Jon Batty hit and unbeaten 152 as Surrey made 330 for 9 against Lancashire at Old Trafford. Graham Thopre and Azhar Mahmood both hit half centuries as Surrey recovered from 148 for 5 to reach 330 by the close. Surrey wen the toss and decided to bat but soon in to the morning session Ian Ward was dismissed for 10 when he was caught behind by Hegg off Martin. Batty and Thorpe then put on 104 for the second wicket. Thopre reminded the England selectors of his quality with 57. But when he was out Surrey lost Clarke, Brown and Hollioakre all in quick secession. Surrey were now in trouble at 148 for 5. Batty and Mahmood then out on 113 help Surrey recover. Mahmood had hit 63 when he was caught behind off Wood. Surrey then lost Ian Salisbury, Saqlain Mushtaq and James Ormond cheaply before the close of play. However John Batty was not to be defeated and he scored his third century if the season. When stumps were called Batty had reached his 150 and he now looks set to carry his bat thought the innings.
