Sri Lanka 381 & 126 England 344 & 164/4 England Won by 6 Wickets

England beat Sri Lanka by six wickets to win the series 2 – 0 despite having a first innings deficit.

 

England’s first innings ended on 344 all out as captain Joe Root was magnificent yet again in scoring 186.

 

England then spun Sri Lanka out for 126 with all ten wickets going to spin after all went to seam in the first innings with Jimmy Anderson bowling unbelievable to claim 6 wickets.

 

Bess and Leach took 4 apiece in the second innings with Root claiming the other 2 without conceding a run.

 

England reached 164 for the loss of only 4 wickets as Sibley and Buttler saw England home. Sibley ending on 56 not out and Buttler 44 not out to go with his first innings 55.

 

England will now travel to India and without Jonny Bairstow who was impressive again in this match despite only posting scores of 28 and 29.

 

Buttler will only play the first test in India before he is also rested so that means Ben Foakes will be given the opportunity with the gloves.

 

Sam Curran will also be rested with his place likely to go to Stokes who will strengthen the batting and be the fifth bowler.

 

Anderson, Broad and Archer are likely to be rotated for the other two spots but we could also see up to two of them rested in any one game with possible appearances for the likes of Stone.

 

Crawley had an awful series opening. He will now return to the number three spot as Burns comes in to open and Bairstow goes home for a rest.

 

Lawrence is likely to drop to six as Stokes comes in at five, meaning Buttler then Foakes will be at seven.

 

I feel both Bess and Leach will play at least the first two tests after their performances in Sri Lanka so Moeen Ali may only get to play if there is a case for three spinners on any of the pitches or if one of them has two bad tests on the bounce.
