Sussex gained the upper hand of day two in the first round of county championship matches of the new season. Resuming on 171 for 4, Sussex reached 390 all out with Michael Yardy making a century. After a first day in which only 49 overs were possible because of rain, Sussex resumed on 171 for 4. Yardy and Prior had added 29 to the overnight score when, Prior became the first victim of the day as he was caught by Salisbury with Ormond the bowler. However, Yardy was not to be denied a century and reached 111 before being trapped leg before wicket to Clarke, who was the pick of the Surrey bowlers as he calmed four scalps. Yardy received good support from Martin Jenkins who scored a useful 40. However rain during the afternoon session meant play had to be halted. Surrey had a bad start to their innings by loosing England A star Scoot Newman in the final over of the day. However due to heavy rain on both day one and two, this game looks to be heading for a draw, as more rain is forecasted.
