark’s third championship hundred for Surrey.
