Surrey defeated in thriller

Hampshire beat Surrey by 2 wickets as they scored the highest ever run chase in the competition to win a thrilling match at the oval. Surrey made a massive score of 258 for 6, with John Batty making 158 not out.

Surrey openers James Benning and John Batty got the innings off to a flyer and put on a massive stand of 142 for the first wicket. Benning was first to go when he was stumped by Pothas off Udal for 78 from 67 balls. Ali Brown became the second man to fall when he was caught by Latouf with Tremlett the bowler. Recently dropped England batsman Graham Thorpe then came to the crease to join Batty. Together they added 116. Thorpe fell for 60 when he bowled by Udal. This innings from Thorpe proved that he is still a class act. Clarke and Batty then added 47, with Clarke making a useful 17. Mahmood and Murtgah both fell cheaply as Surrey searched for quick runs. The innings belonged to John Batty as hen hit a massive 158 not out from just 149 balls, his maiden first class century for the lions. His innings helped Surrey reach 358 for 6 from their 50 overs.

Hampshire started badly as Mahmood had Lamb caught behind for a duck. Pothas was next to go for 27 as he was caught by Akram with Murtagh taking the wicket. Crawley and Watson then added 78. With the score on 119 Crawley was caught by Thorpe with Akram the bowler for 45. McMillan joined Watson at the crease and together they added 81. However when on 42. McMillian was run out. Ervine was next to go as he was caught by Doshi off Benning. Latouf provided useful help for Watson as he scored 25. When he was caught behind by Batty with Akram the bowler the Hawks were 270 for 6. Mascarenhas then fell cheaply for 9 as he was run. This left Udal and Watson to guided the Hawks to victory as they added 63. Watson was finally dismissed for 135 from just 105 balls when he was bowled by James Ormond. Udal hit 34 not out from 32 balls as Hampshire won by two wickets with 3.5 overs remaining.
