Surrey in quarters

Surrey moved into the quarter finale of the C and G trophy by beating Somerset by six runs at Taunton today. Graham Thopre hit 102 not out as Surrey scored 281 for 6 of their 50 overs. Somerset won the toss and decided to bowl. They soon had Surrey in trouble at 86 for 3. Rikki Clarke and Graham Thopre took the score 106 when Clarke was caught behind of Parsons. Adam Hollioake then hit 33 but when he was out Surrey were 169 for 5. Richard Johnson then removed Azhar Mahmood first ball. Graham Thorpe and new batsmen Jon Batty then put on 122 for the seventh wicket. Batty hit 55 off just 46 balls. But the star of the Surrey innings was Graham Thopre. Thorpe hit 102 off just 103 balls with 13 fours. This innings from Thorpe showed the England selectors what a class act he is.

Somerset needed a good start to their innings but they soon found themselves in trouble at 51 for 3. Somerset captain Michel Burn and Kieth
Parsons then put on 97 before Burns was caught behind off Rikki Clarke for 47. Parsons and new partner Ian Blackwell then took the score to 231 for 5. Somerset looked certain for suburb victory. But then Blackwell was then caught by Mark Butcher off Saqlain Muhtaq for 39. Parsons departed shortly after for 83 when he was caught by Thopre of Mushtaq. Surrey captain Adam Hollioake then took 3 wickets to leave Somerset 262 for 9. Somerset had thrown the match away and could only reach 275 for 9 of their 50 overs. Surrey had won by 6 runs.
