After a game heavily dominated by the bat, Surrey and Kent drew their match at Tunbridge Wells. Rikki Clarke, Robert Key (2) Martin Van Jaarsveld, Scott Newman and Richard Clinton all hit centuries as both team pilled on the runs.

Day one

Kent won the toss and decided to bat. Openers David Fulton and Robert Key put on a huge stand of 112 for the first wicket. Fulton reached 45, when he became Bicknell’s first victim as he was trapped leg before wicket. Van Jaarsveld lasted only one ball as again he was trapped leg before wicket to Bicknell. He took two more wickets in quick succession to leave Kent 118 for 4. Kemp was next to go as he was removed by Benning for 3. Hall and Key then added 100. Key was finally dismissed for an impressive 112 by Benning. Nayan Doshi claimed three out of the remaining four wickets as Kent were bowled out for 262. At the close of play Surrey had reached 22 for 0.

Day two

Surrey had a good start with Newman and Clinton putting on 57 for the first wicket. Newman, Ramprakash and Clinton then fell in quick succession to leave Surrey 67 for 3. Clarke and Batty added 99 for the fourth wicket, with Batty falling to Patel for 34. Clarke then shared in another big stand of 107, this time with Brown, who made 56. Meanwhile Clarke managed to reach his first century of the season. However when he fell for 124 he became Patel’s 5 victim. Patel picked up one more wicket to finish with 6 for 124, with Surrey making 324. At the close of play Surrey were 37 for 1, with Fulton the man out.

Day three

Night’s watchman Saggers made a useful 19 as he frustrated the Surrey bowlers. Worse was to follow as Key and Jaarsveld added a massive stand of 323 for the third wicket. Jaarsveld made 168 while England hopeful Key completed his second century of the match with 189. He was finally dismissed by Nayan Doshi, with John Batty claiming a stumping. Kent declared on 467 for 4, with Kemp and Walker making useful contributions. At the close Surrey were 11 for 0.
