Surrey made a good start as Tim Murtagh continued his impressive one-day form with two early wickets to leave Gloucestershire 34 for 2. Phil Weston and skipper Chris Taylor took the score to 83, when Weston fell to Clarke for 35. Taylor and Gidman then added a crucial partnership of 73. Taylor scored a vital 74 from 87 balls, which helped his team reach an impressive score of 230 for 7. Gidman also played his part as he struck 58 not out. For Surrey Tim Murtagh claimed impressive figures of 3 for 36 from 10 overs, while Rikki Clarke captured two wickets, including a stunning catch to dismiss Adshead of the bowling of Nayan Doshi.

Surrey lost opener Scott Newman early on for 20, as he fell to a stunning catch at first slip by Craig Spearmen off the bowling to newly called up England bowler John Lewis. Batty and Ramprakash then added 51 for the second wicket. Graham Thorpe continued his poor from with just 13 as he was caught by Lewis, after top edging a pull short. Brown fell shortly after and the lions were in trouble at 110 for 4. Ramprakash and Clarke then added a crucial stand of 82 to put the lions in a strong position. Ramparakash fell for 85 when he became the victim to the second run out of the innings. Surrey were 192 for 5 and a close finish was on the cards. Fans were not left disappointed as Surrey need 17 runs from the last two overs. However Martin Bicknell eased the task with a six of Lewis on the first ball of the 49th over. Needing 8 of the last over Rikki Clarke hit two fours as Surrey won with 3 balls to spare. Later Clarke was voted man of the match after scoring 62 not out, taking two wickets and pulling of a superb catch.
