Surrey scored 193 all out with Ali Brown scoring 49 and at the close Sussex were 139 for 7 with Ed Giddins taking 3 wickets.

Sussex won the toss and decided to bowl. Ian Ward and Jon Batty had put on 29 for the first wicket when Batty was run out for 16. Ward and Ramprakash then put on 31 when Ward fell LBW to Billy Taylor form 28. This brought Nadeem Shahid to the crease for Surrey. He and Ramprakash put on 34 when Ramprakash fell LBW to Kirtley for 32. Kirtley then took two more wickets including Shahid for 28 and Ali Brown for 49. Surrey were all out for 193 having been 111 for 3.

The Sussex reply did not start well. First Richard Montgomierer was caught by Shahid off the bowling off Giddins for 1. Then Goodwin fell for 3 when Tudor bowled him. Sussex were 4 for 2. Then Tony Cottey and Chris Adams put on 54 when Cottey was run out for 35. Chris Adams had reached 21 when he was caught by Musthag Ahmed (who was making his Surrey debut) off the bowling off Giddins. Sussex were in trouble at 70 for 4. Ambrose and Martin Jenkins pushed the score on to 112 for 4 but when Ambrose was caught by Ramprakash off Tudor Sussex were 112 for 5. Two more wickets fell on this score but a partnership of 27 Innes (6) and Davis (18) left Sussex 139 for 7 at stumps.
