Surrey warmed up for the new season with a draw against Oxford University. Scott Newman made the first centuary of the new season, while James Benning hit his maiden first class century. Mark Ramprakash also made a hundred as Surrey made 452 for 5 declared in their first innings. Oxford replied with 267. Ian Salisbury captured three wickets while Tudor and Bicknell each took two. Surrey then made 164 for 5 declared, with Nadeem Shahid boosting his chances of a first team place with an unbeaten 44.

However Surrey were able to break down Oxford and the game was called a draw. Oxford managed to reach 154 for 8 with McMahon, Linley and Suman all surviving to save the game for Oxford and leave the lions frustrated. Salisbury again took two wickets and Ormond also chipped in with three.
