Surrey had Kent captain David Fulton to thank after he made a surprise declaration on day three when Kent were 352 for 5. Surrey went on to win the match by 181 runs with Saqlain Mushtaq claming four wickets as Kent were dismissed for 114.
Surrey started the game without skipper Adam Hollioake so Mark Butcher captained the side. Surrey then made a massive score of 401 with Butcher making 144 and Graham Thopre scoring 68. For Kent young spinner Robert Ferley took four wickets. Surrey then reduced Kent to 40 for 2 with Saqlain Mushtaq taking the wicket of former Surrey batsmen Michael Carberry for 16 and then Martin Bicknell trapped David Fulton leg before wicket for 14. Ed smith then made a superb century and Matt Walker scored 82. Andy Symonds also chipped in with 53. Then with the score on 352 for 5 Kent captain David Fulton made a shocking declaration.
Mark Butcher then came out and smashed a suburb 90 off just 74 balls with 9 fours and 4 sixes. He was finally dismissed by former Surrey player Michael Carberry when he went for one big hit to many and he was caught by Ed Smith. Graham Thorpe then made a useful 46 off just 67 balls. Ali Brown then came out and played in his usual fashion. He hit 64 off 74 balls with 9 fours and 3 sixes. Alec Stewart also chipped in with 25. Butcher then made a surprise declaration with Surrey on 251 for 3. Kent needed just 301 to win.
Surrey then reduced Kent to 21 for 2 with James Ormond claming two wickets. Firstly he bowled Fulton for 11 and then he had Smith caught by Butcher for naught. Things did not improve for Kent. Saqlain Mushtag clamed four wickets as the Kent batting collapsed. When Tredweell fell LBW to Salisbury for 17 Surrey had won by 115 runs. What a victory for the Lions. Surrey had spun Kent out for just 114. Saqlain Mushtaq claimed 4 wickets in just 14 overs and Salisbury took 3 wickets in just 5.4 overs.
